C-IEMs are definitely worth it. If you have the money to put into one, as it offers a better seal overall. Also has better material resonance with your ear. You would need to get a mould of your ears usually first and send it to the manufacturer. They're usually priced around 1000 USD for the cheapest pairs, but can go lower for 750 USD total (if buying from Japan, Kumitate Labs bought by a friend from SG, largely lower due to USD inflation). Just need to look into reviews of the unit you are considering before buying the custom. *hugs my 150 USD Intuaura Luna Plume*

It's interesting to hear you talk about IEMs as if they're only for musicians. Personally, I sold all my headphones after trying IEMs-they simply deliver a better, more beautiful sound. I also don’t agree with the idea of diminishing returns when it comes to high-end IEMs. I believe that the final 10% of performance from top-of-the-line models is where the magic really happens. My last three sets cost over $13,000, and nothing else in the world sounds like them. Ultimately, it's all about what you value in life.

This video is definitely from the musician's perspective. This is definitely meant to be a music channel rather than a general tech or audiophile channel. It sounds like what you're saying is at the end of the bell curve in cost is where you actually get the most benefit in sound quality. Totally respect that opinion! Also respect for having put down $40k on in-ears alone. That's some serious dedication.

The Classic Maple had the best of all worlds in terms of attack, resonance, and overall tonality. However, the Legacy Mahogany was my favorite because it sounded the “cleanest.” To me it had the fewest overtones and the low punch that mahogany is known for.

Great video. Very useful user experience. I’d like to add some personal experience that might be useful. I started out with Shure SE215. After using the universal fit for a while I started to inform myself about custom molds. Since I was on a budget I tried out the Amazon custom in ear mold kit ($ 11). After a couple of fails I ended up with a pair of molds with very good seals and much more confortable than the universal fit. This is a very cheap solution and because the mold is independent from the earbuds it has some other side benefits like maintaining the resell price of your IEMs, possibility of making new molds if your ear canal changes over time, etc. As a guitarist and vocalist I like to hear to my stereo mix as good as I can. The better the sound, the better I can perform. I need to enjoy what I’m hearing so I’m looking for IEM options to upgrade from my SE215. Other issues: most of the time I use my IEMs in rehearsal space with my band. So a good seal is critical to isolate myself from the drums. Only problem of a good seal as a vocalist is occlusion (you hear the resonance of your voice inside your head more than your actual voice). That phenomenon tends to become less noticeable as the volume of the in ear mix becomes louder.

I think that custom molds are more expensive because the drivers have to fit into a custom shell and be tuned for sound. The universal fits are probably designed to accommodate the drivers. I’m sure that the fact that they are custom does influence the cost too. As a motorcyclist, I would like custom molds to decrease the sound in the helmet, but they can’t stick out of the ear very much. At the moment, I’m using Mee Audio 6pros with custom molded tips. The work pretty well for my use.

Good video. I think you hit at pretty good price points on all points. As someone else pointed out, if you’re gigging, you will need to get some cases which would add around$400 onto the price. The used market is a wonderful thing that you missed on here. You could build a similar or better kit on the used market for around $2,500. If you’re just starting out and have the money, it might make sense to go new since you may not have the requisite skills to evaluate used drums. From what I’ve been seeing on the used market recently, you can easily get cymbals for about 40% of the new cost and most drum sets for 60% of retail. If you’re patient you can do better than that. Over the weekend I picked up a Zildjian K hybrid crash for $120. New, those retail for $365.

Very interesting. It made me look over what I have and reaffirm what I bought but with a few caveats... If I could do it over again, I'd get: DW 6000 hardware but with a 9000 hi-hat and kick pedal ( I friggin love how easy it is to nest those flat bottom stands together while remaining so stinkin' clean and sturdy enough to easily hold a 24" ride) 26" kick instead of a 24" kick. I bought what I thought would be more acceptable rather than what I really wanted. Hard lesson there. Get that 18" tom when I bought the kit instead of later. It's later and I still haven't bought it. And that's about it... I have a Ludwig Legacy Mahogany 13, 16, 24 and a 8x14 black beauty 22 thin low and 20 thin low K Cons, 20" Istanbul traditional crash, and a 16" set of crashes for hi-hats, A-Custom projection on bottom, K thin dark on top. Excellent, excellent, pair of crashes to use as hi-hats. I use an assortment of heads that I've come to love, Remo Vintage Emperor for tom batters, Aquarian Power center reverse dot on snare batter, Super kick 2 on kick batter, Aquarian snare-side head and classic clear for tom resos. Aquarian Regulator for kick reso. I bought the cymbals back in 2014, still haven't cracked them and I played hard when I need to. Bought the kit in 2017 or 2018. Total spent on everything was about $5k. I'm sure pricing on all that is very different now but it was a different time back then.

I respectfully disagree. I'm not looking to buy the best bang-for-the-buck drums; I'm looking to buy the best-sounding drums. They can cost more than $4,862, but I don't mind. It actually makes sense to buy the best-sounding drums instead of just 'best value' drums because, in this case, you know you have the best. You're unlikely to ever sell them, and you won't lose money on that sale.

Lacks body and depth to my ear. The only reason I'd buy one is to flip it for a profit down the line. I had custom made sand cast bronze snares from both Oriollo and Duluth made to my exact specs for about $1100 each. They sound miles better, and are totally unique when it comes to lug count, size/diameter, and bearing edge shape/snare bed profiles. This trend of $4,000+ cast bronze drums is absurd beyond belief, and anyone that buys into it is getting taken for a ride.

My Pearl accustic kit sounds great, and I do use it on stage. I think total with hardware, hi-hat, 3 crashes, 2 rides, and a china I spent around $1,250.00 total. Higher-end drums would have cost a lot more but would not necessarily sound better enough to justify paying what they want. For home practice(and I have used them live), I do have a high-end e-kit that is a little over double what I paid for my accustic kit. I think $4,862.87. Is a little expensive for a good drum kit. Sure, you could even pay more for a drum set, but I do not feel it is necessary to spend more than half of what you feel a good drum set should cost. There are videos demonstrating a cheap drum set and comparing it to a more expensive "high-end" drum set. The higher-end drum kit does sound a bit better, but the cheaper drum set once miked up, and EQed sounded pretty darn good and could definitely be used live. These days, most people, especially musicians, are not making tons of money like they once did, and with the cost of living going up like crazy it is hard to save up enough to spend tons on a drum set or any instrument. Most musicians these days have a job on the side of their band or are in multiple bands just to make enough money to live on, so spending even $4,872.87 for a drumset is tough and I do not think it is nessasary. Yes, there is a point where spending more than $4,872.87 on a drumset does not nessasarily get you a better sounding drumset. Those usually are made out of exotic woods and have expensive hardware. Playing drums is more expensive than playing most other instruments as the cost of replacing sticks, drum heads, and cymbals can add up, and so your $4,872.87 will end up costing more once you factory in the cost of the replacements. If I, for instance, spend $4,872.87 on a drum set, not only am I pretty much broke, and if I bust a head or a stick or, worse, a cymbal, I am screwed and will have to save up to replace them. If you spend what I did on a drumset, then you are not going to be totally broke and can budget in for the replacements. Also, your $4,872.87 for a drumset set was for drumset companies that are higher priced than other manufacturers as you are also paying for the name and reputation. In conclusion, you can get a more budget friendly drum set that will not break the bank and does sound fantastic(maybe not quite as good sounfing as a more expensive drum set, but very close), and definitely can be used live.

Excellent recommendation! I will follow your advice (if buying new to keep for decades) with a few changes: Use 2-leg hi-hats and get double pedals (double peds have become reasonably priced and are quite essential in modern drumming). Even DW 2000/3000 series double peds are of excellent quality. I've had mine for 10+ years with no issues -- still mint. Vic Firths are great but honestly are very expensive name-branded. Getting 5A 4-pack Vaters or SP Labs will cost only around 7 USD per pair with little to no quality loss.

Good topic, and I think you’re right about the point of diminishing returns. What they say is for most people, it’s not worth spending more. But for some of us, it’s always going to be worth it, depending on our situation or what we hear when we play. For someone that’s on cymbals, for another on snare drum, for some on premium double bass pedals. This is super useful if you’re relatively new to drums, the total spend in 2024 is staggering, even at this sweet spot you describe.

Buying new is already overspending. Personally I wouldn't even buy the items in this video used because you could get older pro gear for less. My first kit ever that is not only loud at gigs but records very well is a Pearl Fiberglass kit that I got for about $500. It's basically sounds like acrylic but you wont crack it from dudes moshing into your kit. If you have to buy new cymbals there are turkish cymbals companies that make cymbal packs for half the price and sound just as good if not better. Companies such as Istanbul Mehmet, Masterwork, Bosphorus, etc. For hardware I would recommed Tama Roadpro or older Pearl stands for the weight and over-engineering. for snares you gotta just get lucky, so far my shine snare drum is surprisingly cutting for being a maple shell. The real takeaway should be that great used gear exist and that new isn't worth it anymore.
