We moved to the big island a year ago. We LOVE the diversity! We LOVE the people and we are treated like Ohana/family! It's simple: you bring Aloha, you get Aloha! Don't come to Hawai'i with that mainland attitude with your nose in the air, not wanting to learn about the history and culture. My wife works for the Hospital in Waimea where I also volunteer. Come here and get INVOLVED with the community! People are chill here and get used to lots of hugs when meeting people for the first time. Shop at Costco, go to the many farmer's markets, or if you have even a small space grow your own produce, if you are REALLY strapped there are honor stands that have farm fresh produce and you can save so much money!

Camara Mackey Not so much. Locals/Hawaiians...well the ones I know and met don't like white people/ the haoles. And since I'm an islander as well there are a lot of things that are similar interest and way of life. It's always great to do you research and make sure you respect their culture and the people because if you don't you in a lot of trouble! And I once WAS friends with someone who disrespected the people because he thought he knew everything about the land, people and culture when he was born and raised in California. Mainlanders don't know really anything about Hawaii. So when you do come to Maui come with an open mind and heart and you'll learn a lot! And you'll love it there! I felt like I was home (in Trinidad a little bit) so it was kind of easy for me to transition! I'm part mermaid as well lol so you will love the water and marine life too! 😊

Your info is pretty accurate. I've been living in Hawaii since the 80s and it's a beautiful island. I'm close to Ala Moana so public transportation is great. There are many buses that will take you all over the Island and I can get on the #5 and in 10 mns. I can leave the hustle and bustle for the peace and beauty of Manoa. The Manoa Falls is also a tourist attraction. I was surprised to learn that people of African ancestry have lived in Hawaii dating back to the 1800s and a few years ago I wrote a book BLACK PIONEERS IN BLUE HAWAII.
@iamaksd7 жыл бұрын
That's nice. So the book is about blacks living in Hawaii during the 1800s and present?
@yvonnemoore11287 жыл бұрын
Yes. It's about Anthony Allen, a former slave who arrived about 1810 & became rich & famous, Judge William Crockett, Helene Hale, mayor, Alice Ball ... it's exciting. I'm having problems with links in w.10 but you can check out the preview on the INT. I got another surprise about Black people in Germany, they have been there for 400 years! www.amazon.com/dp/B00RKM2Z22

Thank you for this video! I would like to move to Honolulu for a year just to experience something different. I'm young and single so why not! I have watched many videos and a lot of them were so negative. So many people move to Hawaii not wanting to live within their means and spending money on things they don't need which causes them to not enjoy their time because they are stuck on wanting to live like they did on the mainland. I'm a very positive person but also realistic. I'm going with an open mind and i hope to enjoy my year there.
@simoneeeoooo8 жыл бұрын
ItsRainingCuteness you have a very positive outlook and that is great! ❤ I think part of the reason why some people have a difficult time when they move to Hawaii is because it wasn't what they expected. Hawai'i is soooo heavily advertised and it can be easy to fall into a trap of thinking that moving to paradise will "solve all your problems." Lol I did A LOT of research before I moved and that helped a little. But Hawai'i is NOT the mainland and it's a learning curve for A LOT of People. And some people can't adjust and learn that Hawai'i is not for them. 💁🏽 lol What was hard for me was being so far from home And starting from scratch to make new friends. It was a very empty feeling being in such a beautiful island and not being able to share it with people or someone that I loved. But I will say that I am soooo beyond grateful for all that I experienced on that island. And I think if possible everyone should move far from home alone or with a friend at least once in their life! I'm excited for you! You will grow so much and experience a lot. Good luck on your journey ❤

Stay at the Polynesian Hostel on Lemon, on Waikiki! I stayed there for 9 days in June. It's in a great location, cheap, near all roads that lead everywhere, lots of nearby attractions, shopping(malls), food. But be warned Waikiki - is extremely touristy! So much so, you will want to get away to the North Shore for a break! the North Shore can be tricky. I could find no affordable Airbnb there. The bus runs along Kamehameha Hwy, but having a car would be better. Things cost a little less there, but not by much. "Forwarded is forearmed!"
@ruthieworldtravels7 жыл бұрын
Staying at a Hostel is roughing it a bit, but it's worth it for the money saved. Mostly young people having fun. They are strict about the quiet time from 10p-6a though. So, take the party to the beach!

What a neat summary coming from a young person. We are from Houston, two daughters in college one here and one in L.A. and a son in 11th grade but after a recent visit to Oahu husband and I are sure that we HAVE to move🍍😍! was concerned about telling my son and turns out he is more ready than we are!!! lol! We are self-employed in the business of WINE and photography we believe we will find or create work to earn our living. The Air condition on the bus was crazy cold but at $5.50/day pass you can't beat it! Before we discovered it, a couple of uber rides for us ranged from $17 to $64 one way around Honolulu and Kailua wasn't even rush hour. Even If students split the fare it would still be expensive. Anyway, you are a strong and charismatic young lady. Best wishes in school, thanks for sharing!

They shouldn’t support Roberts. I use to work as a tour guide at da pier. Roberts and da other big companies would charge twice as much as us or more. They are connected to da ships. Would not tell da visitors of any alternative tour companies . And would tell them not to take any of us that we would not get them back to da ship and back. You got to realize how many people can fit on a bus compared to a 12 passenger van. They make so much more money.

@barbie66953 жыл бұрын
No, don't visit first. Just go and let the chips fall. Going for a visit and back, then back again is quite expensive. If you don't like it....leave, or just deal with it. Sometimes a visit doesn't give the real experience of how it is to live someplace. You'll never know unless you try....actually living there is the real way to see if you like living there. By the way, Hawaiians and the Hawaiian Royal Family used to be Black, Look up the history of the last Black Queen of Hawaii...Circa late 1800's. Also, many other states have areas that are just as expensive as Hawaii.

Unfortunately, there are bullies everywhere in the world now days. Also, If you are coming from the Philippines, you should be fine. Not only are you already an islander, (being from a chain of islands), my suggestion to you would have to be, hang out at first with as many Hawaiian as you can, and don't worry to much. Remember, you are still young and can easily be manipulated, (no I do not mean that in a condescending manner either), I only say this because there are lots of people that will try to advance their personal situations, at YOUR expense, and I don't mean just financially. The locals will take care of you, as long as you respect da Aina. Enjoy the surf, sun and study when you can. You'll love it. Another thing I forgot, was... learn to play the Ukulele if you can. Anthony Pearson native Americans aren’t Indians. Columbus just thought they were Indians because they were looking for India. Native Americans are originally from Asia but crossed over the land bridge and then developed their own features. Indians live in India and are Asian as well. East Asians and south Asians look different but they’re all still Asians. The only group in Asia that aren’t actually Asian by race are Arabs as they’re Caucasian, they’re Asian geographically but no racially.

I had no problems with racism from any locals. All the people I met that were born and raised on the Islands were some of the sweetest people I have ever met. But this is from the view of an African-American lol I have heard that some people their don't like white people though. I had an uber driver (he was white) tell me how he had a really difficult time fitting in and how he dealt with a lot prejudice but he says he fits in now and loves Hawaii.

My Opinions--So far, it's working fabulous. They hate us, we hate them in return. Seems fair.

My Opinions--couldn't really give a shit what you think. Please exercise your right to stay the fuck off my island if you don't like the way we think.
