Totally confusing interview. What’s the main message? I only hear “I don’t know” / “not enough data”. I think the doctor has a lot of knowledge but the interviewers needs to probe correctly, summarise his answers. Not everyone is interview friendly but should be hand holded to get more clearer take away’s.

I do love the TR podcasts and also this format has had some very interesting insights, however for these long form discussions imo it would be great to have more than one interviewer or maybe change the format to be more engaging. There is no real discussion, it's just questions and answers and no real take aways. The question was "How much food do cyclists need?" and I don't think I know a better answer to this after watching this than before other than, too little food = bad

Thank you for bringing that up. It's very interesting to hear your thoughts and point of view, and I'll consider that for a following podcast. Having said this, also, must say that rather than addressing the question 'how much cyclists need to eat' (despite the title of the podcast), with concrete examples it was more of a discussion around the topic of energy balance and energy availability. There is no one-size fits all for nutritional recommendations and they vary on a day-by-day, meal-by-meal basis, but we highlighted that they can vary as much as 3 to 12 g/kg/day of carbohydrates depending on the training/competition load.

@@joselareta Dear Dr Areta, first of all let me thank you for getting back to my feedback in such a detailed and open way, definetely not taking that for granted, especially as my feedback might not have been written in the most constructive way. I also want to apologize if my feedback made it sound like this interview did not contain a lot of wisdom and insights. It certainly did, I still enjoyed the discussion a lot and your insights on these topics are very interesting and I also understand your hesitation as a scientist to make bold statements which are not applicable everywhere and might not have enough data (yet) to support them. That being said, there are some things which you touched on in this discussion which I would have loved seeing some follow up questions to from the interviewer. For example, you mentioned multiple times that some people have a reluctance (I think you even mentioned phobia) to consume a huge amount of carbs. As an ambitious amateur cyclist in his 40ies, who is very much interested in improving performance but also ultimately in staying fit and healthy, this is something that sparked my interest especially when it comes to topics such as carbhohydrate timing and insulin response/sensitivity in regards to a high carb diet. Even on a high training day I tend to undereat carbs for this reason as it just feels wrong to consume >400g of carbs a day (in your example it could be even double that) on a regular basis during a training block. In relation to that it would also have been interesting to talk about different types of carbs, ie. ingesting pure sugar gels for regular training vs fruits and other higher fiber/slower digesting carbs, Pre/Post workout nutrition and macros and stuff like that. I understand that this probably wasn't the focus of the discussion, I just feel having someone with your knowledge on the topic dedicated your valuable time to this interview, it would have been great to get more specific answers to those types of questions. In any case, thank you a lot for your time and dedication to this topic, I will watch out for publications from you in the future.

One question I think wasn’t answered is how often underfuelling happens before the various side effects kick in. I assume it has to be fairly chronic. Hopefully bonking once doesn’t mean my bones will fritter away 😅

If you're new, you'll have to eat more because your not used to it and you won't know how to slow down, especially on hills! If you're a pro, a 3hr ride at 20mph is your 'easy' or zone 2 ride and you probably won't need to eat anything (during the ride). It also depends whether you have weight to lose or if you can afford to eat a bit more, that is goal dependent. Also are you training for flat TT's or long hilly races/sportives? Very different diets.

Wouldn't weight loss be a sign of REDS? I don't believe it is physically possible to have a energy deficiency without weight-loss, unless you also periodize energy excess.
