I purchased a 2005 GMC 2500HD with a Duramax diesel engine at a Copart auction. In this video, I introduce the new project and we figure out if I got a good deal.

$3400 is a steal for this truck especially considering you're willing and capable of doing all the repairs yourself. Seeing the clean interior, new-ish batteries, and all the fluids at the correct levels are promising signs about how it was maintained. This truck is definitely worthy of being saved. You could replace every single part on this truck and the cost wouldn't even come close to that of a new 2wd base model 1500 gasser let alone a crew cab 2500 with a diesel and 4wd. Plus its more reliable and way cheaper to fix than a new truck. IMO Chevy already hit their peak with these early 2000's pickups. As you said these trucks hit a sweet spot between being modern enough to be comfortable and powerful, while still being reliable, simple to repair, and not loaded with tons of BS electronics and emissions garbage. I just don't see Chevy ever topping this generation of pickups.

Yessir. My dads got a 09 2500 Duramax with 345,000 miles and it’s had no engine issues. Had many minor issues with the interior, drive train and other small things. And some more major issues with drivetrain like the transfer case and transmission but the engine has been outstanding. He takes care of his stuff really good so that helps.

That is a stock driveshaft, fuel cooler and fuel lines tend to rust and leak. Looks like most of the brake lines were replaced, that’s good. Stock tie rods are undersized and likely worn out, will likely need an upgrade to a stronger aftermarket along with the pitman arm. Also the intermediate steering shaft most likely makes clunky sound, replace with newer design. My 2005 is going strong, congrats Waldo!

From the looks of it,....you will be replacing more than just crossmembers. At the very least,...you will be plate patching some of the rails in the back 1/3 section. Pick 4 symmetrical holes under frame and do a x measurement to make sure she is square first,...before you do anything. Hmm if ya got anymore questions. Russ

Even my 2002 Silverado WT had automatic headlights. They were standard equipment. I didn't have the crossmember rust, but I had to replace the leaf spring mounts in the back. When I got rid of it, the back bumper had holes through it and the bottoms of the doors were getting soft. Brake lines, fuel lines, and evap lines all had to be replaced at one point too. GMT800s are good trucks, but they are prone to rust.

Brandon is going to be a great build. I think an aluminum skirted flatbed would look great and give you at least 2 small toolboxes. For the vibration also check exhaust mounts and make sure no baffles are broken in the muffler. They can give bad vibration also. Love your The Office shirt. Very cool. @Waldo's World Check the drivers engine mount they tend to tear rubber off the steel from the torque. Some have throughbolted to limit some of that. Waldo, Ill be following this build closely. I have a 99 sierra sle z71 4x4. It is a single cab short bed fleetside truck. Im only the 2nd owner. It has 150, 000 miles on the ls4.8. The rockers are gone and the wheel arches are shot. One frame rail has some rust through. I picked up a rust free Texas bed for it very reasonably. One of the fuel lines along the frame has started to leak. So ive purchased all new fuel fuel lines and stainless steel brake lines from inline tube. They are high quality and vry affordable. Since youll have your bed off anyway, you might consider them. Im having the frame media blasted and repaired before I coat it liberally with por15. Looking forward to your progress

I'd say that's a fantastic purchase and a fantastic price. One of the other Achilles heels of the early year duramax was the injectors, so said an old friend of mine who ran the classes for GM technicians. I think the LLY engine in yours mostly resolved that issue, and I think you don't have to remove the valve covers if need to get at them. Sadly, I've never had good luck in winning any of the auctions in my vicinity. All of the ones I've participated in seem to go way too close to retail to justify buying a salvage vehicle that will need a fair bit of work.

Starting February 7, 2022 you have to go to a school to get your cdl if you don't have at least a permit before then. Just a heads up on that. Can't wait to see how the duramax turns out.

Oh, thanks for the heads up, I didn't know that! I'd love to go to a school to get an unrestricted CDL-A, but my plan was just to use my truck/trailer and end up with air brakes and semi restrictions on my class A 🤷‍♂️

I actually just picked up a 99 crew cab 3500hd 6.5 from a copart auction with my 05 duramax! You'll be happy with the duramax, climbing grades with loads behind them doesn't slow down these trucks at all. Not going to lie, not really sure what I'm going to do with my 99 3500hd but it will most definitely never replace my 05!

A crew cab, nice! Yeah, the GMT800 truck will be a better long distance driver than the 3500HD, but I think both have a place in my (virtual) garage 👌

I had an 02’ LB7 with 967,000 when I traded it off. Never shouldn’t gotten rid of it. But it goes to show that preventative maintenance goes a long way!

It’s easier to buy a new frame from down south, you can get a cab and chassis frame that will work good for the flat bed

Sweet still pre DEF, which is just something else to break. Most of the trucks I work on have problems, in one way or another, with their DOC, SCR, DEF system.

To your question of the aluminum driveshaft yep it's stock on them as everyone of them i've had has had one from a 01 2 03's and a 06 and my biggest recommendation headstud that thing the 6.0 isn't the only diesel with headgasket blowing potental. And $3,400 is a steal for that truck trucks here in tn at the auction looking like that would bring close to 10k at the auction

If you bullet proof the 6.0 it's as reliable as the 7.3. the issues is doing that before the erg cooler failing causes head warping

Good purchase and nice review Waldo. I bought a copart Ddoge 2500 earlier this year. Currently looking at another. Good buys if you can do some work and repairs and not afraid of some miles. Nice truck! Lets go Brandon!

Oh no kidding you're in NH that's cool. Me as well. I also have a lly duramax with slt trim package and 4 doors. Only had mine about 2 years. Paid 7500 for it and at this point I don't even want to say what's been put into it money wise. So either you got a great deal, or you're going to be finding out pretty rapidly that it has a lot of issues. Head gasket, oil cooler and the list goes on. Basically my truck had absolutely everything that a diesel owner has nightmares about lol. Which of course I was unaware of upon purchase. At any rate you got yourself a new subscriber and I am also in your state. I always enjoy it when a channel creator is local to me. I relate to the salted rds that's for sure!

@@WaldosWorld you're welcome and this is true! I've been taking my truck to TMS Diesel in Weare because I don't have the means to do a lot of the work myself at home. Well, I'm sure I could but without a lift some stuff is just too big of a hassle. I've yet to determine how I feel about them yet. Kind of still to be determined, but they definitely have some type of ego driven attitude, like "we're so busy and so good we don't need your business, so if you don't like what's going on you can go somewhere else" type deal. At least that's the way it seems. They never used those words with me. h However the 1st time I had a complaint, the guy on the phone told me if "I'm going to swear I can just come get my keys". This is after spending over 25,000 at their shop. On warranty parts that I have to go through them to have the warranty made good on. So... depending on how they handle things this time, I may have some interesting KZbin videos on that situation coming up in the near future. They're in control of it it will be a happy story or the opposite lol.
