Energy required to counteract air resistance is a cube relation: So 70^3 / 50^3 =2.74. Kennan was using like 3x the energy to go that extra 20mph faster.
@maxtp9485 ай бұрын
Not quite. This only applies for the air resistance part of the total resistance. Rolling resistance is a big fraction of the resistance at these low speeds and it only has a square relation. Other resistances only have square relations as well like drive train losses. So averaged out he probably used 1,5x - 2x
@pengc65385 ай бұрын
@@maxtp948sorry I mean he was using a lot more energy just for the air resistance component. But at highway speeds it’s definitely the predominant component. Either way the point is the 20mph difference is a big difference in gas mileage.
@themindgarage89385 ай бұрын
True, but as someone else pointed out rolling resistance is a big factor, engines are very inefficient at lower throttle levels (iirc the ideal is something around 1500rpm and 80% throttle for most engines) and by travelling further, you "dilute" the effect of the city traffic which is probably the worst mpg part of the journey

Kenan isn't the smartest you must know that by now
@lolickypeepee23xdd65 ай бұрын
i mean its not about that its about the rpm, lets say doug had another gear and went 60 instead but at 1200 rpm the engine would be working exactly as hard but net even better mileage. kennans issue wasnt going 70 it was thinking 2500 was a good idea for maximizing range when you really want the engine working as little as possible at the highest speed it can at that low rpm
@comeberza5 ай бұрын
@@lolickypeepee23xdd6that is not true. Travelling and higher speeds ALWAYS requires more energy. This effect can only be countered by some weird aerodynamic desing that had poor low speed performance or by having the engine running more efficiently which won't happen if the rpm stay the same because engines are the most efficient at max torque rpm, so in the case you describe, traveling 1200 in 6th would probably make the car less efficient
@lolickypeepee23xdd65 ай бұрын
@@comeberza higher speeds do need it but the energy is from the engine and theres a certain line between rpm and max speed before one starts to outweigh the other, and realistically in a lot of cars will be close to max efficiency doing low rpm in the highest gear. people in corvettes can get over 30 mpg from massive 6.0 V8s by just chilling in the highest gear. i mean like low rpm 3rd gear for instance is gonna be less efficient than 4th at the same as the engines working the same to achieve a higher speed, so the logic applies until a certain maximum which is realistically varies depending on the engine/weight/drag
