I think it would be interesting to compare prices of everyday things, from basic necessities to luxury items, in Turkey to the US. Maybe collab with a friend/family member here to collect the information on the same day as you do. When anyone from my husband’s family goes to visit Turkey, they load a luggage with things that are cheaper here in the US and bring back things that are hard for them to find here or are cheaper in Turkey. Usually lots of snacks come back 😂

Plant based milks should be the default - one day they will, I know 100%. My friends in the US and Belgium are also complaining because prices went up there as well. Then I ask ‘did they go up 60-120% like in Turkey?’ They then stop complaining 😫

I thought that Starbucks prices are about the same around the world. Now that menu can be used good in China with RMB. But one lira is 0.43 RMB. That is in Turkey it is twice cheaper than in China (which is a low tax country).

Actually its cheaper now. In 2015, 1 Dollar were equal to 2.75 lira. Paying 9 lira meaning that you paid 3.27 Dollars. Now same drink costs less. If it was still 3.27 Dollars, you would have to pay 48.75 TL. So they discounted same drink 50 percent off. The reason people are getting poorer everyday. The economy is bad globally but its obvious, Turkey has chosen the path of being China of Europe. And it seems to me that western countries want that too. They want to be less dependent on China so Turkey is one of the good candidate for cheap labor and service. A decade of suffering waiting for us. It's not gonna be easy.

Starbucks is always relatively expensive in Turkey no matter the year.. here the issue is : people are not earning more than they used to in 2015, yet they are paying everything 2 or 3 times more than they used to pay. a.k.a. when your currency loses value, you pay more for a product which has been 3 $ since 2015. a.k.a you could buy an i-phone with your monthly salary of 4000 ₺ in 2015, now you have to work at least 3 months to be able to buy an i-phone which costs at least 15.000₺; i-phone's $ price hasn't changed much over the years, your currency lost value.

@@AL-grhvc electronics are unaffordable at this point, that’s for sure. but i think starbucks is slightly more affordable in 2022, though still expensive. using dollars for comparison may not be always right, but i think also considering the inflation of dollars, 25 lira does not compare with the 9 lira of its time. starbucks has probably gone for a more affordable price trying to stay in the market. that probably means they may be lowering their prices by lowering the quality of their products. i think it is harder to find quality and healthy food and beverages at this point
@AL-grhvc

@@mete8384 the point here is that an average American has been paying 3$ for a venti since 2015, yet it has got 3 times more expensive for a Turk.
@bahadrozcan9151
@bahadrozcan9151 2 жыл бұрын
@Mete When you pay with 1/4 of your income just for the electric/natural gas bill and then, 1/2 goes for apartment rent, there will be nothing enough left to cover the price of a coffee - which also by normally overpriced, that multiplied by x3. In America, basic needs have not become overly expensive yet, like we got here in Turkey. If they'd calculated their prices without considering household income and expenditures of the potential consumer profile, it wouldn't work. Economics and Trade isn't about numbers and maths. It's a social science and concerning things can not assessed with shallow knowledge and thinking; that's where you are missing.

Interesting video, thank you. Have to say though, IMO Starbucks is unethical. They are greenwashing like hell. They advertise their good work conditions and fair trade. But there are multiple controversies including child labor and human rights issues, violation of Fairtrade agreements etc. It goes on with tax avoidance, union busting and not to mention the huge amount of plastic packaging and paper cups with plastic caps. Please let’s all support our local dealers and independent small shops instead of a huge chain that has just a good marketing department. 💚

Foreigners living in Turkey earn lira just like everyone else. As I did in the video it’s uncomfortable for most foreigners these days because people assume we’re all rich, but in fact most of us have loans/bills to pay to our native countries in foreigner currency…so it’s actually more difficult for a foreigner to live here. I pay my student loans in dollars but I’m only earning lira.
