I also think the comparison would have been better with a shallower snare!

On the superphonic I liked the triple flange. It sounded more open softer and sweeter. I was surprised actually.

S-Hoops on my 1977 Ludwig Acrolite work well. Like the cross-stick sound.

I put S Hoops on my PDP Concept Birch kit and they made them sound 100x better.

the heavier hoops seem to mute the attack a bit and it just changes into a completely different dynamic when there is more mass applied in the stroke

Never heard before the Angel Hoops thanks for share them!!! Bring woods hoops!!!

There was a very subtle difference to my ears, probably not enough of one to justify shelling out that kind of cash for the angel hoops. As an owner of snares with triple flange, die cast, and wood hoops, I'd say that the biggest, and most audible difference is between metal and wood hoops. If you ever get your hands on some wood hoops, definitely shoot them out between your metal hoops!

You can still get cheaper s hoops for like 20 on your local music site ...I must say it makes alot of difference in the rimshot and cross stick ...I play reggae so I notice the difference

I’ve been buying the single flange “stick chopper hoops” from Drum Factory Direct. Feels different. Sound? Idk. Thinking I need to put back on the original Hoops and see.

Is that Angel drum a wood shell? It sounds more like a metal shell than any wood drum I’ve ever heard.
@ColeParamore Жыл бұрын
It is indeed - it's actually a segmented wood shell. Unique construction vs. ply or staves.

Great video! Thanks for the info! Quick question - would bent hoops or warped shells make it very difficult to tune a rack tom?
@ColeParamore2 жыл бұрын
100% yes. Get that thing swapped out!

@@ColeParamore thanks! Even if it is just barely bent, will that still make a big difference? Just asking questions to help trouble shoot!

@@Coltonconnerdrums Could switching botttom and top hoops out, make it less noticable, but its a temp fix..

You can straighten hoops easily. Just be careful and push lightly. They bend easy. Google it, hard to explain. You ideally need a marble or thick glass surface to tell where they are bent. Quartz countertops and steel plate are not always truly flat.

Also I just recently took apart a mint Yamaha sensitive snare, sounded probably better than any snare I’ve heard, in a while anyway. No issues tuning. I was swapping heads for my buddy and the drum edges were not true. The top and bottom edges with heads removed were about 1/8” out when I put them on the marble. Alum DC hoops were flat, I have to finish top edge, which differs from bottom. So it’s probably some luck too, 50/50 shot hoop will cause trouble, but they are nothing to straighten or get back in round. Gentle process.

To me the Angel hoops make it sound a bit more gonky, as rdavidr puts it. With some types of music, that adds to the character of the song for the better. Some country /honky tonk or “earthy” music, could sound great.
