Probably the most requested video recently. Heres a cost breakdown of what it really costs to own and operate your own aircraft. Keep in mind, this isn't EVERYTHING! However, it is the majority of things you need to look out for. If you have any questions or want a more in depth cost analysis, let me know in the comments below!

Thoroughly, thoroughly, enjoyed this !! I started Flying when I was 14 years old. My first passenger the day I got my private was my Dad ! We joined a flying club together while I was in college … what awesome memories ! Love how you talk about GA and your family, flying with your Dad … memories you’ll have forever !! Thanks for an awesome video Garrett !

One of the best videos on GA that i've seen to date. Absolutely great information and very inspiring. I myself am considering the age old question of renting vs buying and getting back into aviation after a long break. There is truly nothing like jumping in your own plane and flying to a vacation destination to explore cross country. But one must be diligent with the financial aspect of owning a plane and this video greatly helped.

Where I do my training, most of our Cessna 172S’ have the G1000 avionics. A few still have steam gauges, and we have 1 with the G5s. The G1000 is beautiful.

Brand new private pilot and purchased a Cessna 172M 6 months ago. The fixed costs are a killer! Insurance(2000/ year) hangar rent (600/month at my airport shared space) payment on the airplane (undisclosed) etc. I feel like you would need to fly 80-100 hours a year minimum to make it more cost effective than renting an aircraft. I plan to fly 250 plus hours a year to build tine prepping for the airlines and commuting for work so that’s why I made the purchase. A bonanza A36 is on my wishlist.

250k on a airframe approaching 10,000 hours? Wow. Prices are crazy. Exactly why I recently sold my 75 Arrow. Nutty money flying around. I got almost 20% more than my purchase price 4 years ago. Basic 6 pack, 430 non-wass, no engine monitor, inop egt. It wore me down maintenance wise. Every trip I was always wondering what’s next…owning requires a huge financial commitment.

I'm more curious about your fixed costs (hangar, insurance) variable costs (fuel, annuals, squawk repairs), and hours flown per year. Also, with the tightening insurance market, I'm curious about the approximate age of the owner (your father? mid 50's to mid 60's) and his total hours. I'll presume your fuel flow is between 13 and 17 gph? Thanks

What is a good starter plane that is a reasonable price? I’m 17 and working on getting my private pilots license and I’m looking to buy my first plane after I get my license. I was thinking of a piper warrior but is there better options. I’m going to be using it as a time builder Bc I want to end up becoming a Airline pilot.

Piper warrior, Cherokee under 60k. Grumman traveler, Beechcraft musketeer or sundowner but are slower than the warrior. All these are up 10k or more the last year.

A cessna 150/152 is a great and super cheap option costing anywhere from 20k-60k on the high end for one with low hours. Only downside is that they are slow and can only cruise at around 100KIAS and most don't have any avionics at all. But they are cheap to maintain and only burn around 6GPH. Great starter plane to fly VFR.

Could you cover at some point the costs of a flight? You talked about the fuel and the cost of an hour of flying but what about like landing fees, etc.? Is there some fees for ATC? Any other fees? What if you do a training and do some multiple landings, do you get charged multiple time? And how different it is for a commercial flight? Thanks.

New to the channel…so this might be dumb…but you keep saying “we.” Do you have a partner? If so, I’d love a video about how you structured your partnership, how that’s worked out for you, etc etc. I want to buy a plane, but the costs seems so impossible to cover without a partner. I would like to say though, you are much more transparent than other aviation YTers, and I really appreciate that. Enjoying this channel!

Nice aircraft! But just can't shake how does someone who thinks he is in the green even when just 2.5 months of cost of ownership and unforseen costs have already eaten into his "profits", how does someone like this have the financial stability to afford an aircraft like this.... must have enough money to be able to pretend like that. If I were to follow the same "business plan" to flip houses, I would be broke. Yes, you would get more money than you paid for it if you sold in an uptrend market, BUT by that time, you have already spent all that "profit" in ownership cost. Basic finances 101. I like to pretend that fixing and doing my own maintenance on my boat offsets the cost of ownership, but I know I'm lying to myself. The more I use it and the longer that it sits in my garage the more it is slowly eating away at any "profit" I could make from selling it. And boats have gone up in price since I bought it. And those are the raw true numbers. Unless you have enough money to pretend they are not.
