This video has sooo much in it. Lots of secret scenes from projects I've been working on for months. The video turned into a bit of a documentary style shoot, and I am really proud of the result. I tried my best to share my philosophy behind which gear is necessary and when to leave some of it at home. Let me know what you think!

As somebody who lives in constant fear of my camera gear being gate checked, the core unit being removable and placed into a smaller lightweight sack is absolutely incredible. I carry a tiny packable backpack inside of my larger (than what's technically allowed as a carry on) camera backpack for just that reason. I travel with an FX6 in my carryon and check a large Nanuk roller with a full size RED in it. I think the combination of the carry on Shimoda roller and the smaller Shimoda backpack as a personal item might actually let me get away with not having to check the RED anymore. I've had luggage end up on the wrong flight too many times, and anything to get away from that possibility would be a god send.

Exactly, call it purse, murse, manbag or fanny pack, it's a must. I have one for my Sony RX100 V7 and the other for quick access to my DJI Air 2 with the GoPro selfie in hand when I'm backpacking and never having to unsaddle when out in nature.

Outstanding - Thanks Levi. Very informative and helpful... not to mention incredible b-roll. Thank you for passing along the insights and what works best from your own various testing/adventures. It’s great to have answers to so many questions in great detail, from a trusted source such as yourself and that has used the gear for so long. Most gear videos show the same features everyone can read on the website. No one ever talks about the details or configurations common to all shooters... air travel, run & gun situations, etc. and what works or not works respectively. Thanks

Hi Levi, Hands down a comprehensive video with real world use! Well done. You, Chase, and Jevon are credible sources and only reason I was able to stumble on to the new Action X series and get to exchange with Ian. Chase has you beat on his 1hr reviews but very entertaining. Otherwise you have him beat on real world uses. The 3 of you should do a collab if you haven’t already thought about it. As a prosumer and living and working in Vietnam, it’s cool to see all the major bag manufacturers making packs here. I own PD 45l, Atlas (made in Philippines), and soon to be Action X series. Each has it’s strength, attention to details, and use cases. Nothing to complain abt any of them. I was torn between getting a X50 + carry on combo or X70 + X30 + carry on, but after your video, it looks I’m getting the later package. I didn’t know that you can add the PD capture clip to the X70 thick straps (check out Cotton Carrier new belt system) as well as the medium DSLR can fit in the X30 so thanks for that. I like both of those setups. This has been a much anticipated video that shows the entire range in real world uses. Ian’s last 2 videos on the X30 + carry on and X70 was also very helpful to visualize what I will need and use. If you and/or Ian are ever in Vietnam, let me know. I have a director friend who assisted the US directors’ team that shot Kong in the caves of Vietnam. I plan on using the Shimoda Action X packs and trek through the same caves and put them through their paces. Who knows, we may even be able to find our secret man caves along the way. Thanks again for a great video 🙏!

Levi, very well done video and on a subject that I am very passionate about, so I apologize this comment is as long as your video, lol. First off really like the design on all 3 but for me particularly the 70 with the deep pockets, I don't have a cinema camera but I very much like the idea that I can put my Mavic and longer lenses straight in. I also like the the rear panel entry, a lot of bags have this feature but for the same reasons you specified I think its key for outdoor adventure anything (photography, hiking, hunting, fishing, etc). There is nothing worse than putting your bag down in the dirt after you have been hiking and sweating and having the back panel get covered in dirt or other debris. Definite thumbs up on that. I also like all the different configurations, I never pack my bag exactly the same for every adventure. So before I get into a little rant below I want to give a tiny bit of back ground about me. I am 6'4" and when I was 26 I broke my back racing motocross. I received a 50% compression fracture on my L1. I am 48 now and in good shape but a couple of things that irritate my old injury are sitting long periods in a car and a medium to heavy weight back pack that doesn't fit properly. I have spent a lot of time backpacking, hunting and shooting video and photography in the back country. For a long time I struggled to find a good hunting pack that would fit until 10 years ago a start up company custom built me a pack that truly fit my torso length. Here is where the rant comes in and its not just this bag but every single internal framed camera pack I see on the market. None are designed to adjust for tall people or folks with a long torso. I know you showed the straps on the back can adjust but that is only one piece of the puzzle. The top straps need to be able to be moved higher as well. Looking at you wear the pack in this video I can tell that this pack doesn't fit you properly. The top straps or overload straps (what I call them) should be roughly at a 45 degree angle above your shoulders. This will suck the load of your pack against your body while relieving stress on your shoulders and back, also allowing the core of the packs weight to be carried on your hips. When the straps are hanging down (like it appears yours are) when you suck the straps up to pull the load in on your body it also pulls the packs weight off your hips and puts more stress on your shoulders and back. I have been using the old hunting pack for years for everything hunting, hiking, and camera gear and though it fits great its not well suited for camera gear and so I have been on the hunt for camera bag that not only will give me the features I am after but would fit me properly. I have no problem spending a good chunk of money on a quality pack, because I believe its the most important part of a persons adventure system, but I do have a problem spending a chunk on a bag I know won't fit :(. I am not expecting you to read this and have a resolution, but I am hoping the pack company is reading through your comments and will consider addressing this issue in the future, I very much like the 70s configuration, I think its the best I have seen. Do you think this is a good backpack for interrail in europe etc.? I think I'd get a small ICU for the bare minimum camera equipment and then pack the rest with clothing on the inside, a sleeping bag and a tent attached to the outside? I'd probably sleep most nights in motels so the most important thing is being able to carry enough clothing for me to just spontaneously stay as long as I want. I've seen 95l pure backpacking backpacks online which does seem a ton and maybe impractical to take around but it still made me curious to see if 70l minus the small ICU would be enough for my needs.

Can you clarify the point you made about what Core unit you use in the x50/x30. It sounded like you said you use the Medium DSLR in each, but I didn't think that fit in the x30? So are you actually using the Medium Mirrorless in the x50? If so how does that fit, given it's slightly less deep than the Medium DSLR. Also you mentioned you can reduce the size of the x50 if not needed. Do you just do this through cinching down the straps? Does this interfere with the door opening or anything else about the bag (the side pockets?) Thanks!
@Levi_Allen
@Levi_Allen 5 жыл бұрын
correct. It's Medium mirrorless for the x30 and medium dslr for x50. Although you could put the medium mirrorless in the x50, but at as you mentioned you would need to tighten the side straps a little, or have some clothing behind it to fill it out fully. I didn't specifically use that setup

Love the review and variety of settings that you show these bags in. I pre-ordered the X50 for travel and daily use, but wonder about the size of the bag as a day pack, when traveling. (Mirrorless) camera gear + kids stuff quickly fills a bag. How well does the X50 pack down if you do not stack the top, compared to the X30? Does your GH5 with microphone attached fit in the Medium DSLR core unit, for example with some space left for 2-3 lenses and a Mavic Air?
@Levi_Allen

I would be fine using a slimed down x50 as an everyday bag, but I have been accused of liking larger bags. You would need to remove the mic depending on what angle it was placed into the bag

Hey man! Thanks for the in-depth review! Super helpful! I shoot a lot of climbing media and have a few bigger projects coming up, one multi-day backcountry trip with a 150-600mm lens and medium-sized fluid-head tripod. The weight involved in carrying backpacking gear, climbing gear and filmmaking gear (especially with long lenses) all together is definitely a concern for me with the adjustable strap system. Have you put the pack through the wringer as far as large loads deep in the backcountry? And do you still feel confident with the strap system? I am leaning toward this bag for sure, but don't want to end up having to carry 60-70lbs of gear 10 miles with a broken strap. The pack looks amazing! But thats my one concern before pulling the trigger. Thank you!

@Levi_Allen
@Levi_Allen 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t mind the waist belt on the 50. Have you had a chance to try them on? I think if the waist belt was more padded it might become more unwieldy for day to day use, and I’d need to take it off the bag more. If the waist belt is fitted for your hips correctly it works well. I haven’t noticed anything beyond the normal aches and pains I get from carrying a large bag

Levi Allen, I ordered the X30 for my GH5S adventure setup with ultralight camping and traveling in mind. I pack light and actually enjoy having a backpack that I can’t just “stuff all the things” in it (or else I tend to bring too much gear). Does the X30 accept the DSLR medium core unit? On the Kickstarter it doesnt explicitly stay it’s compatible with the X30.
@Levi_Allen
@Levi_Allen 5 жыл бұрын
It's not built specifically for the Medium DSLR, but I fit it in there (its also what I'm showing in the video) just fine. It's a little snug, but I appreciate the extra 1" or so. The mirrorless size is more of a perfect fit inside. The mirrorless is honestly a great option. Totally agree that sometimes a smaller bag is better because it forces you to pack small

@@zoltanlaszlo6673 I ended up getting the Explore 60 during the Black Friday sale. I'm sure the Action X bags are awesome, it just wouldn't have arrived in time for my trip. The Explore 60 was perfect for my 3 day backpacking trip. The only gripe I had with it was the side pouch - the items I put inside of it were hard to secure with the side strap system. Also I had to spend more for the accessory pouch that attaches to the waist belt, a feature that's usually built in to other bags. I was impressed with the adjustability of the harness system. There was more than enough space for all my camping and photography gear. I wouldn't recommend this bag for short hikes or everyday carry, but I'm looking forward to using it again for travel and backpacking once the pandemic is over...

@@k3kkus0 thanks very much for your reply! I do have a dedicated 70L hiking bag and just ordered the medium dslr V2 insert today. I'll see how that fits my hiking bag and will go from there. My current lowepro bag is just a pain in the back, I becoming to hate it! The camera half of it isn't big enough, and the top compartment isn't big enough. Can't even fit a proper water bottle to the side pockets! So it will go for sure! May go for the x50!?! Would also want to use it for traveling... Not cheap tho eh?

The camera cube is rigid but not padded and protected enough. There is only a front nylon opening and that should be padded as well so camera and lenses fit snug and pulled out of the bag while being safely contained. Also more protection if a laptop is smashed in there. I don’t want a laptop smashed up against my lenses with only a thin sleeve. Also the laptop sleeve can’t fit a 16inch MacBook. I like the concept and the rigid frame, but they should have dedicated sizes. Even the large strap settings were too small to be carried comfortably. I would much rather take my ULA pack with a more protected cube stuffed inside Maybe not as easy to grab gear, but it carries better, lighter and more protection

@@Levi_Allen I ended up keeping the Shimoda for day stuff on the trail and all around camera bag. I haven’t seen a better dedicated camera bag that beats shimoda. I just think for long outings in the backcountry the weight of the pack and not having dedicated torso sizes is something that shimoda should address. Then it would be the ultimate backcountry camera bag. Your videos are awesome by the way!

I just have one question... does the bag want to go on a run with me? lol #runwithlevi 😂 Seriously though, I've been shooting out of my explore40 for a couple years and that bag is freaking incredible and I'm sure the action series is all of that and more. Love everything that shimoda has done. I actually was on a Skype call with Ian around the beginning of the year talking about some shimoda stuff and shooting some work and it was incredible getting to talk with him about shimoda and what they want to do and be to the industry. I just absolutely love everything about this company and their products. Absolutely amazing stuff

Do you think the 50L would be SO BIG on a woman’s back? I feel like most camera bags have been made for men, but curious if you think the 50L would work? Or go 30L?

It’s really depends on if you’ve used larger bags before and don’t mind. And also how tall you are. If your traveling for months will you have other luggage for clothes? Is it just needed for camera gear or other stuff as well? I know there’s images on the Kickstarter of women wearing the 50, that might help for reference

Levi Allen id have my AWAY carry on for clothing :) so the backpack would be solely for camera equip and day to day things. I’ve got a BMPCC4k setup, so it’s a little more equip than a mirrorless setup
