South Louisiana Community College in Morgan City. I looked them up a few years ago and their program was considerable less than most if not all commercial dive schools. A lot of what you're getting in any school is name recognition but all the programs cover the basics to get you started. Just something to think about as you look for a school.

Go somewhere with a good size commercial fishing fleet, find out if they use a local diver, and if no, then set up shop. I make a few hundred a week on the side just tending to a few boats, I can get bigger any time, just take on a larger area. Im on the coast of Maine so thats easy. Cleaning wheel at 50 bucks a pop is super easy money. Check a mooring, 50 bucks...wicked easy...reapairs...a coule hundred. Really couldnt ask for an easier gig.

Here in Spain you can do it for free wiht a fiscal subention, but you have to pass a hard physical probes and a personal interview. They prepare you in welding, hidraulic stuff,and explosive techniqs, all of that with nitrox and maximun 60 meters deep.

Hey Salty, I'm a Canadian millwright apprentice and I've been looking into attending dive school this summer. In the months I've spent researching what kind of equipment to buy, I have to say this video is the single most helpful resource I've found yet. By a long shot. Big thanks! I really wanted to take a look at your shopping cart screenshot on your facebook page, but the resolution is too low and the list is illegible. Any chance you could post a higher resolution pic so I could see the item names and descriptions. Big thanks for all your videos man!

Say salty diver I have a question.Im think about going to commercial diving school to be a underwater welder the question is . Is the money real good and the jobs that’s out at sea how long u would have to stay out ? Weeks or months?
@TheSaltyDiver6 жыл бұрын
The BLS states that the 50th percentile takes home about $25/hr, but you will likely start out as a tender somewhere between $10-$15/hr. I'm three years in, probably a hundred or so dives, do engineering/maintenance/CAD and programming and I cut just over $20/hr. From what I understand, the offshore guys do about 3 months on the rig and then 3 months off. I'm sure someone here can chime in on that.

What was your experience with using the post 9/11 GI Bill for school? How did it help?
@TheSaltyDiver7 жыл бұрын
I actually plan to make a video on this soon, because I know a ton of vets get into this. The gi bill will cover the cost of a trade school UP TO $19,500.00 You're going to have to foot the rest of the bill through student loans. You will probably end up like me and get saddled with some federal and some private. I am still paying off my private loan, which was initially around $4k, and fortunately im still in school for engineering so I wont have to face my federal loans any time soon.
@DK_1787 жыл бұрын
Salty Diver I don't know if this means anything but I just looked at my school financial outline. I start school on January 2nd, 2018. My GI bill is covering about 22k of the overall 34k balance. The rest is grants and then out of pocket for me is about 4k. Which my BAH while at school is supposed to cover.
@TheSaltyDiver7 жыл бұрын
That is super awesome! They must have made some changes to that section of the GI Bill. I am going to look a bit later and see what they changed for this. Out of pocket 4k isn't bad at all. I think my total out of pocket is around $9k. You are going to meet guys at school who have it all in loans. Something you should also know about is the apprenticeship program. www.benefits.va.gov/gibill/onthejob_apprenticeship.asp I think most legit dive companies are offering this now. You basically get a payment every month to receive OJT. It actually draws time from your GI Bill, but if you don't plan on going to get an associates or bachelor's later, its a super nice perk. The BAH while you are in school is super helpful! If you are fresh out of the service, most states will allow you to draw unemployment while you are in dive school as well. So when I was going to school I got my GI Bill, and unemployment. It made living super feasible.
@DK_1787 жыл бұрын
Salty Diver yeah this school has on campus housing so I'll be utilizing that. And yes I am recently out of the service so living in small quarters isn't a huge deal for me. I still have some unanswered questions but I'll be asking the school in these next few weeks to be as prepared as I can be.
