Thank you for sharing your experience and thank you for the wise words about orcas. We have been meeting orcas many times in northern Norway while we produced a film for Swedish Television. There we never noticed any aggressive behavior. Thanks again for the lovely film!

I thought the Vega was solid fiberglass with no balsa core anywhere, which might be a qualifier for deck stepped mast issues.

Love the content, subscribed. But, does anyone have knowledge of a vanlife to small sailboat life 24ft to 30ft, the dana 24 looks nice but price. I'm thinking of wise purchases that are dual purpose.

I am staggered that they made no attempt to free the prop from the net by getting overboard with a knife. A 1500 euro charge was completely avoidable. Also, why motor when the wind was absent? Why not wait and fix the prop?

We are on our second VHF in 7 years with a wireless remote mic which has failed. Even when new they don't last a full day on the water and need to be recharged often while under way. Like anything with a rechargeable battery the battery gets weaker and weaker with time and use. After a couple of years they just won't hold a charge. The batteries in our B&G wireless mics were not user serviceable. That's why we are shopping other brands like ICOM and Standard Horizon. Our next VHF is definitely going to have a WIRED remote.mic as well as a WIRED cockpit speaker. The tinny little speaker in a remote microphone (wired or not) is just not up to the task of giving you good audio in adverse conditions. A loudhailer is great. We mounted our horn unit on the mast but only just about .2 meter up. It's away from big greenwater but is up to the task of spray no problem. The talkback feature is great but on our terrible B&G VFH it was so hard to initiate that we hardly ever used it. Also, with our B&G radio when the talkback intercom feature was activated the VHF radio was not working so if a nearby vessel was trying to hail us while anchoring we would not know it if we were using the TalkBack feature. How do you like this VHF after using it a while? We are full-time cruisers and really lean on the VHF as a necessary tool. A poor or marginal unit is a hardship we have found. We are now.shopping for VHF number 4 since we have bought our boat in 2016 (not including handhelds.) Our previous VHF purchases were in this same price range, our current B&G V80 was about $800 when the wireless remote mic was included.

I’m amazed you listed support as a plus. Most users, including myself, have had the extreme opposite experience. Lack of support is the only reason that I would never purchase B&G again. We have a Zeus3 12”, a Zeus 3 16”, 3 Triton II’s, Halo 24 Radar, VHF V100, VHF V60, NAIS, Autopilot and all ancillary equipment such as compasses etc. . At no time has everything worked as advertised. On hold time w support for us averages 4+ hrs. and has gone as long as 6hrs. Owners who have invested $$$ should not have to rely on often conflicting recommendations on FB or KZbin!

B&G is getting a really bad reputation. Even the Cat manufacturers are abandoning them. All my boats have had Raymarine and in over 35 years of use, not a single failure, although one took what seemed like forever to get correct in the initial setup.

i might be missing something but all the time i see that mercury outboard as backup also when the wind got calm you should have gotten into the water and cut the rest of that netting off and you would have been fine calling in the coastguard was certainly not needed but maby next time after you get your sealeggs you would respond to something that minor in a differnt way

An awful lot of valuable info. Thank you for putting it all together. Many will find this very very useful. One mega important issue for the budget sailor who is not in a financial position to sail off into the sunset that you have not specifically addressed is mooring costs for fin keel boats. Here in the UK marinas are generally very expensive. There are many real bargains to be found on the second market for older fin keel boat, but the annual mooring fee in a marina is sometimes close to 60% of the actual value of the boat. When one looks at affordable moorings in the 500 to 1000 pounds annual cost range, many are tidal with ability to take the ground essential, preferably with a fairly shallow draft . I was actually fortunate to sail the Eastern Med as a live aboard on a Jeanneau 35 (ex charter boat) while still youngish. For nearly7 years we cruised the Aegean and Ionian and have some incredible memories. We mainly anchored in the summer and usually got some very good winter marina deals. Our only income was eeking out our savings and the rental income from an inherited property However, when we had to return, the cost of keeping the Jeanneau in the UK was outside our budget so we sold in Greece and bought a 27ft lifting keel (Parker) on our return. We sail this regularly, it's a real thoroughbred, and have lived aboard without issue for up to 3 weeks on annual cruises to France/Belgium and Holland. Though, a few extra Jerries of water in the locker and 24 bottles of drinking water under the berths is pretty essential. Especially if you mainly cook on board.

I have a Bougie RV ice chest size, fridge or freezer. I think I paid less than $200? Pulls a little less than 50 watts. I got it for my little camper for more freezer space so I don't have to buy ice all the time. Thing works great both as bonus house freezer in and when I am on the road. My 300 watt power bank keeps it running for at least 7 hours when I am pulling down the road. It also runs on DC. About the size of a medium ice chest. If you can find a place for an ice chest and get power to it. You have a fridge or a freezer. I keep it on 0, but I t can be set higher for a fridge. Safe travels and enjoyed your video!
