We often got asked what bow to pair with the instrument. This is a demonstration of how much the tonal difference a bow can make, from the very cheap bow, to 900.00 quality pernambuco bow.
Bow #1: $25 dollar brazilwood bow, octagonal stick
Bow #2: $45 dollar carbon fiber bow, round stick
Bow #3: $900 dollar pernambuco bow, round stick

I think the only thing proven in this video is that an amazing musician can make any bow sound amazing.

However, I noticed that when this musician held a superior bow, he played into each note to enjoy the richness of the overtones the superior bow released from the strings.

I think for a violinist trying very hard to improve the tone, the difference is quite significant each step up. But I agree that to most people the difference is really marginal and many may not notice any.

Direct demonstration and straight to the main point without the need of explaining too much 👍🏻

I am learning about this myself. I started with a $25 mass-produced bow, moved up to a $200 Dorfler, and then to a $1500 August Prell bow. The better bow improved my tone, and mades it easier to play better and to properly execute all of the bowing techniques (I am still working on them). Practicing with a better bow, I can now make the lesser bows work better as well, but I still prefer the August Prell bow (and it is the best I can afford).

#1 was my favorite, then 2, 3.

It was clear that the violinist's whole disposition was different for the last bow. If the performer thought the $25 one was the $900 one, the result would be different. Bows do make a difference, but so does psychology.

Here is how we can compare: bow1: 0:01 0:24 bow2: 0:55 1:20 bow3: 1:50 2:14 Prize reflects both the wallet and level of professional demands. Most amateurs cannot hear the difference between 2 and 3, anyway. But the comfort and balance might be completely different factor that we cannot hear from video without comment from musician himself. Maybe for high professionals or solists, justified 3, in most cases.

You played different songs at different times with different bows. You play great but this demonstration didn't show anything. Play a short bit with one bow and then the next and then the next - with the same bit. Then another short bit again with each. I have absolutely no idea how to compare what you've played

$45 one. The $900 is add up since there is way too little difference. Get a codabow diamond next time.

The first one sounds like it limits the resonance the violin makes. Second one sounds fair enough, although the third one sounds so well-balanced and the player had the most control with it.

Are there any links to the bows? I’m looking to buying a new bow as my current one’s hairs snapped off

Nice. You should do a video whether a group of experts can tell the difference. The important thing is that even the violinist will not even know which bow is being used, as they will be blind folded when playing, as to not give any bias to any bow. Regardless, the bow/violin at the end is pretty minor compared to the skill of the violinist.
