In regular model trains. Tires are usually applied to increase the pulling power of lighter locomotives. It comes at a cost of reducing the number of contacts for power. Lego does not have to worry about that as the power is supplied by a power supply in the body. So adding tires just makes it easier for what ever locomotive to pull more. The only problems I can see is possibly over torqueing parts and having to replace tires frequently. There probably are other problems but I can't think of them at the moment.

Aside from the power pickups all of this applies to LEGO trains too!

As noted in the video, one problem is increased friction on curves
@NonsenseWars
@NonsenseWars 3 ай бұрын
Yeah, the problem is less noticeable for "regular" model trains because the curves are relatively wider. That being said, you can mitigate it for LEGO trains with wide-radius curves too.

I tried seeing if any one on KZbin has done a UP 9000 steam locomotive build but I can't find anyone that has. So on that note is it possible to build a lego UP 9000 steam. locomotive

Maybe not for R40, but should definitely be doable for wider radii.

Thanks for Detailed video, it was a pleasure to watch. My take on the topic is i went to a store runed by an old dude who knew everything about O-rings and we found an excellent replacement which was a little thicker and more soft tyen the original and it worked great.

Good video as always. I have an angle no one has tackled yet on KZbin; Lego trains on Duplo track. That is to say, purely System vehicles running on Duplo track. Went down this line of thought due to having a younger relative, whose powered duplo train died, and looking at making an alternative via standard Lego.

This is an interesting thought: I think a big consideration would be having it geared low enough to go up Duplo slopes. Even the stock train seems to struggle a bit at times.

@@NonsenseWars 4185 with white rubber band works for the wheels with 32198 as the gear for interacting with the Duplo slopes' "cogwheel" system. Primary issue I had was how to distribute weight so as to avoid flopping over, had to switch to the larger Duplo wheel frame arrangement used by Lego.

I wonder what the results would be if instead of just putting tires on one side, you only put them on one axle or alternated which side they were on? I've never even considered doing such experiments myself as all my locomotives seem to struggle for traction as it is, I countered this by adding a lot of weight to them. Though all of them just use the standard LEGO train boggies, even the steam locomotives, which are actually tender driven.

Meanwhile with 12V LEGO Trains, the rubber rims are essential :) without them, a locomotive just spins its wheels and barely moves Thank you for your video, it’s always interesting seeing how the new stuff compares. Those red silicone drive belts are a great material, I bought some through Bricklink to use in old sets instead of old Technic rubber bands

If you put enough weight on those 12v motors they will probably still run without tires lol That being said the "teeth" on 12v track probably hurts more than helps.

Depends on what it is, but generally speaking yes! Price of course depends on size/complexity but the typical rate is about 30-40 cents per part. DM/email me if you want more info.

Please just use the train motors, I can see that it’s probably more powerful with the normal motors but it just dosent look good
@NonsenseWars
@NonsenseWars 3 ай бұрын
The tires are going to hurt the train motors even more in curves since they are optimized for speed instead of torque. LEGO gets around it by making all of the official trains relatively light.

Constructive criticism here, please add a "to summarize" clip to the end of your videos to explain your data better for all to understand. I really enjoy all your tests but understood nothing you said or how too apply it.
@NonsenseWars

The problem is there isn't a good tl;dr for this one. The tire setup really depends on your specific locomotive implementation. But you are right, I should have at least said that explicitly!
