How much does it cost to sail around the world? Do you have a lot of money saved? What is your boat life monthly budget? How much does KZbin pay? How much did all the stuff on your boat cost? All of these questions are ones we get asked a lot, so thought we'd give you an honest (painfully so) simple video with this information! We found it difficult when we were first looking at sailing to know exactly what everything cost, partially because every boat, every person, every country, and every budget makes for a completely different experience! But also we found people a little reluctant to discuss exactly what they had spent or how much they earned (which is totally fair) but we wanted to make a video that other people like us may want to watch. Discussing all the money we have put into the boat so far was a little disturbing to say the least 😂 but we feel it was money well spent!

A great little video with lots of info that people will find useful I’m sure. I’ve been following you for a while, not sure why I hadn’t subbed before. Are you still in Falmouth? Budget boaters? Keep up with the videos and I’m sure your KZbin fan base will grow, just look at the wildlings. There are plenty of ways to save money going forward whether it is on boat maintenance, equipment, food or whatever but remember you are doing this to enjoy. How good are you at fishing? RADAR is definitely a good addition and I would recommend the ability to set out a second anchor. I had a long length of nylon with chain which I used in V formation with the chain off the bow, fore and aft in a river and as the main anchor when I had to dump the chain in a storm, (I was fortunately able to retrieve the chain and my anchor when the storm blew over but I was very thankful for the backup).

We do have a second anchor we keep in our stern locker 😊. We haven't had to use it yet so might one day soon go out and practice with it somewhere safe for some experience. The Radar we feel has definitely helped us especially with night sailing. Thank you for commenting 😁🤙

Another excellent video; thank you. You've certainly had a mix of weather since you've been in Falmouth. If this weather keeps up you might not want to go anywhere! You're setting out with a well equipped boat in good condition so I'd say your budget is perfectly doable as long as nothing major goes wrong and you use marinas very sparingly (preferably not at all!) The "Big Boat" phenomenon is quite a recent thing. Fifty years ago a 30 footer was a big boat and IIRC none of the boats in the 1979 Fastnet Race was more than 36ft. Two 12ft boats have successfully circumnavigated. A fairly famous one was done by Serge Testa starting and ending in Brisbane, but a much less well known one was completed by Russian Evgeny Gvozdev. His was even more remarkable because, due to lack of money, he built the boat out of mainly scrap wood on the balcony of his flat! His was a much longer voyage as well because he started and ended at the eastern end of the Black Sea. Not only that, but a few years earlier he'd circumnavigated on an 18ft boat designed for sailing on inland lakes. Sven Yrvind is an interesting chap too. He has a KZbin channel and a website. He is currently at sea between the Azores and Ireland in an 18ft homebuilt boat which is somewhere in proportion between a normal boat and a decked over kayak. He's been ocean sailing in very small boats since the early 1960's. Obviously these boats are for singlehanders, but it shows what can be done. Sven Yrvind did cross the Atlantic with his then wife from France to Canada in a 15ft boat;; although they did split up not long after.... Sven is a real low budget person, or he was when he was younger. I remember he heated his boat through winter with the element from a kettle he'd got from a charity shop. Quite honestly you strike me as the sort of people who'd be quite successful at this.

Wow these people are incredible! Sorry its been a while before getting back. It is definitely some of these guys that have given us some inspiration, and some others we haven't heard of there. We have watched some interviews done with Sven and he is so incredible with how he sails around the world! First saw him on La Vagabonde's channel and then began watching his channel/ reading his blogs. Reminds you what's possible with the right determination, and people like him have definitely motivated us to just do it and figure it out as we go. we do hope to keep our sailing simple and fix things as we can along the way, we have a good well prepared boat as you said, so that a good start :D In terms of the weather, we left Falmouth when it glorious sunshine, and got to Spain and had nothing but rain for a week haha- thankfully it's brightened up a bit now! When I bought my first serious boat, I was told to make sure I had at least a third of the boat cost in the bank for all the 'extras'... too many people using all their budget on the initial purchase! I've found with cruising on a budget, I can do 4 days at anchor and then 1 day in a marina for water, leckie and a wash! lol... I'm in IT (need to run laptops etc) so apart from my solar kit, my best buy was an alternator upgrade! I tend to motor sail alot on cloudy days! lol

That seems about right, we were also told something similar. Though we ended up going way over that due to all the tech upgrades 😅😅Fortunately so far our solar seems to keeping up with our demands (though we don't have fridge, TV etc) but it we had to charge our laptops more (which are seriously power hungry 😅) we'd struggle. 4 days at anchor one in a marina sounds like a pretty good setup! You made tbe right descision by buying a smaller boat, maintenance and gear costs grow exponentially , as LOA increases, you might feel less comfortable in a smaller vessel, but Seaworthimess, is what's truly important. Be well !

There are ways and means and this is in no way intended to criticise your choices but the fancy electronics, whilst nice to have, aren't really necessary and are usually also costly ongoing if you want chart updates. Many just use Navionics on a tablet for navigation. Insurance is another area where you can save money - many long term, long distance cruisers insure third party and self-insure their own boats, you might consider this when you have more experience. It can sometimes be impossible to get comp insurance depending on your boat, crew and sailing intentions anyway. You don't mention what ground tackle you have, this is a biggie if you're going to anchor a lot to avoid the expense of marinas, anchoring is much nicer anyway if you're somewhere warm. You need bomb proof ground tackle and to have developed confidence in using it, once you have that it'll make a huge difference. Marinas, eating out, how much you drink and whether you smoke all add up and massively affect how much money you need, I think 4k is just doable but you'll need to do all your own maintenance (I'd be interested to know exactly what your £750 engine service actually consisted of, that's eyewateringly expensive). The electronics package is by no means essential for a lot of people, we found it worthwhile as we are planning long term sailing around the world - and expect at times we'll be faced with fog and times when night sailing may be difficult (we have faced this already) and radar and AIS we personally think is an extremely important part of safety for ourselves and others. We are also as you know very inexperienced sailors so feel it's a smart thing to do. our chartplotter uses Navionics, however we have the added functionality of weather routing which again, we've found very useful for planning longer passages. This is why we've mentioned in the video this is all by no means essential for everybody, but for us we feel a good use of our money. I think we mentioned that we have a 10kg Rocna anchor, and 50m chain, definitely need to keep working on our confidence and technique for anchoring. very good point about the costs. We're able to keep the food side of things quite cheap with spearfishing and foraging, and not really 'eating out' type people nor smokers. Definitely so many factors for different people as to how much you can comfortably live on. Also in terms of the engine, that was a service and to change worn engine mounts 👍 hope this answers a couple of your questions, if not ask away. Thanks again for watching

Hello Jade and Brynn, I just found your channel yesterday. I grew up around boats and I thought rather than a tiny house, living on a boat, exclusive of the purchase, would be cheaper than renting an apartment. Also, I realize your video was from a year ago and the cost of living here in the United States has gone through the roof, but your marina prices seem to be 50% of what I am familiar with regarding marina slips in New England where I grew up. Finally, I have seen a lot of sailboats under 30 feet for sale in the $8,000 to $10,000 range. Much sucess in living your lifestyle of freedom.

Hey David! Yeah, even with the raise in the cost of living we've actually found living on a sailboat to be by far cheaper than any other housing option for us. Marina costs do vary a lot, but even the expensive ones are cheaper than rent in the UK! Hi I’m 60 and going through this process my goal is a 45 yacht. Why did you not put water desalination at the top of your list ? It’s the top of mine there on 3 grand . Have plan B’s for instance I saw you couldn’t cook no gas I would have as a back up one of those single gas burners that you can get gas for anywhere . I live these programs do you watch captain Q yacht hunter? But good luck I may bring it forward 3 years but want to do course and get some experience with other sailors. Hey James, that's great that you're planning to get your own yacht too! We would love some form of water desalination, but the cost was just too much for us at that time. We opted to spend on the navigation package, as for two new sailors planning long passages (night sailing, fog, all weather conditions possibly) we felt this could really help with us and the boat safety. Water is readily accessible for free or cheap in the Med so we didn't feel it had to be a priority right now. However, when we do plan on ocean crossings or heading to the Caribbean- we would definitely look at getting a water maker for this. Never seen captain Q yacht hunter, will check it out! I am seriously either hating you guys or loving you guys. I have wanted to get a decent boat that would be able cruise around SouthEast Alaska and live on. Then I found you guys and you make it seem possible whereas most of the channels don't seem realistic on my budget ( I am doing an early retirement in about a year so have to think about small income....so have put in bids on a couple of boats in my area that were turned down (I am not going to go into huge debt) and will continue my search...So love or hate? ummm....I appreciate this video specifically due to breaking down some costs that I hadn't thought of before. We also didn't want to get into debt (having just paid off all of our debt previously from credit cards and loans) and found so many good sturdy boats for cheap (the UK seems to have lots on offer) Wishing you all the luck in your search and hope you find something suitable soon ( Alaska is one of our dream travel destinations). Whenever I type in a type of boat I would be interested in and the price range I would be interested in, I get all the boats in the UK for sale popping up. Where I am at either the boat would be only good in wonderful weather or a boat sturdy enough will be in horrible shape. Since we are relatively remote, anything that I have been looking at is twice the price of what you can get elsewhere. Well once again, thank you for your channel! If you guys ever do get to Alaska let me know, I have some great spots to dive for scallops and crabs or fishing for Haibut!

I think too that the trend in KZbin sailing channels seems to be towards boats of 40 ish feet and even edging to 50 feet, for a couple. I was more than happy for a few years on a Verl 27, which I rebuilt, even doing my own osmosis treatment. Then sailed away single handed from England to the Caribbean. Remember the Pardy's, a well known sailing couple, cruised on a 22 footer. Hurley 22 is a solid boat. Contessa 26 has sailed the world and there are many others which are solid capable boats languishing in yards around the world waiting for someone to take them away and give them a new life.

@@ChasingCurrents I too had people call me straight out mad when they saw my boat having told them I was planning a trans Atlantic, so you are not alone. Shane Acton on Shrimpy at 18ft I think it was went round the world, twice! It's odd really that at the time I had no intention to document my travels. I took a few photo's of the osmosis work I did on film but throughout my time cruising I shot very little, despite being a supposedly keen photographer. I still have my ships log but often time I went days without updating that. Looking back now, I wish I had made more of an effort. Digital camera's and video were not practical when I left in 97, indeed GPS was just about affordable for me. My current plans now do include trying to document more if I can just get my present boat launched and down the river Dart somehow.

Thanks so much Lisa 😁 we didn't have any trouble insuring our 1978 boat with GJW insurance, though there was some issues with offshore. To do the crossing from England to Spain we had to go at certain times (I.E before the rougher weather) and have a 3rd crew member. The boat actually came with a survey so that wasn't an issue, though as we added some value to the boat with electronics we got a valuation recently that we gave to them. I think the main key was that we had a survey recently. But you could save some money doing your own diesel engine servicing...and several other stuff, like solar panels ( if you knew where to look). Try n get buy a coffee through PayPal. I'm sure you'd get more coffees. I tried to b.m.a.c but had problems. No p.p...i only work through pay.p.

Hey Trevor, that's exactly what we do :) we've done all our own engine services since this and installed our solar panels ourself too. Yeah, buymeacoffee did allow paypal the whole time we've had it until they stopped allowing Paypal a few weeks ago which is V annoying! We will set up a PayPal link for our KZbin though, thanks for the suggestion :)

How about making the sail boat self sufficient and sail to where is a off grid location an live there?

That's the plan! That's why we installed more than enough solar for what we need, and navigation/safety equipment to aid us to cross oceans from the UK on our smaller boat. We are working on various other ways of self sufficiency, but it's all a work in progress as we'd never sailed up until 2 years ago - a big learning curve.

It's been interesting because we're very inexperienced, we haven't always known what is a need vs a want in terms of upgrades/safety etc And there's so much conflicting information online too that it's hard to separate the two. We're at a stage now where because we've finally left our jobs/left the safety of stable income and a house to stay in, that we're a lot more strict. We know that we may not earn much money as we travel so we're very careful to only purchase things we're sure we need now. Yes we love Free range sailing! They are one of the first channels that inspired us to do this. Thanks for commenting 👍

I have a question here. Are small boats (like 24') more dangerous to sail across the ocean than a larger boat, or size does not matter at all?

We're definitely no expert on this but from what we have learnt is that its not always about the size of the boat but its design. There are some small boats that have done large passages. But its a general rule that larger boats hold up to bad weather better. A consideration we have is that our little boat roles around more and isn't as comfortable as say a boat 10ft longer that is heavier. I hope this helps a little. All our best Brynn and Jade

This is a bit of a subjective question 😜 For me the answer is - more than I have, especially with Covid. But as you know I have still done 8000nm Bluewater sailing with only a depth sounder and phone as my electronics. The main thing is to have the skills to deal with the situation you find yourself in, and at least a reasonable collect of tools and materials. Though I do manage to get a fair bit of things by scavenging and salvaging, metal, tropical wood etc. That said, the cost of doing all that is reduced for me, as I'm a Chinese Junk Rig, although mitigating that is the fact I'm steel hulled, which costs maintenance in paint etc. Anyway, sorry about the TL:DR 😄

We agree this is so subjective, each boat has totally different needs. On top of that every has different idea of being budget. Were definitely more budget now we are sailing and traveling, its the getting ready to leave bit which has cost the most for us ☺.

Can be! All in all though, depends where you're going. Coastal hopping around the UK we'd have spent probably not even a quarter of this. We're planning on taking Talisman all around the world, and plan to be offshore at times, plus hadn't sailed before last year! So felt some things a necessary spend for safety. Also, the cost for marinas isn't one we'll be spending from now on living on the hook, so that saves around £300 per month at least!

Not at all. As we said in the video, we planned to sail around the world offshore so felt safety equipment necessary. We spent a total of 25000 I believe, for the boat kitting it out plus a year's worth of marina fees. This is all one off payments too, so each year after this is virtually free or at least very very cheap. Our costs each month now including food are between £200-300, I would say this very possible 👍

Its just under 3.5 tons and were super happy with the anchor so far. The anchor that came with the boat was 7kg I think and they had used it for years, with 50m of chain and a 10kg anchor we feel pretty safe but I'm sure if that changes we will talk about it on a video 😊
