I’m 24 (almost 25) years old now and I grew up playing every Tony hawk game. Every single one. I went to the boom boom huck jams, bought birdhouse boards. Used to skateboard everyday outside before my pre-teens. Tony Hawk was the ultimate role model for kids when I was growing up. As I got a little older I grew out of skating and forgot how big of a part my life it used to be. Watching this video made me remember how big of an impact Tony Hawk had on my life. that was a onetime royalty for the first 3 games. He's probably been paid 20-30 times that amount over time.
@XBLArmory5 жыл бұрын
@Timothy Dexter Looked up the releases and knowing the size of the market pretty well I'd bet that was his second or third royalty check, the biggest games in the franchise sales wise all came before 2008, and knowing how the market scaled I'd bet The last three neversoft games sold well but represented the decline in the franchise, typically in franchise decay on annualized releases like we saw in the tony hawk games the sales figures stagnate but don't markedly decline for about three bad "mainline" games. I'd bet he got to the point where he was getting 6-8 million per year but that probably began to dry up by 2010, most everything after Ride was dislike excluding the remake of pro skater 1. I'd bet the franchise put him shy of 60 million over it's life time and that's assuming he had the same royalty percentage on the later games as he did on the early games, which I sort of doubt.

I'm 40 years old and cant express to Tony how much he meant to my childhood. From the "Bones Brigade" to "Birhouse" to "Pro Skater". One of my favorite childhood movies are "Search For Animal Chin" and "Gleaming The Cube".I learned the pop shove-it from pictures of you riding your big ramp in your backyard. I watched you nail that first 900. I was in line opening day to ride your ride at 6 flags. The music in your videos and games are some of my biggest musical influences in my band the "Tough Actin' Tinactins". I just want to say Thank You to Tony Hawk for a lifetime of enjoyment and influence.

@@2678dhetysjk Who didn't love the Tony Hawk games growing up. Playing a sport in a video game is obviously worlds different than actually playing that sport. I have no interest in getting on a skateboard irl, but playing a game where you're able to jump off a building and do a thousand tricks while landing perfectly is fun as hell. On the flip side, I enjoy basketball and follow the NBA, but I'm not interested in playing the 2K NBA games.

nostalgia isn't a factor for quality...THPS 1-4 got better with every new game and only the maps could be a reason to prefere a previous one over another (3 had the best maps IMO), but THUG was such a huge improvement to the whole series while keeping the slick mechanics that literally never felt unresponsive or clunky. The maps where much bigger but full of cleverly placed skateable environments where you could combo around the whole maps in so many different ways. I mean I get it, childhood memories and such...but as someone who's played every Tony Hawk's game until project 8 from the moment they were released, I just can't agree with anyone saying any of the pro skater games were better than THUG because they didn't replace or change any established mechanics but added some and gave much more content than in the prequels. It was only after that when they started to "smoothen up" the gameplay and adding the annoying rage bar in THUG2. I came back to THPS 3 and 4 every now and then for diversity and whatever but I've always returned to THUG to hone my skills or to just have the most fun from a TH game. THUG2 and American Wasteland were still solid but with and after Project 8 it went south really fast. Oh and please correct me if I'm wrong in one of my statements...it's been a while and maybe I forgot some superior traits about the first games, but I remember ranking them in my childhood with these arguments. Haven't played any of them for almost 10 years now

The real money came indirectly from the enormous amount of additional fame THPS brought to Tony and interest to skateboarding in general. Tony was already very famous within the world of Skateboarding, but THPS dramatically increased the size of that world and catapulted Tony into the realm of Jordan. At one point in my childhood I remember reading that Tony was indeed the second most recognizable sports figure with MJ being number one. That's pretty crazy when you think of how popular skateboarding is relative to football, basketball, baseball, soccer, etc. He deserved every penny.
