Have you ever wanted to know how much these bikes really weigh full of fuel and ready to ride? KTM lists their weights one way, Yamaha lists them another. Since I always set off from the truck with a full tank of fuel, I’m going to be weighing my dirt bikes that way.
Today, I will be putting the 2017 KTM 300 XC, the 2015 KTM 300 XC, and the 2017 Yamaha YZ250X on the scale.
Here is a little preview:
The 2015 300 XC came in a 251.5 lbs, while the 2017 came in at 243.5 lbs. That is a savings of 8 lbs! The 2016 model was the same as the 2015. That means that the new changes with the frame, motor, and forks all added up to 8 lbs of savings. That is pretty amazing if you ask me.
Onto the Yamaha. It came in at 236.5 lbs. The YZ250X is 7 lbs lighter than the KTM 300, but the KTM has 3 lbs more fuel, at least 1 lbs more skid plate, and around 1 lbs in the rear disk gaurd. If you factor those in, the KTM is only about 1-2 lbs heavier even with e-start
Special thanks to my $10/month patrons on / dirtbikechannel

I'm a Yamaha fan so I gotta throw this out there; Don't forget to subtract the weight that typically goes along with owning a Yamaha. The weight can usually be found in between the humans ears and fills the majority of his upper skull.

I'm not an internet guy or KZbin person....so lucky to come across your videos...wealth of information. Way less intimidated buying a new/used bike. It's been since the late 90s riding. Hey kyle. Love the channel! One thing to remember, the reason the yz is so "heavy" is that back when two strokes ruled the ama ruled they had to weigh a minimum of 212lbs or something like that. Which of course that was without fuel. The real weight of motorcycles vs claimed is always kind of a joke. This was a result of the "works" bike era when a guy from Honda had a 175lb cr500.

if you go and see if Husqvarna uploaded their *live* TE300 launch, they show exactly where inside the crankcase that they had shaved the excess weight that wasn't required from the casting process. I’ve talked about picking up a used KTM 300. But it seems every KTM for sale has a “rebuilt bottom end with only 5 hours”. The bikes seem to have relatively low hours for bottom end rebuilds. Does anyone know why they seem to need bottom end rebuilds? Love to hear from knowledgeable owners/mechanics and not just guys that feel need to write “buy a 88’ CR250”

Did the 15 have a lithium battery? If it didn't then really you have forks at 3 pounds and battery at 2 to 3. Basically KTM shaved another 2 or so pounds off. Now if the batteries are both lithium that is pretty impressive.

Beto Beto Beta Xtrainer. Short seat height and is less of a trials/dirt bike hybrid than the freeride, making it more usable. I like Kyle's stuff, but he does here, what so many do. If you are going to compare weights - bring the bikes back to absolute standard. So, you get no guessing / excuses for bikes having this, not having that etc, etc. I've no bias to KTM or Yamaha., so I'm Not being a disgruntled fan boy. Things like the Handguards - the Bark Buster style handguards are much, much heavier than plastic 'flag' type guards. But the YZ doesn't have this or that, people are saying. Well, to stop all the excusing this, excusing that, weigh them as standard, without add ons or take offs. Kyle, they are not amazingly similar in what they have, and have not on them. Do this right. You do so much, right.

How much weight do you have to lose off a dirt bike before it starts to feel noticeably lighter?
@DirtBikeChannel
@DirtBikeChannel 7 жыл бұрын
Every bit helps... that is all I know. 2 strokes always feel lighter than the 4 strokes regardless of how much they weigh on the scale.

I gotta try a 2 stroke sometime. Nice vids.

Had to delete and re-post since I reversed my math and simplify the explanation. Power / Weight = Ratio. So, 30 HP / 240 Pounds = 0.125, 30 HP / 230 Pounds = 0.13 So X / 240 = 0.13 and X = 0.13 * 240 = 31.3 HP. So you gain 1.3 HP by dropping 10 pounds. Your bike will make lower HP in the lower RPMs so you gain more HP throughout, especially down low.

I shouldnt say it was wrong last time just I didnt multiply it by 100 since there was 1 more step missing. You got 1 /x and i left it like that in the comment. But this is a much easier explaination.

and dont forget you have to add your weight with tools and gear.

I was always the type to steer slightly away from what the manufacturers say because when they say a certain car tops out at 160 and you get in it and goes 200. Instantly you know that they have some facts wrong somewhere down the line. I believe what the engineers say vs what comes off the line will always be slightly different. That's why I love this type of stuff (real life proof)

I just bought the '17 tx300. I didn't see the sxs plate you have. They seem to have one for a '16 xc. is this what you used for you '17? I really want one asap. I emailed ads but no response yet. thanks

But.... the yz still has conventional forks instead of the air forks junk. The aluminum rear disc guards on the ktms vs. the plastic one on the yz is probably only a few ounces difference, not a lb. The joy of the yz is that it is free from all those frilly things and is just a stripped down fun machine. The ktm is a very light machine though.

Right, and I'm on record saying that I LOVE the YZ250X. It's slightly more fun than the 300 XC sometimes for me to ride. I'd pick the YZ over any bike I've ridden in the past 5 years.... other than the 2017 300 I have right now.

All of your mathematics are a giant waste of time. The dry weight of each bike is what it is. And the bikes are what they are. If one must have electric start, the Yamaha is definitely not the bike. If one can't afford the premium price of the KTM, the Yamaha is probably the best choice. Obbsessing over ive or six pounds in either direction is kind of silly. Because the riders skill is almost always the most limiting factor. Nice exercise, though.

You also didn't account for the radiator guards that the YZ didn't have which would make up the extra 2 pounds between the 17 300 and 17 YZ. So they're actually dead on weight wise. Great video. I. Ant wait to ride my 17 300!

i did the same test today on my brand new ktm 300xc 2017, and on my old cr250r 2003, the ktm with tank filled up at 3/4 is 233pounds, and my cr is at 235 pounds (with handguards and side stand added), the cr was 1/2 full of gas photos.app.goo.gl/RtNXxJCIbjawKDeF3
