Welcome to my KZbin channel. This channel is the home for all your vintage Mid-Year Corvette content. Today I am comparing the exhaust sound and volume of all the cars in the fleet. I used my very advanced rig to measure the sound in the car and the results came out great. Spoiler alert!! Each car is roughly 10dB louder than the previous car in the test. It just worked out that way lol.
I just finished restoring a 1963 Corvette Split Window and I am starting another split window build but this time its a race car build. I will be making videos every Friday. I will be making videos on my 1963 Corvette Split Window, my dad's 1965 Corvette, my race car split window build, my friends 1960 Corvette, and other projects that I find along the way. Let me know what you think about the video. Enjoy!!
If you are interested in an official MYM hat or if you have any questions please send me an email to midyearmitch@gmail.com.
Check out my Instagram for some behind the scenes pics of my builds.

Sit back and enjoy the show!

As a wannabe musician/drummer who's dealt with noise complaints and owned old trucks and decibel meters to see if the complaints were valid.......... that last Vette on this vid is a rockstar, something to the effect of 130 decibels that car would single handedly drown out most live bands today just by merely driving by em, whilst blasting away ear drum fibers of the driver.😂. Love this vid and the cars, very unique idea. You might want to invest in some air pilot's ear plugs tho,lol, unless you don't mind being deaf like an old farmer who's driven cabless tractors all his life.

When my sister got married in 1969, she and her husband lived in a duplex, upstairs, above a garage. And, the guy who had the garage, parked his C2, and when he started it up inside the garage, the whole building would shake. The new Mid-engine Vette is high-tech and fast, but for ground shaking power, those old Vettes can't be beat. Same deal with the new muscle cars vs the old ones.

While sidepipes sound cooler and more visceral, if I were given a chance to take a mid-year home it has to have exhausts coming out of the back. It sounds less obnoxious and looks more aesthetically pleasing.

My favorite C-2 engine sound comes from the 350 HP 327 with side pipes...of course rear exhaust sound great too. I had a 67 283 Chevy Nova with dual rear exhaust and a friend replaced the cam with the 327/350 HP cam I bought at my Chevy dealer for $17 dollars. I was very happy with the sound and it probably also gained a few H.P.........I prefer the 350HP hydraulic cam to the higher H.P. solid lifter cam engine becasue the exhaust sound is not not accompanied by valve lifter noise....

Mitch, old Bud again with more science. The dB scale is logarithmic, meaning that a sound louder than another by 10dB is really twice as loud.

Agh yes it has been awhile since I took dynamic systems. The old logarithmic scale. I appreciate the mathematical additions to the video! It adds some more knowledge to the channel. It also shows that each car is twice as loud as the car that was tested before it 😂

@MidYearMitch
@MidYearMitch 3 жыл бұрын
Yes that would definitely help! The inside of the car is like a drum since it doesn’t have any insulation or carpet. So they would quiet it down a little too. I’m sure I would get some flak for that too lol. Although if you look at the data I collected. The outside rev and inside acceleration measurements were basically identical. The car needs a quieter exhaust to be more street friendly.

Thank you Mitch, love the comparison! I like the Misfits exhaust sounds best as it is the pure power of the 327! I wonder were there any C2's coming off the GM's assembly line with sidepipes? If it was, were the crossmember of those cars made for not having the conventional exhaust system under the car?
@bbb462cid
@bbb462cid 9 ай бұрын
Side pipes were absolutely factory available on a C2 and were installed on the assembly line. The option code was N14 and was first offered in 1965. In 1966 for example, 3617 new Corvettes were ordered with the N14 sidepipes. The crossmember is not a factor in the sidepipe option. The exact same frame is used as non-sidepipe cars and no part of the frame interferes with the sidepipes. Only Corvettes of this era with bodies made at the St. Louis plant could get sidepipes at the factory. Cars with bodies made by AO Smith did not receive the N14 option. However you can install the N14 on any C2 but there are slight body modifications that need to be made regardless of where the body was made. This too is the factory procedure.

Definitely something to consider. I guess the sound goes with what the car is being used for. From mild to wild, you have them all. Thanks for the comparison and thanks for turning the 5th Monday for this week into Happy Friday. Any tips on the proper way to put these to bed for the winter and how often should they be started. Have a safe week.

@jimrains8314
@jimrains8314 3 жыл бұрын
The cut out idea is a great one. The best of both worlds especially on a car like the Misfit. It has a fantastic engine than would sound great just by itself with a quiet exhaust. And when it's time for the business side of the Misfit, open those babies up and let her rip.

We normally store them with a good bit of gas in the tank and add stabil in the tank. Then run the car so it gets in the carb too. We start them a few times over the winter. I’ll have to do some more research on it and make a video about. Sadly that time is coming fast.

My first Vette a 1965 365 4:10 4 speed convertible was just exactly the correct pleasing sound. No sidepipes, I don't need that kind of silly raw noise even when I was young. The beauty is in hearing the transmission whine going through the gears, the engine sounds at the high rpms they would produce and not the raw ugly sidepipe 'unmusical' noise that drowns them out. Tests have been done to compare the outside chambered exhaust to under the car original and sometimes the outside loud ass exhaust actually robbed power. Nope, I don't need a fake testosterone fix I'll stick with factory under the car exhaust. The non HP gaining loudness is just kid stuff to me. I was never impressed by it but to each his or her own. I've had 7 vettes total and with 3 different mid years I know a little bit about them.

Agreed I have a 65 Roadster L79 850 Holley, I bought it in 1973 Standing behind my car, listening to it idle with stock exhaust is music to my ears It's 3.08 geared So at 70 mph it is around 1900 rpms. The sound of flooring it, and the music I hear while the front end is lifting is surreal. I am sure that you can relate. ☮️

In my experience I've heard very few good sounding side exhaust, being on drivers side you have to like the sound of hearing half the engine more vs the blend of all the pulses, so sounds a bit lazier. But imo the difference between an ok sounding side exhaust is compression, the higher the better it sounds. I had an old nova with in front of the wheel side exhaust with long tubes and turbos but the engine in it when I bought it was a tired puffed a bit stock smog era 350 with a mild crane cam Energizer 274 or something that was it GM intake, and Holley double pumper 650 Q-jet replacement carb just that cam it still ran decently strong for what it was and it sounded ok tone never really changed just got louder but I tossed a lunatic bracket master II cammed 355 at time crap 305 heads smaller valves but small chambers and flat tops so it was at least 10.25:1 and wow what a difference louder crisper and it had some crackle in higher RPMs that I liked. They were temporary heads and wasn't fast with them no low end from cam and no top end from heads. I got better heads but when I changed them I found a damaged piston from detonation had chunk missing and could see some of top ring but it didn't smoke and ran fine but had a slight vibration. New off the shelf cheap 4.030 cast flat top $15 at car quest back perfect it's in my truck now 18 years later it had a refresh 10 years ago before it went in my truck. It's bout done now tired and has really worn .030 over bore so sadly it's junk because im not going .060 so I'm building a roller new short block. May reuse current cam it is awesome but I'd like to upgrade. If anyone is looking for imo the best FT street cam with nice broad TQ curve with a sweet lumpy idle howards 112031-08 it's speced for "heavy vehicals" .480/.480 231°/231° 108lsa 109icl? If remember right. And imo Howards makes the absolute best cams.

Half the interior is missing so naturally it is gonna sound louder inside. The fact that side pipes exit at you ear is undisputed louder than rear exhaust.
@MidYearMitch
@MidYearMitch 2 жыл бұрын
Right that’s why I measured the exhaust volume in several places to make the data comparable. The misfit exhaust volume was nearly identical inside the car and outside the car. Also an interior wouldn’t have done too much. That car was so violent a little carpet wouldn’t have done much. It depends which side exhaust you get. They do make super quiet ones but I really don’t see the point. It’s all about the volume with side pipes.

I have a 64 air coupe that someone put side exhausts on and hacked up the rocker molding hangers and the front and rear fiberglass end pieces. I dislike side exhaust so much that I have been fabricating it back to original. It takes work and it's costly but that's just how much I detest the side exhausts although it would have been so much easier to remount them.

It’s not all about horsepower numbers with old cars. I would think sidepipes would make more power. The main reason why they are better than back exhaust is they sound amazing. They also look sweet and scream 1960’s. They are so cool. It’s all about being cool.

Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars, trucks and busses including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing petrol stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime. :-(((
