Man I gotta say, I have been so impressed in the quality of footage and building you deliver. It's a HUGE deal to build a house AND record the process. Your voice overs are always superb and it's just 10/10 all the way around. Always liking your videos for the algorithm and I can wait to see the rest. Mad respect for being very honest about the pricing.

I don't get why people would be upset he gets free stuff. He's worked hard to build up his KZbin channel and now has the reach that attracts companies. Anyone in his position would be using that as a bargaining chip. It's not like he's misinforming viewers that anybody can build that house for $55k.

Folks feel it's an intellectual mismatch. The content and tone says "I'm an everyman, I'm an amateur, I'm scrappy." But behind the scenes, he's full-time, he's pro, he's well-funded. I'm not saying this about Johnny specifically, but this is the argument for many KZbin channels; there's a betrayal in the brand message. Or, more practically, a person watching it simply might not have access to the tools/materials making it less obtainable/educational.

@@scottperezfox Yup, it comes across as disingenuous. Especially since he was given as a rough estimate watching the video, nearly 50k in materials and supplies on top of having cheap labor from professional builders. This other guy thinks people are jealous and some might be but the complaints in my mind come from people who feel mislead in some way.

@@scottperezfox I don’t know how there’s a betrayal in the brand message he’s laying everything out. Plus if people don’t feel that they have the skills or the know how that’s their fault. He’s not going to hold their hand for every little thing. He even said without the sponsorship it would cost about another $30k. People just need to get over it. Now he probably didn’t need to build such an elaborate patio. I thought with all the materials it was overkill. But you adjust.

Tip for anyone that may want to buy these plans and build from them: You may still need to hire an architect or engineer to go through them to make sure everything is up to code in your specific jurisdiction. Probably still a cost savings. Also, permit fees vary GREATLY across the country, so take the permit fees with a grain of salt. $500 for the building permit is super reasonable. In CA, that would be probably more like $1500. Loved this series Johnny!
@Erik_The_Viking

Here in San Francisco you could pretty much forget it. Everything takes at least 3 years for anything to get done with permits, fees, and of course the NIMBYs. That's before dealing with "inspections", and getting actual work done. This is why roughly 95% of in-law units are "unwarranted" - aka done without permits.

@@craftedworkshop That is his point, you are generating revenue from KZbin and sponsors, yet calling your costs "out of pocket." That is fuzzy math. Any pro knows that prices are greatly reduced on home shows. This does a disservice to the industry when we actually bid jobs without a camera rolling.
