Amazing, thanks so much for this ! I'm not from a poor family, I've never been on a situation where I had nothing to eat or a place to live etc. but I had a very strong social anxiety that stopped my life for a few years and to overcome it I had to put a lot of effort (another few years) to change almost everything in my mind but now I'm very strong mentally, I know how brain works and that everything is possible. So in my opinion such negative situations can make people (people that manage to overcome it) much much stronger.

yeah, there is a certain sense of power you get once you come out of negativity, but it's just as easy to happen to fall back in the negativity hole the very next day! Also - anything is possible provided you are willing to make the sacrifices it asks of you and sometimes that is more than money. If I really wanted to work in this industry for example i would have to give up my pets, break up with my partner, move to a different country. It's a lot to do just for "the chance" to work in VFX. Therefore we look at ROI and that determines of the overall trajectory of taking on this adventure and whether its worth it. I am a poor man with everything to lose haha

Many would not like this video because we have many that like handouts, affirmative action and don't want to earn it but complain about I deserve what ever I want with little to no work! Many have no work ethic and are lazy! That is a FACT not a opinion so they don't last and start crying about I am not be treated fairly, I say no owes you anything go work for it or suffer and struggle!

Waww.... you're a motivator man. I m from a third world country. I just purchased a new laptop to learn 3d last month. Now everyday I can I go in a bar or restaurant to work for 3 hours. There is insecurity therefore I can't stay for long time. I dreamed to enter the 3D world for 3 years now. The best tutorials are in english therefore I improved my skills in that language. I had no laptop, I saved money and bought one. Because of insecurity you can't be peaceminded in the streets and state authorities don't provide electricity on a regular basis (haha). So I was...giving up and thinking about learning something more "accessible" to me. This video is like a revelation for me. I know what I got to do now. Thank you very much man. Well I'm not wealthy, but clients find me, I have never contacted a potential client. I'm doing a very niche field, calling myself a cartographic illustrator. I create maps for game publishers. I primarily create maps for tabletop roleplaying game publishers, but I also create maps for video game strategy guides, and have become my own publisher, where I create the art for author/game designers, then do page layout, cover design, be the art director and publish RPG supplements. I hope to expand to other non-gaming niches, but am fairly successful in what I do.

yes, we are in 2019 now, marketing and personal branding is 90% of success! i know a lot of good artists who are stuck on shit jobs making $20/h while others not so skilled and not talented are working as managers and sups making over 100k a year. why? because you must learn how to sell yourself.

Yep or learned to kiss a lot of ass :P But yeah I agree - it's more that there are people who do land jobs they might not be qualified for because they simply asked. Most of us are afraid to ask for what we want. I do think there's certain personality types who are not afraid to just tell people "I'm the best - give me the job". so it's not so much branding but more quirks in their personality, but those people get what they want - because they asked. I do think there's a valuable lesson there. But, the flipside - is you're you're right there are people who are so talented, and undersell themselves completely. And their employers know how valuable they are, and their worth but know the artist doesn't know this.

I actually disagree with you, I work more then 14 years. The reality is 99.5% of you all will never make 6 figures. And most 3d artists I worked with in EU make less then 15$-30$ so far what I heard even from supervisors and some studio CEOs only hand full of artist ever reach that status. Many Europeans must go to Canada, China to actually make some money which is all temporary. My highest job pay was 80k and right now while search for a job they keep asking if I want to work for less we can guarantee you 100% to get the job. They are lowering the prices every year and it's damaging this toxic industry, you cannot ask for higher only if you are a super star like Allan McKay. (highest respect for Allan) The reality is you will burn out very fast, and with low payment you will start to look for other jobs. Allan Is someone I respect and admire, and learned so much from past, bought his dvds, it actually helped me to land some movie jobs after learning Fumefx. But as everyone knows this is a job you won't be doing for very long. Earn some money and study something more safer. This industry is not safe, you will be more without jobs then with a job. Now all fumefx 3ds max guys loosing jobs as Houdini came as a death stroke nobody cares anymore about being a 3ds max, Maya artist everyone, cares about How much Houdini you can although most visual effects in 2018 that came from Houdini bandwagon looked very badly done. What I'm curious is how do you battle now this Houdini bandwagon that everyone jumped on. Last 2 years I don't remember a day at least that someone asked me if I knew Houdini? I know you been a huge 3ds max influence 10 years ago.

I've noticed that the feast and famine cycles happen quite a bit, so you have to be very lucky with timing and also get work on high end shows. Due to the hold system, if the timing is off, you don't actually know how long the booking will be, or if you get booked at all. On the other hand, if you're not working on higher end shows, you'll have trouble catching the eyes of the recruiters. I'm not sure if there's any other parallel industry where people are expected to be highly specialized (based on the software choice of the year), uproot and travel from city to city once the contract ends, and not get any sort of benefits in the process like other "stable" industries. Business 101 is actually about creating a service that has a stable flow of income, and the company HAS to be profitable. Don't want to make it sound doom and gloom, because everyone is passionate about this type of work. I do think that what Allan is talking about makes sense long term with branding and also looking at various opportunities. I definitely know that I'm going to be a lot more open in the future than I've been in the past, and make the necessary contacts to secure work from people who actually value hard work and innovation long-term.

i mean, it's on you to remain relevant and have an up to date skillset. If you see a huge trend of studios and fx houses using houdini, it's probably a good idea to start learning it in your spare time. Its similar to truck drivers who are going to be obsolete if they dont adapt to automated vehicle fleets in the next 10 years or so. look where the ball is going and adapt. every artist I know who resisted learning normal maps when the ps3 gen was getting started is no longer in the industry, and it happened again when substance designer/painter started to become the new standard for game texturing. you have to keep up with industry changes, often in your free time outside of work.

Software Dev/Automation guy took a passion to side things for Indie small projects, and jsut VFX willing to admit I could net 30k/year side stuff on 14-16 hours a week repairing what people can't fix via unity/unreal/blender/Maya products. This is roughly $36/hour 3 years later with 1 year of 3dfx home grown knowled. Also, Turning down bad work is the hardest decision here. My Big jobs came from jobs not worth doing and many refuse to admit that's even a thing.

Nowadays working in a professional studio you wont become rich at all aswell as that you have to stand out from the rest oversaturation of employees wanting to be the best. Working for yourself and being self taught all online is what truly matters and will net you more income (freelance, contract) but be prepared to work your ass off. Thats why many studios try to outsource their projects nowadays. I'd advise skipping the "getting into a triple A studio" part but if you want to go that route then do it but be realistic but personally for me not interested in the studio thing. I havent worked in a studio but from what iv read, researched, seen, the state of the economy and the competition, (office politics is a thing too) its definitely not easy.

So you're saying triple a studios don't pay well? Big studios typically realize if they want good talent they have to pay for it or that talent will go to their competitors. So unless you're saying big studios who do most of the big work in the world only hire junior or sub par artists so they can not pay them much, even though they're bidding on the biggest movies that have pretty respectable budgets (movie budgets aren't getting cheaper they're expanding every year, and I have to say studios like Netflix and Amazon pay extremely well sometimes even 1-2 million per episode of tv for VFX, which was unheard of a decade ago). When though budgets are increasing so they have the ability to budget right, they are choosing to just hire subpar artists so they can pay them very little? That's a really interesting insight. I love when people choose to just say everything sucks and you can't make money Right now this will during quarantine I'm earning a little over 3k per day freelancing.. for.. those.. dreaded big studios... Ugh.. you're so right... Big studios don't pay ... I guess your advice is spot on Sorry to be harsh just it's a quitting mentality to just say everything sucks so I won't even try When there's more work than ever in 2020, and actually for once studios have the budgets to pay people properly So when I hear people saying there's no work or there's no money It makes me wonder what on Earth you are doing to manage your business besides complaining and blaming "the big studios" for all your problems When like I said, any smart studio is not going to pay little too retain talent when that talent can just walk over to the next studio if there aren't being compensated fairly There's no shortage of work

Number one expense in any business is...... Wait for it........ LABOR Allan is way off the mark. Just because he's making 780,000 per year, does not mean everyone's gonna make even a tenth of that! GTFO Sure, you can get into a AAA studio. Chances are you'll be "chopping wood" for the industry standard pay. Depending on where in the world you are, could be as little as 8 bucks per hour. And studios often hire interns, meaning zero pay. So a FREELANCER is saying there's more money than ever in the studios. As if that money somehow trickles down. GTFO You're not sought after if you are a worker. There's always someone better than you just clamoring for that position. You have to freelance to be sought after. You're not gonna be wined and dined as a low tier wood chopper at UbiSoft. You have to be the NEXT UbiSoft.

awesome vid man. As someone who is 100% self taught, I think with the right tactics you can easily make a decent income as an artist. focusing on mastering a skillset is so important, and building an audience while you are doing that will really help you too. I get a TON of job offers each month simply based off the fact I put out youtube content and people in studios randomly come across it. Plus if you have a side hustle you can suppliment your income pretty well. Lets say you make 80k a year at a studio gig, make some tutorials or asset packs, and you could probably pretty easily make another 20k in semi-passive income. making 100k a year doing what you enjoy is not bad at all. I will take that over 200k stuck in some financial or law job I would be miserable at. happiness over currency, especially once you get past 50k a year.

Hi Aquib, you don't have to know math and physics to be a good FX artist. Typically if you want to go that path it can help at certain studios but it's not a requirement. Having some scripting and math is definitely a good idea though. Just basic trigonometry and also Python are a good starting point. Hope that helps!

It’s funny but I experience the opposite. I see people trying and hustling but just can’t get the jobs. I see issues with this industry and the lack of effort is apparent but I see that as the minority. There are far more issues with this industry than people not trying. It’s not excuses, it’s a fact that this industry is harder than it should be.

Correct. It's not excuses, it's the vfx company owners being greedy, cutting their losses and letting go of talent for months just to try to rehire again later, hoping for cheaper and cheaper artists to apply

Yes there is a crap ton of money in ART. Just look at Disney's stock. (even during the Pandemic). And yeah it might seem like a terrible example at first glance because you are looking at an international Mega corporation. Here's the key though: MOST artists are TERRIBLE at business, not only terrible, but it's not even in their radar, and while admit that you don't get into art to get rich, even just making a decent living is hard enough, but it's because artists are easily taken advantage of.

@@austinjoseph8849 I can list a dozen careers where people work overtime from time to time. I think a lot of people hype up how everyone in art are victims of evil employers. Sure like any industry there might be some bad eggs, but just like any other industry you also need to work OT to meet deadlines. Lawyers I think have far worse hour's and less appreciation by their employers. I don't think anyone is out to take advantage of artists on some global scale. I've done plenty of overtime and worked plenty of game studios, but I haven't really seen anyone trying to take advantage of me or really see that many evil employers out there. I'd say if someone is working somewhere that is a toxic environment, then to either address it with their employer or they can find a place that isn't toxic. Unless you're saying every game studio on the planet is toxic?

You mean you are 14 years old? I started when I was 14, I don't see why age would ever hold you back. Rather get you ahead. I would just focus on working online first since then age doesn't play a factor. Best of luck!

@@AllanMcKay Yep some of it :). But I personally found that is better to have "real" product instead of selling a service. So I take my 3D art as tool to sell my product better, and more effective then others. Service has its limits (even if you have a company) , more limits when you are alone, and you are freelancer. You have just 8-15 hours when you can work on order. If you have good product, you can sell thousands pieces of it , even when you are sleeping. But its about what you want :)

Sincerely, the services industry is a bit hard to enter, but you can apply your design skills to a product and be a worthy competitor. You can then use your own product as a portfolio to get those design jobs that come once in a while.

@@fe6686 if you want to do 3d or VFX I don't think you should ever get a diploma. I wouldn't encourage you to drop out of school necessarily, purely for the life experience of being to be around friends and have some fun during those times. If you were to drop out then so be it, jump start your career and get ahead. But I do think there's a lot of value in being at school just for the fun, memories and relationships you build during that time I don't feel the are many colleges that teach 3D at the level that you could just learn for free online. Short paid courses from people in the industry I do recommend - I spend 75k-100k a year on learning but on specific information I want to absorb. A diploma will not get you a job, nobody when hiring someone cares what school you went to. They just care that you can do the job. Many people go to school, learn nothing and then have student debt for many years to come - and they realize typically they learned more on KZbin or by themselves than they ever did at school. I have a video on my KZbin on this exact subject and another one I'll be publishing soon But your reel and relationships are what will get you the job, not any certificate or college Hope that helps!
