Hi there! I am Joseph.
I have been an expat living in central Portugal along with my beautiful girlfriend Mariana for six years now.
Together Mariana and I, along with my father Clinton and my brother in law Lloyd, would like to show you a bit of the daily goings on around our Portuguese farm / homestead / smallholding and all of the work we are doing whilst renovating, starting building projects, working with our livestock, DIY and trying to grow our little families own food!
In this episode we welcome you to join us in the Spring time as we continue our cherry harvest into the third week of the season. We have now moved up into the main cherry orchard and although many of the mid season varieties are not yet ripe, there are many cherries on the trees. We explain a little about the 'ins and outs' involved in farming cherries on a small scale organic fruit farm in central Portugal, plus some handy hints on how you could make money by quitting your job and becoming an expat farming in central Portugal, selling fruit and producing your families own food.
I break down the wholesale prices and reveal exactly how much we can earn in this short six week period. I tell of my opinion regarding the pros and cons of the three ways to sell the fruit - by use of a transport company, wholesale and private sales, I also give my first hand experience regarding the prices of all three.
Lloyd and I get the weather damaged cherries and start the process of infusing some alcohol to make liqueurs for the winter time. We pit the cherries and place them inside glass jars, pour over the brandy and agaurdente, break some cinnamon sticks and leave for the flavours to be drawn into the drink.
Mariana and I go to Fundão to buy some cherry boxes in our neighbours pick up truck. The only boxes available in the agricultural shop were flat pack ones, so I spend a while constructing them.
Mickey and Simba the baby lambs go to their new forever home as Colin and Lisa's pet lawnmowers, along with a couple of chickens. I will miss them but I am so happy they are going to a nice farm!
Later on in the day my father cuts the grass and I give the lawn clippings to the poultry, explaining a little about why you should not overdo the amount of clippings chickens receive.
Right at the end of the video I recap the goings on this week on the farm, accompanied by Mitzy in the vegetable garden, watering the cabbages.
See our journey to self sufficiency / permaculture / organic farming as expats living in Portugal, trying to produce as much of our own food planting vegetables, growing fruit trees as well as looking after all our animals, such as our chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks, quail, rabbits and sheep - Shortly pigs too!
Hobby farming with my beautiful girlfriend!
Growing vegetables, raising meat and foraging on our cherry farm in Portugal’s Beira baixa, Fundão

There's a 3rd option (since your cherries are pesticide-free) to sell the cherries but requires having your own truck and contacts, meaning you load your truck and transport them yourself to a different country and deliver personally to your contact (buyer) you can get more per kilo (up to 5€ or more) but also you have some more expenses, know some farmers that own big farms who do it like that. If you grow your product in Portugal but then you sell it abroad then its a good idea, to sell on the local market can be optimal or not depending like Joseph said on a number of variables and the produce (having a niche or not), you just need to rely on basic economics and a proper business plan (but planning never suites nature I can tell you that), of course, being a seasoned farmer doesn't hurt ;)) Another great vid guys enjoyed it very much.. keep them comin
@Farmerforfun
@Farmerforfun 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for that VERY informative comment my friend! You are SO right, nature does not like plans haha!! We did consider taking the crop back to our home town in England as we know a fruit seller there who could get top price for them, but the problem before would have been transporting whilst we still need to harvest, we had an issue a few years back with employing people in (lets just say we probably will not be doing that again) so now we just keep the harvesting in the family, but if you could get some temporary workers to get the harvest done (which you trust of course) then yes that would be a wonderful idea!! Thank you so much again for the lovely comment my friend! Thank you for watching, it means the world to us! Joseph

I truly admire you -- you are pursuing a great, productive lifestyle -- and having fun, enjoying yourselves! It appears that your poultry is not fed with "mad-cow-type of dry rations". They feed themselves with natural, healthy stuff. Like in the time of our great-grand-fathers. I must confess, my brothers and I own 3 nice farms. In some of them, there are houses just expecting to be refurbished . Located not far from 2 major cities and around , respectively, 20 mnutes and 45 minutes from a gorgeous, famous beach. Unfortunately, I only visited the properties about 25 years ago. I was just a small kid -- I'm not much into farms, plants, trees, etc.

Oooh can’t wait to sample that cherry liquor 😍 it’s nice to see your lambs going to good homes of people you know will care for them as you have done. You should really only water your veggies early morning or after sunset as the water that settles on big leaves can often act like a magnifying glass and scorch them 😎

Ok. Lets say I bought 3 acres, the soil is junk all rocky and stuff. I go to the hardware shop and buy truckloads of topsoil to give me about 6 inches of decent soil on the top. What could I grow? what makes/sells for a high price? What can survive the Portuguese heat? and if I leave my property for a month to visit family what could survive having little or no maintenance? these are all going through my mind.
@slanwar
@slanwar 3 жыл бұрын
The truckloads of topsoil would cost more than the land itself😎 is a lot of land for sale in central Portugal, mostly abandoned because the younger generation moved out to the cities/another country and the older generation is dying. You just need to search and take your time to find good land.
@Farmerforfun

Hello there Graham, what a wonderful interesting comment my friend! This depends on a few variables, for example Fundão is the capital for cherries, this is largely in part to the cold winds coming off the Serra Da Estrela to the north of us, the cherries need this cold breeze in the winter to strengthen them in the spring! They also need heavy irrigation in the summer months, we have already started our irrigation now. There are other areas where different plants thrive, just twenty miles out south the ground is extremely sandy and would be unsuitable for the stones fruit trees (they would grow but not in the same quality as they would here). Oranges (well, citrus in general actually) however do not survive well on our side of the mountain. The country is so diverse and varies widely in fertility / soil types / water quantity etc that it would really require a lot more information on a farm to answer this question fairly and do the answer justice. I hope that helps my friend, I’m not an expert by any means but this is certainly an opinion I believe to be very accurate. Thanks so much for such an interesting comment and I hope to have shed a little light in the subject! Have a great week ahead! Joseph

I mentioned this on a previous video, not sure if you already filmed this video before I commented last time, however; if you use a bottle with an opening slightly smaller than the whole cherry and use a chopstick or straw or any other long straight small-ish object you can push out the pits really quickly by placing the cherry on the bottle& holding between pointer finger and thumb whilst pushing the chopstick through from the stem part, at least it's faster than cutting with a knife.

Its way easier to pitcherries with a chopstick, just stick it by pointing it at the middle while holding it within a fist, youll get the hang of it. Works the majority of the time.

Joe, would you be able to recommend a channel similar to yours that showcases homestead properties with a sea view? We like quite a few of the central Portugal properties you've investigated but would be really interested to compare them with homesteads closer to the western shoreline. Thanks so much for sharing your adventure with us. So inspiring and informative for those looking to follow.

If I knew any I would love to recommend them, unfortunately I do not... But, watch this space, with Marianas seaside background I am considering advertising a few soon!!

@@Farmerforfun Oh great, we'll be looking forward to those! We had seen a couple of homesteads with distant views of the ocean a few years ago, but haven't come across many recently. Love your vids and would be interested to hear your take on farming/homesteading in sea-breeze environments. Eagerly encouraging the considerations on this!!

Thanks for this lovely encouraging channel. Hi from Germany. As a professional gardener and graduated biologist me too I would like to live in such a place. My main project are different varieties of of Yacon plants (Smallanthus sonchifolius) from the Andes. A newly discovered superfood. Getting a tuber harvest of 10 kg from one plant. They should not get temperatures above 30 degrees. How is your climate in summer? My 2 dogs are hungarian sheepdogs rescued from Hungary. Also I used to have an icelandic sheepdog for 13 years. She was great in chasing out birds from my garden and catching mice. Traditionally they protect lambs from avian predators. In childhood I lived in Chile for 3 years and learned some Spanish. So I can understand a bit of portugués. Many friendly greetings and waiting for your answer.

I make cherry bomb. I put up the cherries after picking, cherries, 1/4 to 1/2 cup of sugar, fill to 1 in from top. Lid and cap; hot water bath. Put it away until Thanksgiving. Makes a wonderful cherry liqueur. The cherries: i make a buttercream filling and dip them in dark chocolate...delicious treat!

I love your farm and lifestyle, but how do 3 families survive on 3 to 5 tonne of cherries? Have you diversified and bring in other types of income?
@Farmerforfun
@Farmerforfun 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Kym, thank you so much!! In one of the videos I explain that we don’t actually make a living from the farm, it’s a hobby farm, each of the three families have their own passive income from our previous lives back in the U.K. that allows us to live out here, the money generated from the cherry harvest feeds the animals for the year 😊 💕 Thank you for watching along, commenting and subscribing Kym, it really means the world to us, thank you!
