Commercial diving is the next level to scuba diving and is the true way of making good money out of being underwater but it is the hazardous side of diving and it isn’t all that fun. It’s not for the faint-hearted neither you have to be pretty tough and it isn’t an easy industry to get into. There’s also lots you need to know about commercial that you can’t know unless you’ve been in or around the industry. Now I’m not a commercial diver but I have spent a lot of time with them so if there are any commercial boys and girls out there in the comments let us know your wisdom.
So I’m back from holiday and it seems you want to know about things to consider before going into commercial diving.

@@carsonlovrien6649 sorry for the super late reply, but for me yeah it was worth it. I love being a diver, but many/most people don't last in the industry. If you have the drive and desire to do it, it can be a very rewarding career. Becoming a diver is one of the best decisions I've ever made. I had no dive experience before I went.

I worked as a "commercial diver" at an aquarium. It was nothing like this of course, just diving 15-30 foot tanks and cleaning up shark poop all day, but since we were technically commercial divers according to OSHA we had to follow all the same rules so we had to have a standby diver at the surface. The water was so shallow the diver and standby could wave to each other and see it clearly, it was kinda ridiculous.

@@samyakmarchande4796 study and take the asvab, i think you need a 60 to be qualified for navy diving, but its hard work at bootcamp because you will be put in a special forces division. so they will workout more and you will be trained with the seals. i think its the same for a school which is after boot. i know because i went to bootcamp for navy diver and i failed. i am going to be a diver as a civilian instead. Im going to divers intitute in october.

I want to pursue this job. I know its difficult to get in to. I know it's not easy, and its dangerous. I don't have welding skills, nor do I have diving skills. The odds are greatly stacked against me, but that's fine. I am 26 years old and I finally figured out what I want to do in life. If I never get this job but I keep pursuing it in life that's also fine. Knowing what you want but never being able to achieve it is way better then never knowing what you want in life.

There is one in southern England too but as you say there are not many. I was a former adqual mine clearance diver and engineer. But a lot of my shipmates did do commercial diving, working on oil rigs, welding pipelines in the construction industry. And some even went sat diving. Hope it helps.

Went through the Ocean Corporation in Houston Texas, Had a job before I graduated as did several other people in my class.They said only 10 percent would still be in the industry after graduation and found that to be true. If you're claustrophobic , or can't handle the cold,vthis job isn't for you.I lasted 5 yrs and still do the odd jobs every once in a while.still love it and the people I worked with.

I had to give up commercial diving not log after my son was born, he is now at University and I still miss it almost every day. Maybe it's just nostalgia and I'm forgetting the some of the crap civils jobs (working in-shore, canals, rivers, sh!t tanks etc.), or the mind-numbing boredom of some of the off-shore jobs (like on a pipe-laying barge), but I did love commercial diving. It is expensive, especially if you do the saturation course, and it can be really difficult to get a start, but with perseverance, a bit of luck and a willingness to travel anywhere should see you through. I've gone months without a call and had up to 6 calls a day, so swings and roundabouts. Just as a caution - getting your tickets (expensive), and getting a job (can take time and are usually short-term), are only part of the story. Be honest with yourself and make sure that diving is for you, even after paying the course fees, the number of new divers I have seen come out of the water with sheer terror on their faces (never to return to diving), because they were in a position that the dive schools hadn't prepared them for, was frightening. However, if you do like it, in my opinion, it's the most awesome job on the planet.

@@simonluebeck8048 I'm not sure where you are from, but in the UK, when we say zero vis we mean it - absolutely no visibility whatsoever, so that. Using very dangerous tools like the underwater chainsaw (especially when witnessing someone's finger almost removed). Tunnels in reservoirs that are a couple of hundred years old and not very sable. Drill holes in chalk that can barely fit a person through the hole. Coffer dams with way too many obstructions and falling debris. Fast moving tides. Dead body's in the river Themes. The list could go on a lot longer. When I started, there were some grants available for re-training and people that had never worked with tools or even outside thought it looked good on the cover of a magazine and that chicks would love (I may have made the last bit up :) ).

It's true that you have to trust your team topside, however you have to be able to adapt to things on the fly and be able to overcome to get the job done. It's a pretty volatile job and the end goal is to get the job done. It's very competitive in that way because if something comes up and you couldn't complete the job and they send the next diver and he manages it you've just given him favor over you. Also divers have a love hate relationship with engineers. No matter how many schematics and briefs you've seen and been through something always seems to be different once you're underwater. For those who want to be commercial divers the best skills to have as a beginner in the water is to be directionally aware even in zero vis and be able to not drop anything. Oh and try not to get tangled up in your umbilical or get it fouled up.

I am doing salvage diving. Only down to a max of 30m (around here there really isn't water that is deeper than that), so we don't really get saturated which is nice. Here in Germany I got the courses for free because I was doing it in my free time at a catastrophe response unit (Technisches Hilfswerk). With my qualification I can dive for the police and fire department if I decide to throw uni for some reason. I learned things like underwater welding and all that and I am doing a course on blasting right now to learn underwater blasting afterwards. I haven't actually done too much that is more than training, I have searched underwater for a few things to help the police and to find bodies, and I lifted 2 cars and a few lighter things, some of these also out of the water. Oh and I helped with a damm repair after a flood. It's honestly a really fun hobby, but it is good to know that I don't depend on it. And I really love uni right now so that is all great.

Make sure your stamina is olympics level. Can’t waste any work sites time because you’re tired and need to come top side. Each job is different and you’ll usually have a good idea of what needs to be done before you go under.

I too went to Ocean Corp in Houston and did 7 years, North Sea, Persian Gulf, North Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. But had to get out when the construction dried up. Feast or famine, especially getting a phone call at 2 am to be at the dock at 7.

1. It is fun 2. No one gives a damn how well you did in school and don't want to hear your stories from there. Prove your worth on the job. don't be a shitbag 3.Back up diver = stand by diver.. your next in rotation. 4. If your in the US and plan on going offshore plan on being a tender for a few years like 5 or whatever the breakout time is right now and getting tender dives when your allowed. Companies like Chevron , Shell, Boardwalk don't even allow red-hats (under 6 months ) in the water. 5. I worked offshore & inland and shit dives are real. I still remember the smell of that waste tank at a slaughter house and it was 2 years ago. 6. If your in US avoid 30k schools like CDA and DIT unless you plan on immediately trying to go overseas with your DCBC cert..good luck. only benefit was deep water "training" of 165ft . Look at Youngs memorial or other small schools that run like 10k worked with plenty of those guys who spent 10k and I spent 30k .. same jobs.

@@prasanths4105 you need a lot of hours at various depths inlan. as well as surface decompression hours aswell which are very hard to come by. I wouldnt count on being able to get into sat school if thats your main goal. Id make it a secondary goal if the opportunity arises. And yes if you work in the US then theres no point in getting DCBC but if you want to work literally anywhere else in the world you will need the DCBC because its in direct affiliation and is recognized by IMCA who is the governing body of diving in sat diving everwhere in the world other than the US. So being from india you would have to get the certification which is affiliated with IMCA.

Coast Guard, they maintain all offshore work that are navigation safety related and repair and salvage work. You would also get put overseas for humanitarian efforts.

I was an army diver and those navy guys are built different, diving for the military is hard sometimes, especially when it comes to all the pre checks and equipment upkeep, but it is an experience you’ll never regret having. Hope you made it through and are enjoying your dream !

@@iishuffle28 the first phase is always going to be the toughest phase. You don’t sleep much and they expect a lot out of you. Get comfortable in the water fast. And if you’re not good at swimming don’t force your reclass. Swim laps, get your breath hold down longer and practice “clearing” your ears a lot. Because you’ll be asked to constantly swim to the bottom of the pool. The dive sups are kinda hardcore but they do care about your character and it’ll show once you get past the first 3 weeks. All together it’s an extremely hard job. And it’s hard to even pass the training, around 88% of people fail. Hope you do get through and are ready for what you’re about to do! Get smart and get strong! Goodluck

Fort Bovisand in Plymouth used to do the HSE courses, as a Scuba diverse you used to be able to do Basic and Advanced Underwater Explosives courses, turn up on a Friday and your crimping det’s and using Coxe’s bolt gun within an hour, can’t imagine anyone doing that noweredays, Bovisand is luxury flats now or so I understand

Rhian, yes it can be difficult for women to get into (or at least it used to be), but not impossible. There are lots of reasons why this may be the case and it depends on the branch of commercial diving you're trying to get into i.e. Civil (mainly inshore) or oil rigs (offshore), this is an oversimplification but it will do for this. Civil's diving can be really tough, it isn't always from a boat or a pontoon/jetty, sometimes you have to carry all your gear - bailout cylinders, weights, umbilical, tools, parts etc. - up and down inclines, carry them over long distances just to get to the dive site, couple that with 3 hours as standby diver then 3 hours bottom time and God knows how long on the surface doing other jobs. This gets drains even the toughest, fittest person after a week or so. I'm not suggesting that a woman can't do this kind of work, but dive companies have a choice of divers and they are likely to either go with people they know or someone that looks as though they can stand that kind of punishment. Offshore diving can be a little easier (though not always), as everything is usually at hand and you are lowered and lifted from the water by a basket. This is a really really oversimplification. To give a couple of examples that I am aware of (though I don't know either of them personally or worked with them), during the 90's I believe there was a female diver working for a Norwegian company in the North Sea, whose sole purpose in life was to video the main divers progress, now if this is true (and I have no direct knowledge that it is), she was completely useless as every diver has their own camera, I admit that I may be wrong and am doing her a massive disservice. On the other hand, I am aware of a female diver that worked for a UK company who, by all accounts, was a fantastic diver and worked for many years in the industry (I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong), yet another female diver (that I did know personally), completed her course then ended up working at one of the diver training centres in the UK. I also believe that there are women working in the diving industry in the Gulf of Mexico.

Don't do inland diving like I did. The pay is bad, you have to travel alot, your working hours can be random and you have to constantly compete with your coworkers. I quit after 3 years. Working underwater was actually enjoyable, it was everything else that sucked.

My son just turned 17, he did scuba diving for a year and a bit at 14 but stopped because he said it was boring. He did a try out commercial diving in Belgium. He had a smile on his face but I worry…. He could potentially start at 18. I personally find that very young for such a job that does seem to need a certain level of awareness and maturity. As a mother I am there to support en encourage him but on the other hand it is a bit scary. Any thoughts?

If you're in the UK go to a UK school or NYD in Norway, some South African courses aren't even recognised in the UK. As for being bored, I've never got bored of making £600 a day. Out of a course of twelve, three might make a career out of it.

Some oil fields have age limits over 55 years old. Mostly just stay healthy and meet the criteria a doctor requires to pass you as fit for your annual dive medical and you should be ok till your into your 60's. Just remember you will still have to compete against the 20 year olds. Don't worry most young divers arn't that bright and still don't know how to work efficiently in all conditions.

I wish I had seen this 5 min video before I spent 20 grands on bunch of certificates. Even if you graduate top of your class, getting a job is a bit of a catch 22. To get a job you have to be a member of the pile driver's union and to be a part of their union you must have an employer. The only exception is being a veteran, in which case you can get your foot in the door but even then nothing is guaranteed.

Nobody fails the course. You pay you get the papers. After that you need to be related to the OCM or someone in the office to even get a look in. After that it gets even harder....I did it for 20 years and have no regrets, but times were better then in the industry...Stay dry, stay on land, get a proper job, come home to your missus every-night, see your family grow up...
