We were in Normandy in May. The campsites were average €14 a night. They jumped starting June!

I've never bothered with a cabin on overnight sailings to Normandy tbh. My routine is: wee drinkie in the bar: then some grub: then a couple more hours in the bar. By that point most others have mooched off to bed and it's easy enough to find a seat somewhere quiet where I can get a surprisingly good kip. As long as I allow enough time for breakfast in the morning before we dock I find that the excitement of being on holiday negates any residual tiredness. Can't comment on the campsite costings of course as we always wild camped - with varying degrees of comfort and success admittedly. Anyway, good video. I like this sort of thing as I've been caught out so many times by all the little (and not so little) costs that I'd not considered.

Just thought of another tip. If it rains during your trip and the bike gets caked in grime then why not treat it to a packet of 100 wet wipes. How much smoother a bike goes once it's sparkling clean.

Haha, solid advice!

We were cycle touring, in Brittany, last June and again this June, campsites and hotels were noticeably more expensive this year. I guess inflation has affected France just as much as the UK, still an amazing cycling destination and not as expensive as a similar trip in the UK.

Very interesting. As regards your drive to the ferry and parking, depending where you start from you could consider cycling to say Plymouth on the first day, no car involved, catch the evening sailing, then set off in France the next morning. To make it interesting you could return by another ferry port such as Southampton then spend two or three days riding back home through Hampshire etc. So far all my rides have been in the UK and I have not ridden in France. My preference is hotels such as Travelodge, not camping, because it means I can carry a lot less kit and am guaranteed a decent shower and bed every night. I book the UK hotels in advance, start from home with say 60 miles between each destination. Once that is done the only other costs are incidentals on the road (mainly food). You may say why start from home when there are so many great spots further away but you don't need to go far from home to be in new and undiscovered areas of this wonderful country we live in. After the first few miles you are in the middle of nowhere and the adventure really begins! My first ride was seven days return to the Isle of Wight which was amazing and a total assault on the senses, the total cost of which for six hotels was about £320. The next ride was three days circular around Dartmoor for which two hotels cost me about £130. My next ride is to be five days circular around London through the home counties. This is a bit different because I am driving up there with the bike in the car, parking, unloading the bike then hopefully getting back to the car five days later and driving home. Four hotels cost £220. All these rides have one thing in common, they are 100% absorbing, you are right there in the action for the full duration and you see and experience things you never expected or even knew existed. Plus I seem to meet so many fab people on the way round, they all they love talking to cyclists. Please continue making making your wonderful videos.

Thanks so so much for sharing all this, it's really helpful and just plain interesting :-D I have considered cycling from home to Plymouth for the ferry but just that section for me would be hillier than the entire tour in Brittany and I can never quite bring myself to start that way. Cycling home from a Hampshire ferry is a good idea too but again it's a mindset shift I need I think. I know that stretch of land so well having grown up in the New Forest and lived many years in Devon that I think I'd be impatient for it to be over. Ironic given the quite relaxing nature of riding. So I should just get over the mental obstacles really. Totally agree about not having to go far. I've also done a loop of Dartmoor over two days even though I live there and loved it so much. I should do it again really as it's such a great route. Enjoy your home counties adventure!

The five day cycle around London was epic, at least 80% was on canals or former railway lines. The route was 260 miles and should be on every cyclist's bucket list. Best ride I've ever done - would do it again and not change a thing.

So about $1500 Canadian. From this side of the pond that isn’t unreasonable and to be there during D-Day week. The Italian campaign is more personal to me because my dad and 2 of his brothers were involved. Story has it all those in the Italian campaign were labeled D-Day Dodgers by the lovely lady Astor. Love the song that was written about those D-Day Dodgers. Brings tears to my eyes. Your campsites are a little more but your hotels are way cheaper than Canada. Sorry about the rambling. 👍🚲

I'm always here for the rambling, keep it coming! Interesting to see how it compares to Canada.

Sounds like not a lot in it between the camping price and the camp hut price? Almost worth not taking the tent gear to save weight?

I'd agree in Brittany, unfortunately those camping cabins aren't anywhere near as prolific in Normandy, but I think they're spreading pretty quickly so hopefully more and more campsites will have them. Would be great to skip the tent entirely.
