I have purchased a second hand car that cost me around my one month salary. Super happy to drive it without any emi. Car should be used as utility but in india , it is used as luxury. The money that I saved , I spent in paying back my plot loan whose cost is now almost double than when I purchased it. So by smartly investing , I have both car and property debt free and I am moving forward to use my plot in such a way that it will give me stable regular side income.

There is simply no rule like 20-4-10 or 50% of salary that can work for India. Reason: taxes go as high as 60% in the final value of the car. The only practical metric for India is cost of ownership vs net income. If you have a 1 lakh income after tax, and primary expenses say 50k including rent, food, travel, education cost etc as applied. You are left with 50k disposable income, assuming you put 20k in savings & investments you have 30k remaining. Feel free to buy any car that costs you below 30k including EMI, gas and annual maintenance. 3.6 lakh annual budget should give you a decent car unless you are a chapri bcos in that case logic does not apply to you. I am assuming you had the capital saved for a 20% downpayment.

Yes a middle class US resident can buy a bmw but they can't afford to have a cook, nanny, maid, driver like many middle class indians. This woman is completely silly and does not understand basic economics and how the cost of goods and services differ based on development and economic conditions. Please don't listen to her and focus on becoming wealthy instead of appearing wealthy. 2ndly, a person with 10 lacs income can buy a good used car for 5 lacs in a good segment. My family only bought 2nd cars during my entire childhood, just need to have a little bit of understanding of how to check if the car is in good condition (pay a mechanic 500 bucks to inspect the car). Be smart, you deserve a safe and secure life, with good wealth for your family and retirement much more than impressing some random people at a traffic signal.
