@@Firefist0123 ya.....spikes don't make this much of a difference. Not even close. They can actually fatigue your legs more if you aren't used to running in them.

The spikes definitely help improve your performance. However, it should be noted that Nick is a former Olympian so he has genetic talent and a highly capable aerobic system, so he was able to shave his time down very quickly in a matter of weeks. Going from a 5:40 to a 5:15 could take a hardworking runner many months to accomplish. The spikes make your feel faster and lighter so that will help you run a few seconds faster maybe -- not 25. All around great job to Nick!

Spikes 100% help more then a few seconds on a track. Trainers he ran in weren't designed for racing so they are slowing him down with all the extra weight. You also conserve more energy on the turn with spikes due to the spikes. I'd say trainers vs a proper pair of spikes could make 10-15s faster depending the on person.
@VicioRay

I second the notion that the drop in weight from the trainers he wore has the most to do with it. At paces that slow, traction with the metal pins isn't much of a factor.

This is wild. I am now 66 and at this age there is no way I'm combining any deadlifting with running back to back. Even in high school, when I ran barely sub :50 for 400 (actually it was 440 yards in those days) and barely sub 2:00 for the 880 and could deadlift 450 I would not have tried to do those back to back. In fact I only know I could deadlift 450 because I hated lifting so much I asked my coach what I could do to get out of lifting in PE. He said break a school record. Since I was a ski racer too I figured my best shot would be either squat or deadlift and I chose deadlift for some reason. I did it once and never picked up free weights again. Massive respect, Nick. Of course you are an Olympian and I was just an uncoachable kid with a little natural ability. I'm 6' and 180 pounds today and was 10-15 pounds lighter then. I still like to sprint once a week or so and try to be careful not to hurt myself in the process. I'm really slow now but I think my form is still pretty solid. No goals other than to enjoy the fact that I can still do it.

They make your feet and legs stronger which allows you to run faster. That comes with training in the spikes. Also spikes are light weight and provide more traction on the track which allows you to run faster. They make a huge difference.

A mile is a mile regardless of the lane, but there are some differences. The curb is not so tough on lane 8 tho, so it should be easier on lane 8 as you don't slow down as much as on lane 1. But you don't see anyone racing the mile in 8th lane :)

@hope_in_christ_alone
@hope_in_christ_alone Жыл бұрын
I mean 6 isn’t shabby!😊 I’d just suggest doing a long distance run on the weekends during the season (6 days of training per week) Also recovery is rlly important because you can run higher quality workouts if your muscles feel good!! (So foam roll, stretch, and ice if needed!😊) Otherwise, try coming up with mental visualizations/games for races. (Like for my mile I think: “pace out the first one, second lap: catch someone, and then think of the last two laps as an “all out 800”) although you won’t have a lot of gas left lol😊 hope that helped!

Hey, you can definitely do it. Tips I have are probably 1. Up your weekly mileage, you wanna be doing lots of easy miles and probably get up to like 40 miles a week. 2. You wanna make sure that those easy/ long runs actually feel easy- you shouldn’t feel out of breath and should be able to talk with someone 3. Get enough sleep, enough water , and enough calories in. 4. Don’t forget speed work 5. Get fitted for some running shoes that match your running style it’ll really help

Hello, I have a question as an inexperienced individual to a professional. Starting this year, I plan to study sports education and I still need a pair of shoes: 1. for the sports aptitude test (100m sprint and 3000m run) and 2. afterwards for the track and field semester. I'm still undecided whether to buy spikes (I'm leaning towards the "Puma Evospeed Distance Nitro Elite+ 2" or the "Puma evoSPEED Star 8") or to stick with regular running shoes and use my indoor shoes for the sprint. I would greatly appreciate a response.

Great challenge. For overall wellness and athleticism, I'd opt for you as a runner - lighter, faster, V02 max. Lifting heavy is not as important as strength to weight ratio, IMO. Y ou really want to get in shape, do what you do best. Train for the 800 and go after some masters track titles and records. You're almost M40. If you could get down to 1:55, you could compete and possibly win at the World Masters level at age 40. How's that for a challenge? I know you're thinking, 'been there, done that' but it's a whole different thing post 40. I never ran an 800m race in my life til I was age 61, ran 2:18. Ran 56.23 400 same yr.

I run track as a distance guy too I think you should talk with your coaches first and see what they think because usually winter is a good set up for outdoor but yea really just stay healthy, keep up with your runs, and keep up with your target mileage for each week. Like the times you run now can be disappointing trust me I know that a lot but really if you stay consistent you’ll be way faster than you are now when you run your outdoor championship races!!

If it was anyone but Nick I would question training a 10k to lower your mile but I'm not about to question an Olympian on their training lol. I think you have the deadlift + mile in the bag but if there are any struggles increasing the max dead lift or being able to double 500lbs but only do it once would make that run about 5x easier not being a a max lift.
