I have driven a school bus on the side for several years my primary job is a pastor and it helps supplement that. I get just under $25/hr with a 4 hour guarantee per route and normally don’t even work 2 hours for each route . I drive 2 routes per day (morning and afternoon) it’s a pretty good side gig to allow me to Support my family

Their not all bad, kids vary upon districts/area. I’ve been driving for 10 years, and driven some that are great and very respectful in some districts, and others not as much. So their not all bad, just depends on where you drive and the area you drive in. Plus if you have your own route and such it’s even easier, the kids will know your rules and just stand your ground. Gets easier after the first year and if you keep the same route, it’s easier when you know your kids/families and such.

I’m training to drive, and I’ve been monitoring on the bus. It really isn’t bad, at all. I work at a state school, though. Special needs kids. They’re sweet. Some can be a handful, but overall they’re really sweet kids and it’s fun to make jokes with them and see them smile. It’s rewarding. Pay is decent, even for a monitor. I’ll be making quite a bit more as a driver, though. I have my permit, just matter of getting the training done and passing my actual license test.

Depends on the agency/company. I got an offer for a school bus job that would give me an automatic 8 hours per day guaranteed even if I only usually work about 6 hrs. Most drivers would have to do 2nd and third runs though due to the driver shortage, so hours accumulate that way. Also, drivers have to report early and do things like a thorough pre-trip inspection of their bus and other tasks, so some companies can easily have 8 hours of work for their bus drivers daily. FYI I work as a transit bus driver and have no desire to drive a school bus full of kids full time 😂

Driver safety is far worse on transit than school buses all for about $3 more. She probably didn’t know what the starting pay is since they do it by “steps” so her pay would be different since she’s been there so long, so it would be different compared to a brand new driver coming in, especially if it changes throughout the years and probably doesn’t keep up with that anymore, she probably only knows for sure what her rate would be. I’ve worked in districts that like that pay scales are different for everyone depending on how long you been there, like “step 1” would be 1-2 year drivers, and so on and so fourth so pay scales would be different and more as your “step” seniority grows.
