I recently looked at a home in San Diego (Serra Mesa area close to Mission Valley). The home was built in the '70s' and recently remodeled. It is about 2000 square feet and in a middle class neighborhood with no HOA. The asking price was $975,000. The apartments down the hill in Mission Valley are around $2500 per month for a 2/2 and no garage (on street parking.) I own a home in Central Florida between Orlando and Daytona. It is a 3/2 with a 2-car garage and is valued at $250K. Safe neighborhood, good neighbors, no crime. I pay $660/month. I earn $70K per year. It would take all of my disposable income to live in San Diego because of the cost of housing.

I’m reading these comments and i think this really depends where you’re from, meaning I live in DC and we are expensive here but half the beauty and space. A 760sqft apt (newer construction) runs at least 4500 a month and around 175-250 for 1 parking space. California is an anomaly in the U.S. if you’re a middle-class household earning $100-200K a year, you’re not living above your means if you purchase a $600-700K home in the best areas, meaning San Francisco, LA, or San Diego. This needs to be refreshed. I moved to California last summer randomly and rent prices were inline with the $2300 range in nice walkable beach areas and were readily available. Now, those same places are going for $3000+ and are nearly impossible to find in localities near the beach but outside the cities - within 1 hour drive to LA...My assumption is that all of the LA people are fleeing their cities with their high costs to the more laid back coastal communities now that they are working remotely, and this is causing massive price inflation and shortages. Combine that with rising costs across the board from food and beverage to $6+ gasoline, your money doesn't go very far even on a $100k-$120k salary after half your monthly income goes to paying rent then the other chunk goes to paying for everyday things. You have to be incredibly conscious with your money and budget hard, which can be very difficult to do on the weekends when the sun is shining and people want to go out to restaurants, breweries, etc. Lastly, everything is spaced so far away, you can easily find yourself spending ample time in your car if you live in areas hat are cheaper. Keep in mind also the cost of an Uber, access to LAX can be EXPENSIVE and inconvenient. From my experience, I wouldn't even consider living here unless you make $150k+ single or combined in a couple, MINIMUM. This will provide a very nice life style but you are still priced out of home ownership even at this income. This begs the question - is it worth it? My current conclusion is maybe - it really depends on your individual situation. If home ownership is your dream - do not move to California. Even if you do afford the home, you will likely end up house poor. Perhaps a young ambitious mid 20's to mid 30 year old that gets an opportunity in big tech etc would fair well. These opportunities can spring board you ahead. Tech companies provide insanely good benefits packages - which makes the business case favorable. For me, there's also an element of motivation living in California. Because it is so expensive, everyone ambitious is hustling to try to climb the ladder or make deals. It could become lucrative in the right situation for certain people with the right attitude. There's also amazing year round activities - January and February are amazing mid 60's weather! Lastly lastly, you can always consider the van life approach - many people do it especially down in Ocean Beach and similar hippie / surfer locations. It's probably the easiest place to get away with this lifestyle. Skid Row and basically any street corner, or bridge along the 405 are free to squat as well :-). It's probably the most convenient place to be homeless in America...if homeless can be convenient. Last weekend I road tripped into LA for some city vibes - some of the homeless people living in tents have some pretty nice setups and they are pretty well dressed for homeless people

How are you going to “stay and fight”? You get to vote every so often, but the results are pretty much predetermined. Incumbents of the one party legislature retain their office and continue doing what they have been doing. How do you propose to fight that? As long as politicians keep promising gimmes they will continue to get voted back in. Standing up and shouting “this is unsustainable and has to stop” lands on deaf ears. Too many people are economically clueless, or don’t care, because they are getting their hand out, so screw the rest of us. Last time I looked there was $13-billion deferred maintenance on the water supply infrastructure (think Oroville dam failure, and Shasta is on the brink), but Sacramento budgeted $25-billion for healthcare and benefits for ‘undocumented’ immigrants. And they claim that there is a water shortage so water must be rationed to 50 gallons per person per day. There would not be a water shortage if they fixed the decaying dams and built new ones, instead of virtue signaling by spending the money on these draining social programs. None of the recipients of the hand outs are saying, “wait a minute, we need to fix the water supply, so here, take my hand out money and put it towards that.” If you know how to fight the ingrained self serving shenanigans in Sacramento, then let me know, because I do not see a turn around until it all crashes and burns and there is no choice but to start again from scratch. I do not see any way to fix the current system. It’s a lost cause.

Several decades of policy making has eroded CA’s attraction. The state used to have the best education system in the nation; now it ranks 39th. And try telling someone in the Central Valley or the Inland Empire that their utility bills are low because the climate is so mild that you do not need AC!

One bedroom apartment is $2500.00 on average. It is 30k a year. You have $3100.00 left from your median income, sir.
@jakemoseley18113 жыл бұрын
@@yurybeloded @yury the median income in San Francisco is about $80,000, I think. Sometimes there are two earners in an apartment. In other places in CA people earn less.
@yurybeloded3 жыл бұрын
@@jakemoseley1811 I absolutely agree, but then your tax rate changes. It is not 503 anymore. If there are two earners in the apartment most likely they are a family which on average requires one more room food and and other expences. If two earners are not a family but friends, then they still need one more room, specially if they make 80k. They are not 20 yo anymore.
@jakemoseley18113 жыл бұрын
@@yurybeloded @yury, a person in CA pays above national average income tax only if he has above national average income. And his other taxes given low property tax are not significantly above the national average. CA has high tax only on those who make above national average income. But if you work for Google which has median employee income of $280,000 isn’t your after tax income a lot better than lower taxed employees in Texas? Is that really so bad?
@yurybeloded3 жыл бұрын
@@jakemoseley1811 lets take example that you brought up. 80K a year. (Very decent salary). That is 9.3% state income tax. So after paying for your housing 30K. Your taxes 20-25k. Car insurance and car payment 5-10k all you have left is 15k-20k for your food cell phone, and other small expences. That is if you lucky abd your company pays for your insurance. If not you are finantially screwed.

Thank you for this thorough explanation of why… I do miss my palm trees though. I used to live in Long Beach and Fontana. Yes you should move handsome ☺️ I lived there for 9 months. I decided it wasn’t for me, career wise, financially or the people…. too fast paced for me. I’m more of a homebody.. This was in 2017. I live in Texas now. The prices for rent or apartments or homes didn’t really didn’t scare me, as I am from NJ/NY and you know how expensive that is. I have better quality of life down here. I bought a one way ticket and never looked back my dreams of owning a home are more realistic and doable now. I’m looking for my dream home. No family and I’m single so I’m looking for a simple home under 300k. I considered Arizona, or Nevada but the heat and the thought of running my AC all year round. No thank you lol. I like to save, lol

Just wanted to mention you that I'm from Gloucester Massachusetts but is an area in which you would need to have three people rent out a three bedroom house just to be able to afford it. I know live in Arizona, I'm a young single mom and can afford a house by myself. That is unheard of where I'm from. So yes, Arizona does get really freaking hot in the summers. But I like the fact that pretty much going to the pool year round, with the exclusion of 2 months in the winter maybe. So although Arizona may be hot at times, sure beats the natural disasters in several of the other states. We do not have tornadoes, hurricanes, or earthquakes or excessive lightning. All that we have is the occasional wildfire, but those are most common around the Mount lemmon area which is a big mountain that we have. And we also have the occasional dust storm which are more common in farmland areas. I do hope that you find that perfect place but so far this is the best that I've been able to find. Good luck in your future search.

You forgot to say about property taxes. How are taxes California on your million dollar house? Not everything is about rent. In Texas a property tax is up to 3%. A house in Round Rock for $250, I don't think so, maybe a condo. A house is more like $400k now. 3% is 12k per year. That's a good 5 months of rent in California. Put that in contrast with the state tax. Kind of the same except you live in a better house with 300/mo electricity bill

This is so unscientific. You’re cherry picking the most expensive cities. Then you’re using the average rent as if everyone will pay that average. Then you’re using the word “everyone” all the time. Then you’re comparing CA rent in the three big CA cities to the average US rent that of course includes TONS of cheap housing in podunk areas or slums where almost nobody watching this video would ever live.
