See how much lumber we can get out of a cord of logs. I have my dump trailer full of the equivalent of a cord of small diameter Ponderosa pine logs. We cut them up into lumber on my wood Mizer LT 15 Sawmill. with the results we can figure out if it is worth more to cut the logs into firewood or into lumber.

Renewable it is. I will probably have videos about that and forest management in the future. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I've never figured yield that way. If I scale the logs I use International scale since it's closer to bandsaw yield, but I've never tried to see if I beat scale or not. I wouldn't think you had 75% waste though.
@WilsonForestLands
@WilsonForestLands 2 жыл бұрын
I had so much waste because of the nature of this load of logs. They were small diameter, some had a lot of taper and thick bark. Also a few of them had a considerable amount of sweep. If it was a cord of larger diameter straighter logs, the waste would have been much less. The objective here was to see how much I could get out of these low grade logs.

Similar size acreage. I think it’s better we put our money into that instead of equipment we don’t need.

What blades are you using on your mill? I bought the same mill as you and have been using 9° double hard.
@WilsonForestLands
@WilsonForestLands Жыл бұрын
Mostly 10° double hard. I have some 7° double hard and I really haven’t noticed a difference on the mostly softwoods I cut. But that may be I just haven’t use the 7° enough or just haven’t paid enough attention.

@WilsonForestLands thank you for the reply. I really enjoy the versatility of the 9°. I have a 14hp on my mill and I can tell when it's dogging down when it's ripping thru the log. I can also tell when I don't have enough lubricant.

@@cfxsniper When I was asking Woodmizer about blades, they never gave me the option of 9°. I recently heard someone else talking about them. I may have to look into those.

looks like you threw away a couple boards from every log
@WilsonForestLands
@WilsonForestLands 2 жыл бұрын
It may look like that on video but in real life it looks different when you can see how much sweep and taper the logs had. Sometime you have to cut into them deep to counter the bend in the log.
