lol. About 20 years ago my buddy moved into a new house with a big L shaped back yard. We made a par 4 in his yard. There was a pine tree at the bottom of the L shape blocking the direct shot to the green that we made. Therefore we had to lay up then hit the second shot to the green. Everything pitching wedge. lol. The green was only 5ft by 5ft. We made the green by lowering the blades on the lawn mower to their lowest point. We then dug a hole and put a plastic drinking cup in it. We spent plenty of afternoons drinking and playing a faux round of golf. Even betting. lol. Total cost to build was zero dollars. Total fun was tremendous! Enjoy your better version. We had tons of fun with ours.

Bottom line: if you don’t have a ton of property and money then live vicariously through Spud Run Golf and if you have to have a green get a synthetic for about $10,000 and have little to no maintenance for 10 years. This is from somebody who is speaking from experience. I’ve tried to grow a green for 2 years now and there is ALWAYS something going wrong. Herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, fertilizer, drought, mower maintenance, etc etc etc. and that’s AFTER you do all the work of installing the green. I keep doing it because I actually enjoy doing the work but most people think I’m crazy…..including my wife. Great content as always, keep making the videos!

One of my many jobs was a golf course mechanic. there I got to understand how astoundingly complex turf-management is in this capacity. they cut down the greens to 3/16 and 5/32! and it's flat as a board. try getting that on your lawn at home, you can't. it takes massive work to build the green and maintain it with specialized mowers to achieve that level. I always had to ride out and adjust those greens mowers so they would be accurate if they left lines on the grass. then you have all of the chemical and feed treatments, it's not for everyone and it's not as easy as some might imagine, no way. it will be very expensive but awesome to do. 🏁

I was thinking gosh, that's a lot of money...and now I feel like I got a great deal! OK it's not my own personal property, but I can drop in and out as I please. Though tbh to build your own hole in South East England you'd have to be a millionaire by default as you wouldn't be able to afford a property with any land without shelling out millions. So I guess in England if you have the land you can probably afford the work.

Oh you also forgot something lining the green with special geofabric, around the sides if you don't you get a wicking affect where the clay soil pulls the moisture out of the root zone, ending up with dry soil and turf issues in the front like you have. If the green falls from front to back, or like any real green falling to any side you should add a smile drain because moisture can build up especially with the geofabric. The smile drain runs along the edge of the front of the green like 6 to 12 inches from the edge, hence giving a smile affect, it catches any water the drainage misses

If you lived in a different location, sure Fescue would make sense but not in Ohio where if also gets hot AF and droughts are common. It's your hole and you can do whatever you want but with newer technology and better cultivars we aim to save water and use the best grass that fits the needs of the course or your hole in this situation. Good luck with the Fescue but cutting it short brings in all kinds of factors once it matures and gets some age and I believe other grasses would of been a far better choice with less needed to be put into it

i'd love t see you do some tests using biochar on your property... after aeration, maybe do me some tests?...... not necessarily suggesting you go take your green and start messing with it, but maybe other areas you could see if biochar can grab some nutrients and support soil life....like functional sand in the sense that you have structure that absorbs things, but doesn't add organic matter per say..... for better root zone health and drainage.

@@SpudRunGolf take a quick look....there's something to it, I am sure.... it's pretty much ignored by the entire golf industry. I am making coffee grounds biochar as we speak and suspect it is perfect for golf course and turf applications..... it;s a little more complicated than just making some charcoal..... when made, screened, washed, and charged correctly it is like functional sand, as it's porous, structural carbon, not solid silicates. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oXy2ppyqarWdp9E

@@SpudRunGolf If you get more curious, give a shout...... few thoughts looks like the research suggest size .5-1 mm particles is best.....basically what coffee grounds gives you after screening the fine stuff out.... making a small pyrolizer for grounds is much easier than concocting a larger char maker for wood and the like...... making hardwood/softwood char is dirty stuff, horrible really by the time you get it crushed and screened (like mask with hankerchief over it and you are still blowing black from your nose)..... but not with coffee biochar....... so that's really my interest because of abundance of raw material locally, size of carbon particle end product (and structural properties of coffee char, say, like is different than straw char, obviously), and screening coffee char is much less dusty....... All char reaally should be washed before charging and use.... there is residual volatiles and real fine dust that comes out, and aint good...... helps keeps potassium from possible getting jack up too. perfect for part of sand mix for top dressing after aeration.....functional at a 5% level in your sand mix...... nutrient capture, soil biome health enabler, has drainage but water retention properties .. that is, it holds some water, but doesn;t get soaked like a clay, water keeps moving through it, thus it's use in filters with its ability to filter stuff out yet stay functional.... kinda like functional sand. Sort of why I went for the pasture golf/links style when putting together my own course, like the old timers used to make. The land is unaltered other than regular mowing, and the greens have a bit of sand and the occasional rolling, but that's it. A lot of old-time greens were actually "browns" being just dirt or sand patches, so it's something to consider if you want to ease the complexity and maintenance side of things. It's a bit more rough and ready than the finely manicured complexes we have today, but it serves. Add some hickory clubs, and it's like stepping back in time. If you have a green spot, you can have a course of some kind. I've seen people with very limited space make chippng courses on their lawns or use limited flight balls to drive then regular ones to putt out.

Building it is easy, maintaining it is a different story!! Funny story about my bent grass, I ended up having to order it from Jersey, when it showed up, it was labeled as from Oregon, Funny part is, I live in Oregon...😆

I agree with your first sentence. You live in the seed capital, haha

if you could afford to make a second green by your first teebox,, and another teebox by yout current green ,then you could play the hole backwards as well giving you many options with more teeboxes ,,,plus you dont have to walk all the way back to play the hole again

Built a 60’x20’ green. 007 bentgrass seed $100, load of 50%topsoil 50%sand $300, toro greens master $900. Total of $1300. Not too bad. Was lucky to have a spot on a slope with good drainage.

Good on you. How does the ball react when you hit it on from 150? Thanks for commenting, it helps us grow!

@@SpudRunGolf seems pretty similar to my local course. Usually runs out 10 feet.

Absolutely awesome!!!! I love that Spud Run is in Ohio. O....H...!! Jealous as hell! I'm in Southern Ohio myself and think this is 10 X better than any rental home, Harley, bass boat, snow mobile etc. I can't believe I haven't heard of this project before now. So impressive!!! Hats off to Spud Run!! You'd be the best neighbor possible. 😁

I did a 70% sand/30% peat moss mix for my mini backyard green. It doesn’t look nearly as dark as yours! Should be worried? I didn’t know there’s company’s that sell Pre-mix. Are you aware of any in Michigan?
@SpudRunGolf3 жыл бұрын
We got it delivered from Arms Trucking. You can look them up online. They are in Nothern Ohio I believe. They deliver all over the place. If that doesn’t work I’d talk to a local superintendent and they will have a connection.
