I’m so thankful you made this video because no one talks about this! I spent so, so much money on fountain pens and planner supplies ever since joining the stationery community. Thankfully, I bought them for me and not for trying to make videos, but luckily I can make videos with what I have. But even then, I spent on equipment for filming like you. Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about how small KZbinrs start and if anyone else feels like me during the “I’m not monetized yet” stage. It really does feel like “how much I paid KZbin” instead of how much they pay me 😂😅. Thank you for making this video! It showed up randomly on my page. Hopefully it goes viral for you ☺️❤️

Haha! Yes! Until I made this video, it seemed like I was the only one is this situation. Based on the comments, there're a lot of us sharing the same experience! 😅 The stage of working hard and slowly getting closer to being monetized seems to be so loooong, it's almost a never ending phase. This is when other, more important reasons, why we do it, come handy. So, don't give up, let's enjoy the journey, the destination will take care of itself someday 😊❤️

You are so real for making this video! 🙏 KZbin and other socials like to only show us the posts of people who made it and that have thousands and thousands of views and subscribers and this may feel discouraging. Also I have just decided the same thing as you! I've bought a ton of art supplies (not for showing on YT because I haven't yet opened an art channel, but still, I have yet to use many of them in any meaningful way) and art and marketing courses, and now I've done a bit of self-reflection and I think I've got all I need for now, I just have to... actually follow through and do all those Domestika courses that I have stashed in my account. XD Let's go, we got this 💪

Ahhh this is a great video!!! (And not even because you mentioned me!) 🤣 I totally feel all of this. You are right, if anyone is thinking about doing youtube, they really do not need to spend a lot of money to be successful. But--sometimes it happens anyway!! 😁 I've bought a lot of equipment I didn't need, mostly before I even started my art channel because I had several other things I thought I wanted to try (but that never really took off for various reasons)...but I count it as living and learning. Plus, I tell myself that books and tools for creativity are never bad investments!! 😉💗

True! 😅 At the beginning I wanted to buy so much more, various digital cameras, studio lighting, everything I would see in other people's videos 😀 I could easily have ended up buying so much more than I have actually bought 😂 But I agree, you either succeed or learn and this is an investment. If you doubt, there's always a room for selling the item (for a lower price, but still 🙄). Thanks for sharing your thoughts about this matter 😊❤️

This is the most relatable video I've seen lately thank you for bringing this up. Hullo Katie, I am a semi-retired Artist. I have made educational type videos in the past. I have even recorded classes that I have taught at the local senior center. I have not created a KZbin channel as I know how hard video editing can be. I hope this very informative video gets you to or maybe even over those 4000 hours of watched video times! I have never seen this topic spoken about before in a video. I hope you get there. I believe that enjoying the creation of the channel and your videos is so important and if anyone is looking for that cash making machine, it is not in the “art” field! I think you could use those classes you bought for video content as a “I followed this Skillshare class what do you think?” This way you get more from the money already spent as well as content for your channel. You don’t have to name the artist nor specific class just as a drawing class from Skillshare! Use whatever kind of class you have already paid for! This might even motivate you to finish the class and learn more about your job or a technique you want to be better with? Thank you for sharing this video. I am sure those people who see it will be enlightened and be more informed about starting a KZbin channel. I wish you only the very best of luck and success going forward with your art journey and KZbin career!

I really thank you for your honesty, since it's not very common here. I totally understand you about the online courses (I bought some Domestika ones and started only 2 of them, sigh!); and about the 300$ one, I think it's more or less the average price for an art course (yes they're quite expensive :( ). I get your embarrassment in saying how much you've spent for them, but it's your money! Nobody should judge your for how you spend it 😉 Sometimes we are caught in a "I-need-more-of-them" circle: it might be that we are down and buying new stuff lifts us a bit, or we start a new hobby and get so excited that end up buying more than necessary. Haha! 😆 Buying new things can be therapeutic, but as soon as we turn into a collector or "untouchable items", that's when it's a problem 😅 I had the same issue with buying new books too, so I'm not buying any new books until I read every single one I already have 😂 It's useful to audit yourself sometimes 😀

this is quite relatable. in my case with my channel. i find it hard to just actually record my art. since i tend to make my best work while i'm sitting behind my laptop so i have every resource on hand. which makes getting to the Recording spot quite hard. because that's not where my stuff is usually. or i am just working on a thing not even thinking about recording it since i am already part way through it all. also Editing. not my strong suit. and when i check the analytics i always see people just watching the first minute then jumping straight to end. which just makes it feel like people don't give a damn about the process it took me to get to the cool end result. i tried condensing stuff more. yet people still skip around. watching less than a minute of a 10 minute video. like THE HECK IS THE POINT OF WATCHING ME MAKE STUFF.

What I would suggest regarding your videos is maybe change the form of titles your next videos and see if that works? For example, "How I paint a character from (x) with watercolor", "My full drawing/painting process of (x)". You can also give your videos a form of tutorial: "Beginner ink drawing tutorial" or "Intermediate painting tutorial of (x)" etc. As you said, sometimes you are half way through your painting/drawing, that's fine, you can use that too: for example, you can make a video of how much you drew in 1 week and include small parts of a drawing process for every piece. I love watching such videos 😊 Also pay attention to what kind of videos work for other bigger creators. Hope this helps ❤️

Ohhh, that was a really interesting, um, collage I guess? The thing that you did at the end. Sorry, english is not my first language 😅 I think it would look even more awesome if you add just some tiny little bit of a contrast in the girl drawing, to match the vibrant background☺️ Not too much, so it would not lose the more delicate feeling to it, just a lil bit :) That was an interesting vid and a point of view! Btw, I definitely am guilty of getting too much supplies which I do not use 😂 I read once somewhere, that it can be called a hobby by itself 😂

We can't help buying supplies. It's one thing we can give ourselves, if we can't get success, or even the energy to try to make a success. Having supplies helps give you an identity. If nobody knew about you, and you died leaving all your supplies behind, at least they would say, she seemed to want to be an artist. Maybe she was one, and we just can't find the proof. I might make a channel, and never tell anybody about it. Just to put my creation out into the world. It's a big world full of people that want success. We're not all gonna win, but we can put ourselves onto the internet.

It's very nice that you thought about making this video and being so honest. Because in any business, at first you need to invest a good amount of money to be successful later. I don't know when I'll get to monetize my content, but I am making videos regularly because I love it. This type of long form content is what I prefer and I don't want to follow trends just to become successful overnight. All the non-subscrption purchases are fine as long as you don't buy anything more and use what you already purchased. You can just do this by picking one course you bought and doing a little bit of it every day. I had this problem when I had a traditional small business, I bought a lot of courses and books, then got overwhelmed with what I bought. Just do little by little, day after day and you'll be surprised how quickly you get everything done. But don't think about how long it's gonna take or your brain is gonna freak out. Just remember, no matter how long it takes, that time is gonna pass anyway.

Great video!! I can relate...I've ended up spending ...much more than that 😅hahaa. But you're right the KZbin side of things is much more of a long term goal that will hopefully pay off later, it's not about the fastest way to monetization (I'd rather take my time and build up to that slowly, learning the content I want to make along the way, and getting better at it) Thankfully there are many ways to earn some money doing art to help support your creative work. For example I've been doing a lot of murals lately and that alone had more than paid for all the art expenses I've had. 😁

Yeahhh I can understand buying more supplies than you need at the time. In my case I see something new that I want to try and instead of just buying the bare minimum to test and see if I like it, I tend to jump in buying more than I need (like, for gouache I could get a 15ml professional primary 6pk for 36$ from Winsor and newton BUT I opt for the 10pk for 50$ and free shipping because I’m “saving money”). But then I run the risk of buying all that supplies and not liking it or using as it much as I thought I would (which happens more than I’d like to admit). I just get so excited and I love researching so much about the products for a while then I get them and it’s great… until it’s not 😂. I will say my best investment was a 70$ set of watercolors when I first started getting money and didn’t have to pay bills many years ago. I still use them. I’m always tempted to get some other cool watercolor product and I have to stop myself lol because I don’t need it.

As a fellow artist and having a youtube channel, earning a decent income from youtube is really quite difficult, I stopped trying years ago. As for spending a lot of money, well. As an artist I can tell you the pull to try new art supplies is a given, you don't need a youtube channel or to be influenced by others. I have collected lot of art supplies over the years, I love them, I use them, but objectively it's too much. I also have a youtube channel, but most of my expenses were already done for my art career. (though I did upgrade my camera for a flip screen at some point) As you said, youtube isn't easy to make an income from, after years of having an art career and now being financially stable, youtube is just a little bonus money for me and a place where I share my process or thoughts. I think you've got the right mindset though, we live in a world where it seems it's so easy to make money using social media, but that's just not the reality for 99,9% of us.

You could switch to digital art and then you wouldn't have any expenses at all. The only expense that you would have is buying a tablet and then I guess you would have to learn the software. But digital art is way cheaper. But maybe there's more views in traditional people like to watch people draw on paper. Besides tutorial videos on how to do digital art, most channels that focus on digital art is mostly just speed paintings, which not a lot of people find that interesting. I like digital art videos just to learn new techniques. But I do like drawing in my sketchbook. I only use digital for like finished illustrations but for like a quick sketch I'd rather just draw on paper
@Katiors5 ай бұрын
Well, both traditional and digital drawing/painting have their pros and cons. Using both of them together is the best option. It's very draining for my eyesight to watch at the digital screen for hours before I finish the piece, that's one of the reasons I prefer traditional more. Although I definitely want to learn and improve digital drawing as well, I know I'll never be able to completely switch to it and leave traditional drawing. Also, I love the feel of the brush or pencil or paint that I put on the paper 😊 I agree that digital art can be so much cheaper than traditional art 💁🏼♀️
@williammclean65945 ай бұрын
@@Katiors yeah, the only real expense in digital is the expensive tablet that you have to buy for your setup depending on your budget. But yeah I like how traditional art feels. I love real oil painting. No matter how good the brushes are with digital, it doesn't look the same. I like the look of digital but even using like a program that's designed to look traditional like rebelle 7 It still doesn't look the same. And even if it does, it doesn't feel the same while you're painting compared to real painting. And sometimes I just don't want to go to my computer to draw so that's why I'm thinking about getting an iPad.
@Katiors5 ай бұрын
@@williammclean6594 I've never tried any tablet to draw digitally, besides Ipad. But I've seen a lot of videos where people draw by using tablets and it always seemed to me to be very hard. Looking at the screen while drawing on the tablet without looking is a completely different skill that seems very hard to gain 😄 I might be mistaken and maybe it's not that hard when you try to actually learn how it's done, but it doesn't look easy or comfortable from the outside. Looking at the screen while drawing and paying attention to where and what you are doing with your hand and art supply makes more sense to my brain 😅
@williammclean65945 ай бұрын
@@Katiors Oh yeah that's like a pen tablet. I think. Mine is a display tablet so you draw right on the tablet. It's a heuon 24-inch . Yeah I could never use a tablet where I have to be looking at my screen. I don't think a lot of people use those anymore. It's just a budget option. I like my tablet but it's not mobile so I have to be at my desk to use it. I like it because it's really big. That's why I went with it instead of an iPad because the iPad was a bit too small. But a lot of professional artists now sketch on their iPad and then finish it on their big tablet after importing the file. You could probably do the whole thing on your iPad but PC's just have a lot more powerful tools. Like the app versions of apps on iPad are always missing some features like if you use Photoshop for example. But they say like the next iPad is coming out probably next month or at the end of the year and it's supposed to be like 13 inchs. So I'm just waiting for it to come out. It's supposed to be a big redesign so I don't want to spend my money on like the old version

@@williammclean6594 Oh, I got you. Huion 24 inch looks pretty good as a drawing tablet. And yes, mobility is important. I'm usually trying my best not to pay attention how technology is being upgraded, because I might be tempted to buy something new 😅 But I think it's going to be safe if I check info about the upcoming Ipad 😀
