My husband and I are thinking of moving to Hawaii so I truly appreciated this video. When on vacation we did cook a little at the condo we rented out, but didn't look at the prices as close as we do at home in Florida. The prices of water were high. Nice to see such young people aware of grocery prices...thanks for making and posting the video!

But surely not everything is shipped in - some of the stuff MUST be home grown, and then its just profiteering if they cost the same as the stuff which has been imported.

Trask Stone How do you know... just making up stuff off the top of your head. Tell me what it costs even just to fuel a ship to cross thousands of miles to Hawaii not counting what it takes to just maintain a ship to even be in the water. ..or how much it costs to fly it in.. Of course it's more expensive to move goods to Hawaii compared to the mainland..
@CalifaJohn11 жыл бұрын
I am just offering some comparisons to prices on the mainland. (By the way, You didn't calculate the melon correctly. $1.59 times 5lbs would be around $8, not $11.) Melons are pretty similarly priced in California. Tomatoes here range from $2 to $4 per pound depending on what and when you buy it. We do have the "long onion thing" on the mainland. They are called "leeks." Cabbage ranges $1 to $1.29 per pound in stores, but you can find then at $1 per head at some Farmer's Markets. Many of your canned foods run about double the price we pay on the mainland. Our breads range $2.50 to $5.50 for sliced packaged breads and up to $8 for a hand made artisanal bread. Your juices, soy milk and sodas are about double what we pay.

When I first came here I had family that lived here that I stayed with and I had enough time to look for work when I was here. I just took 3 suitcases and a back pack when I moved here. Finding work was not to hard when I was working, but the bad economy just takes a lot longer for it to effect us. Like right know stores and businesses are closing down and its getting harder to find work but it is still a lot easier to find work if u are willing to put up with the high cost and low wedges.

I stick to the farmer's markets, try and grow it myself and the co-op's. I stay away from packaged foods, that will really drive up your food expense. Being a raw till 4 vegan also helps too.

@woodsrider11710 жыл бұрын
Sack and save is a cheaper version of the same company (foodland) because the shoppers sack what they buy... Both places are way cheaper than Safeway and Times supermarket.. The cheapest would be like Tamuras and the old Daiei store ..forget the name now.. and it's not much cheaper.. This is a decent realistic view of what stuff costs. People go to Costco and Sams as some of the prices are cheaper . It just depends on what...but you have to buy so much more .
