My cabinets alone cost $20,000 but they were custom. Off the shelf upper cabinets in Southern California are 12” deep! I couldn’t put my dinner plates in them.😬 So I went with 15” deep uppers and a custom whole back wall of cabs, drawers and a small counter as a focal point since that wall is the first thing you see walking into the kitchen…16.5’x10.5 galley kitchen. It’s been a nightmare due to 2 dishonest GCs. Lots of those here sadly. It was a full gut with new electrical and plumbing. Then there’s the floor, lighting, countertop, sink, vent etc. I’m not sure how much it will be but it’s apx $35-$40,000 once it’s all done. Hopefully not much more. There’s always surprises in an old home in earthquake country.🥴

In your opinion what size should a carcass be and in particular the back of the Carcass. Lots of companies are now doing reduced thickness carcasses at the back but thicker sides. I assume this is to save material costs. My old kitchen had 15mm backs

Finding your channel very helpful. It's so difficult to prioritise but should go with installation. I am finding that the first question I am asked when walking into a showroom is What's your budget? and I don't particularly have one or want to set one.

So pleased to hear you're finding the channel helpful and good choice with installation! Budgets can be tricky and some showrooms can definitely come across a bit money focused and pressured when asking for one (which I hate). If my clients don't have a budget then I design and price everything they want, exactly how they want it, then share the price and work from there. It's helpful to have a budget so I can keep an eye on things as I design but not essential in the earlier stages and some clients just prefer to work that way, which I totally understand.

Hi from New Zealand. Thanks so much for this. Really helpful. Appreciate your videos - deserve to have a much bigger audience. To answer your question, my priority for budget is for really functional storage. I am tired of scrabbling around in my kitchen corner cupboard: I want some fabulous storage solutions even if they cost more. One question for you re this: I like the flash storage solutions (pull out pantries, corner storage etc) but I also like the idea of sustainable kitchens - ie re using some older components - as it seems to me that the wood would be better quality than new things and it would stop stuff ending up in the land fill. Is it possible to blend the two? Components of the reclaimed kitchen with soft close drawers and pull out pantries etc? I would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks again :)

Hi! Thanks so much for the nice words and comment. 100% agree, functionality is key! Drawers are better than doors and helpful storage solutions all make day to day use so much easier. Great question: Yes, you can get soft close clip on attachments (if you have compatible door hinges. very easy) or purchase new soft close hinges and swap them. With drawers, you'll likely have to completely replace your runners with soft close versions, but it can be done. There are also various pull outs and mechanisms you can retro fit in existing cabinets (just check sizes and door opening sizes etc...). So if your cabinets are still in good shape, (especially if you're not changing your layout) I think re-using as much as you can is great! Not exactly on topic, but I wrote a post about designing a sustainable kitchen. You might find it helpful (hopefully) : kitchinsider.com/design-and-build-a-sustainable-kitchen/
