I am a 27-year-old guy currently working in Mumbai as a medical billing specialist for US healthcare. I earn around 50,000 rupees a month and live with my family of five. In contrast, my counterparts in the US earn 10 to 15 times more than me, even though they work fewer hours. In India, we work for minimal pay with very little work-life balance. It's extremely challenging and exhausting to survive here. I've had to put my dreams on hold just to make ends meet for my family.

A few points. In western countries there’s usually not a single income dependency as there is in India. I live in the uk and my husband and I work full time to maintain a good standard of living. Also, the cost of living is higher and taxation is generally higher (depending on state in the US and virtually anywhere in Europe). When I was working for a firm with an office in india, I was a bit envious that although they got lower wages, they had drivers and domestic help. Even as a senior manager and in a dual income household I couldn’t afford luxuries like that. I have to work 9-5 and then make food for the family and do domestic chores with help from my husband. It isn’t equatable.

I'm an (east) Asian American who used to work for an India-based company several years ago. I knew that my counterparts in India were paid less, but I didn't realize it's probably like a 10:1 ratio. A local in Jaipur was kind enough to negotiate a tuktuk driver to be my personal driver for the day and the price was 900 rupees (around $13). The driver later invited me for dinner at his home, which was a small 3-room concrete structure that he shared with his wife and 7 children. No air conditioning despite being over 100 degrees F at night. It was so humbling/beautiful/sad all at the same time that he would open his home to me, a complete stranger, despite having basically nothing. Neither he, nor any of his family, ever attended school, and all were basically illiterate. I wish I could say his situation was an outlier, but from what I can tell, the vast majority of people I saw on the street appeared to be struggling. We take so much for granted here in the West!

Same here.A young lady without any physical disability came to beg with her children and my mother asked her if she could carry a baggage and she will pay her a good amount.She completely denied.I mean she can bring those children for begging but doing hardwork to feed them is not acceptable to her.Although it's inappropriate to expect elders and people with disabilities to work but young able ones can easily earn a bread by working instead of begging.

Young guy with no kids: you need at least 1 lakh to live without worrying in Mumbai. Banker Uncle (with 2 kids and a wife): you need a minimum of 20,000 to live in mumbai. Well, it's more related to how you can comfortably live and without making any non-useful expenses like partying, shopping, going out to expensive restaurants. If you can live a life with simple habits, you don't need a lakh to live but even if you earn less, it works fine!

The number ( in USD) will tell you nothing. You have to consider the cost of living (rent, food, energy, health care, transportation, school fees, university) if you want to compare the income with other areas, countries. Some places are really terrible expensive.

In tier 2 cities in India, I think ₹50,000 - ₹60,000 (600$ - 720$) per month is in the comfortable range for a family of 3 or 4. In tier 1 cities like Mumbai, it should be ₹70,000 - ₹80,000 (842$ - 962$) per month. Anything less than that and it's difficult to make much savings. Edit: Provided one owns a house.

The quality of life in tier 2 cities is much better but the government has zero focus towards developing them to reduce the burden on metros. In India a lot of people are underpaid ( the less skilled once) and lot of them are overpaid( highly skilled once), definitely there is skill shortage and if a company wants to keep highly skilled people, they need to be paid based on international standards and therefore the focus should be in getting people to learn high income skills then only this income disparity will reduce. Because the demand and supply thing works on services too therefore highly skilled people keeps getting a raise whereas the less skilled once get less money. Money will be just distributed in a different pattern overall money will be the same.

Working class people tend to live by with modest income. Though they do not brag, but at least they have more than enough to survive the bustling streets of the city. As a person now living in the city, I constantly have to deal with chaotic scenarios concerning highways and pedestrians and how to differentiate them accordingly to avoid any confusiom while crossing the street. If you happen to be spending (and saving) wisely, chances are, you'll go far ahead in your career and just life in general. As for the people who are beyond working class, they spoil themselves with too much extravagance to the point where they're no longer able to differentiate if they're already spending too much or saving too little in a financial sense.
