Bought a ‘46 Champ in 2014, a relatively inexpensive plane for those not familiar and I absolutely love ownership for the reasons you’ve stated. Of course almost nobody rents Champs so buying was essential to be able to regularly fly a Champ. By the way though I live/operate in NJ, I learned to fly Champs down the road from you in Waynesville at Red Stewart Airfield-love that place and those folks! (They do rent their Champs for local flights.) One other cost is the pre-buy (I brought in Paul Workman from Ohio to do mine-such an expert on fabric taildraggers!). I highly recommend taildragger flying! A marvelous challenge and with a ‘46 Champ, a trip into the past.

Great video! mixing the joy of ownership with the reality of the costs. I'm training in a Cirrus SR-20 and love it. I'm thinking I'd like to buy a SR-22T as I finish getting my PPL and move into IFR with my plane. My mission is business and pleasure. Traveling from the Austin, Tx area to Florida, other SE states and then west to Az, Colorado with an occasional trip to California. In the process of gathering costs, and doing analysis. My target is a G3 SR-22T. Now I need to establish the "real" cost so that I can plot and plan!

I think you ought to keep your plane and here's the reason why, towards the last part of your video when you were describing how much you love your plane the look in your eyes, the expression on your face and the way you said it, I can feel the love coming through your video and I know what that feels like. Now this is not quite the same but, I'm a truck driver I own and operate my own truck for the last 18 years. My first truck that I ever had and I love that truck, I babied that truck and that truck took care of me and my family. So I understand that feeling that you're having. I want a vehicle that every time I put the key in the ignition to start it, im happy, satisfied and very pleased. I don't want no settle for because I won't be happy with it. That's what I'm sensing from you about your airplane and to me, that is what it's all about. I say put the money into it, keep it and keep enjoy the hell out of it because I'm a tell you something, trust me, everything shiny ain't gold baby. Enjoyed your video stay safe and happy Happy flying Ms. Lady.

Airplanes are currently selling at a premium!! It is definitely a sellers market! This airplane has more bells and whistles than necessary to time build. I've since sold it. It was a great airplane! It sold for close to $200,000. Like I said, more expensive than necessary. If I had to do it again, my first airplane would've been less elaborate. Buy something very simple and basic until you get through training and then decide what you really want from an airplane. :)

You're Southern! You'll figure it out! I like that you kept some of your accent to liven up Cincinnatti. I have been wanting to find a suitable aircraft to leaseback to an FBO, and your video has given me some food for thought. There's a small airport close to me that has one runway long enough for a bizjet. It would be convenient for me to learn to fly out of that airport, but I need to talk to the folks at that flight school and see if there's a way for us to help each other out. This is the first KZbin video of yours that I've seen. I've been following you on Instagram for awhile. I look forward to watching more of your adventures and advice. Keep it Southern! Thanks from N. Before you lease back your plane, talk to AOPA for advice--they are super helpful. You'll have to insure it for business use ($4000) rather than personal use ($1200), pay a CPA with aviation knowledge (not easy to find) to do your taxes (not sure, maybe $400/hr) plus do 100hr maintenance in addition to the annuals, plus cover the additional maintenance from greater use, and maybe incorporate it in case some bozo hurts someone with it so your assets will be safe after the law suits. Generally, you'll need it leased back 35hr/mon for 12 mons just to cover the added cost of the leaseback over owning. That's not easy. Great video by the way. I want to get a plane when I finish PPL but am scared of the costs. Your annuals seemed high unless lots of things were getting replaced. Maybe the glass cockpit makes it high? Another important cost is fuel. 10g/hr at $5.50/gal over 100hr/yr is $5500. That should be biggest part of the expense. IMHO, its hard to justify ownership; however, if your expenses are okay (college savings for kids are funded, if you have them, your retirement is funded, you have cash reserves for a year in case you lose your job, your credit cards are paid off every month) then keep the plane. Else... think about selling it outright or partnering with someone. But then its not yours any longer, and there inevitably will be conflicts about who gets it when and how much maintenance to do. Tough decision. Wish you luck. Keep safe.

It had been 17 years since it had a legal annual. @@flyGIRLKelley It has an engine mod, that I love, high compression pistons in a bored out 360. Still an IO 360 just high compression 390 cylinders. The paperwork says IO 360 C1C. My instructor and I took off from KLCK left gear down because of long runway. We were asked to turn so a 747 could take off, we did. On our way home I could not get the speed I wanted. I pushed the power up. Got in the yellow with the gear down. That engine will go. I have an excuse, that was my first landing in 32 years, I can no longer get a medical but my wife is a pilot and future S-I-L is getting his license . My instructor is now flying jets so we’ll just call it a moment for him. So far no problems at all, great plane, everyone who has flown it loves it. I worked for 20 years in the airline industry and my Arrow is the equivalent of one of our Boeings coming out of D-Check, I expected a lot of problems but have had zero. I sent the state $60, see if I get in trouble.

An oil analysis at each oil change is a small investment that can really tell you about the state of the engine. The TBO is a recommendation, and at least anecdotally an engine is more likely to fail shortly after a major service than after 100's or thousands of hours of running well. If you keep up with the maintenance and the health of your engine is showing as good, you can easily go beyond TBO. That of course is a personal decision.

It was a 2006. I loved it! There are pros and cons to low wings vs high wings. I felt like it was more stable than a 172 but the visibility below you is limited whereas the visibility above you is limited in a 172. It could also be problematic to get in and out of because there is only one door, on the right side. For someone who is taller or has limited mobility, it would be more challenging to get situated.

I’m looking to buy a bellenca Viking. My biggest scare is cost. I have so many questions.
@flyGIRLKelley
@flyGIRLKelley Жыл бұрын
I would recommend asking around, getting information from a local airplane maintenance shop to see what they know about the maintenance expenses, annual cost on that particular airplane; find out hangar costs; look for an online group of Bellenca Viking owners and ask questions. Also, call or send an email to an aviation insurance agent with the airplane specifics and they can give you a quote for insurance. You can get answers pretty quick from all of these locations.

How did you justify the cost of traveling via your plane vs the lesser cost of commercial flights? Struggling with this one

Mostly because I was also trying to build flight hours so it wasn't necessarily about the most economical way to travel. :)

Hi Kelley. My opinion FWIW, if your mission has changed or you need a faster aeroplane, more capacity, whatever, then look for something else. If not, you have a lovely machine that you know like the back of your hand, with excellent glass and avionics, highly capable and relatively new. The engine overhaul, though expensive at the time, will turn your newish machine with a tired engine into a newish machine with a new engine. I still regret selling my beloved Glasair, you may experience the same getting rid of your Archer. Hope this helps. Cheers, Jim.

Hi Flygirl Kelly -- there are quite a few hidden costs involved when it comes to owning a plane. I would be interested as to how some of these costs could be kept to a minimum (build your own hangar next to your house). Also, it would have been useful to tabulate these costs and show us the Table, so we can mull the figures over. Sorry to hear that the engine to your plane needs a thorough overhaul. $30 k to $40 k is quite steep! You could buy a small aircraft for that amount. Where does the average person get that from? Trading the markets? Flying commercially? Ever thought of a STOL aircraft Kelly? The sort of plane you could take off from your backyard in? Why be shackled to a runway when you can be absolutely free? Anyway, I like your style Kelly.

@@flyGIRLKelley Kelly, one STOL bush-plane took off after 2.5 ft with brakes applied to the wheels. That has to be a vertical take-off. If ever there were civil unrest in the US, you would have to make it to the airport to get out. That's another hoop as far as I am concerned. Look at the mad scramble in Kabul. Many didn't make it out. In my mind you've got to be able to exit whenever you want to, even when the military close the roads and airports. Best to be able to take off at night, fly as low as is safely possible and exit the hot zone. You need at least a 4-seater to be able to exit with your loved ones. Think about it. Keep safe!

Tiedowns and the cold is not in and of itself that bad. Just dress for the weather (layers). My issue in northern WI is all the snow. I don't want it sitting on the wings. we can get 2ft of wet snow overnight, don't want that on my wings. In AZ, at the flight school we left the planes tied down outside all year. Some airports also offered overhear cover, like at a gas station, as a cheaper alternative to a hangar. You tend to see this in warmer states.

Curious if you use an app like Coflyt for managing maintenance, etc. Hoping to begin my plan ownership journey in the next year. Finishing my PPC now (checkride soon). I have been looking at C182T and I like the cost of the Archer 3 with all the upgrades compared to others. Do you find it to be a true 4-seat aircraft though? - that is critical criteria for me. I have tried to look for aircraft with at least a 1,000 - 1,100 lb. useful load and 650nm range. Great video.

That's exciting!! A new airplane! I just started using PlaneLogix, which is a program that helps keep up with the maintenance. As far as the Archer, I loved my Archer but it would not be able to carry 4 adults. It's more of a 2 adult, 2 small children airplane. The 182 may be a better fit if you need to be able to carry heavier passengers. I hope this is helpful! Thank you for reaching out!

An oil change analysis will give you a real picture of how you're engine's running. As Eric said, if an engine failure is going to happen, it's typically shortly after a major service as opposed to an engine that has been running well for years.
