I would hope that it'll be cheaper over the next 8 years. If it's at like 80 grand after 16 years then it's not completely terrible. Still a ton of money though, I think you'd be hard pressed to spend more on maintaining a Jag or Maserati of a similar age. I wonder if an E55 would be cheaper.

If Kennan is so passionate about the M5, then it is money well spent. I've owned my BMW i3 for 5 years now and all I've spent on that is for a new Airbag sensor which needed replacing and screen wash. The car is still on its original brakes at 80,000km. Apparently, me owning an EV makes me a non-car enthusiast but I love the reliability and lack of maintenance. That and I am tight and BMW maintenance costs scare the shite out of me.
@trizzuth345 ай бұрын
@ewadge just you wait until you have an issue with the parking brake light and BMW's only solution is a $5000 full replacement of the entire ABS unit, all lines and both rear parking brake actuators. Just happened to a buddy of mine and he was able, after EONS of research, of which none is on the internet, figure it out and fix it on his own and save himself 5K. Then there's also the ever looming AC issue that cools the car AND the battery that is multiple thousands when that goes and it will. Then there's the carbon fiber reinforced plastic monocoque that will immediately total the car with any small fender bender, or and the proprietary skinny tires only made by Bridgestone any longer, have to gobble up as many as you can before they are no longer made. Yeah, despite all of these maintenance costs E39M5 FTW over an i3, in fact any E39 over the i3 ALL DAY LONG BABY.

Really depends on what you do upfront when you buy and the original condition when you bought it. E46 325s are gonna be more clapped out in general, not even the most desirable non m e46. My uncle in law has a e46 330ci and has only done scheduled maintenance since new and it’s still perfect. Deferred maintenance can wreak havoc on them, and if you’re not doing the labor yourself, a rough example can break you. Still not as expensive as a cheap Mercedes.

That’s exactly the approach I am talking with my old 2005 VW Golf. Please bear in mind that I live in Poland and service prices are much lower here (not necessarily parts). Anyway I bought my car for around 4000$ and in the last 17 months I own it spent somewhere around 2000$ for regular service and repair. On top of that another 2000$ to repair some minor collision damage but that came from insurance of nice lady that decided to turn right straight after she heard a command from her sat nav. By the way your BMW service is at the level of service done to metro buses in the company I work for (with that exemption that bus service is rather reactive than proactive). So when somebody buys used bus from us they literally bring them pallet on the forklift with service records.

I absolutely love your car. My husband and I were going to buy one new, years ago. We now have an E30 vert and an E30 coupe. Love the wheels on your car.

Good for you, Kennan. Don't let the hate in the comments deter you from owning and enjoying something you clearly love.

That poor paint match would drive me insane. I don’t know how he hasn’t went for a full respray yet.

Kennan - you clearly love this car. The work is just the cost of ownership. I hope you never have to have another expensive year. Shame to see that accident. It looks like you have put as much in work into the car as another one would cost. I face the same issue in that the 996 is so inexpensive that every time something needs done the question of finding another one versus keeping this one crops up.

True fans of Kennan will remember his first videos and the support he got from us. Glad to see him confident today

What, when did you get an E39?

As insane as it is to see these maintenance bills, I love seeing someone else so enamored by a car even after so many years and pain of ownership.

I had a 00 540i manual and it had a service repair record book identical to yours. I was told once that keeping service records is good but when you have a service record log approaching the size of NYC yellow pages, that is not a good sign and you should avoid that car!

I had a 2002 e39 530 sport with manual transmission. Best car I ever had. I sure miss it. So perfect. It’s not an M5, for both bad and good.

Really Wholesome how much you enjoy your car, and that's the most important thing after all and great to see, how much you care about keeping it as close to new as possible

Very cool ,and wow you don’t cut corners Ken. I’ve owned many M cars but never an e39 M5. My favorite is also anther V8 manual M car- the e92 M3.

I’m happy he’s making a video about the M5, it’s a much better overview than another KZbinrs 911 That they gush over after owning it for six months and will flip it in another six months

I knew it even before it came up in the video, as I myself had to spend about a month and a half with the car down last august, as I too found bits of plastic U guide clips in my oil pickup screen. I dove in and did all of the work myself using the BMW TIS i had to rent, M5board and youtube videos as a guide. BMW dealer quoted me $16,000 for that job and NEVER would have replaced all of the "while you're in there" things I did like 4 new CPS sensors, coils, water pump all new cooling system internal tensioners, all chains and guides and gaskets, retimed the engine with vanos was a fun part! Starting the car was a nervewracking experience as I had a loud hydraulic lifter immediately after and thought I had messed something up. About 4000 miles on the car since that job and she runs like a top!

Do you run Amsoil in it since you take such good care of it? Just curious if you also run the best oil

What was the original purchase price? Need to add that to the repair total to truly show the cost per mile.

I sincerely thought it would cost more to own/maintain one of these. Iv yearned for one for a long time, though they aren’t on my immediate radar, this video was helpful and informative on a real ownership experience 😌 thanks Ken
