Hi Akiyama, I grew up in Switzerland, so French was always everywhere around me. On TV, on billboards etc., but I only started learning it properly in school from the age of around 10. Then later on we started English in school around the age of 15.

Thanks so much for the comment, Marco. Will definitely address this in the next Q&A or a separate upcoming video. In short, my two currently biggest clients simply contacted me on LinkedIn to start with. But of course, I needed other ones before in order to stand out on LinkedIn. This shows that every client and every job counts however small they are. I had the major advantage of knowing lots of people in the industry through my studies. More on that as well in a video coming soon :)

I wish someone had told me this in my youth: think of it this way: a junior employee in an IT company can make around 2500 EUR per month after all deductions and maybe 500-1000 more every couple of years, whether he's busy or not. Can you make the same or more and enjoy the same living standard (marriage, home loan, kids)? Will your business grow? Will others do the work for you? If not, get a regular day job, translation is still OK on the side.

Luckily there is no cap when youre self employed. There is nothing in your way to make 5-10k EUR a month. It is definitely possible without too much stress :)

I don't want to be a freelancer, since I will pay a lot of staff for my insurance and taxes. Do you think that there is an option to be hired as an employee by an agency? Is it worth? Hi Rowaa, literature translation is very hard to get into and make a decent living. I made a Specialized episode on Literary, you should check it out. It's definitely a great field to have as a goal, but in the beginning you're better off with making money and building a portfolio in other fields

Hi Merve, thanks for the support!! :) yes it is definitely wise. It's completely normal business practice to ask for references don't worry. This will not reflect negatively on you. On the contrary, it will show the client that they are very important and trustworthy to you. I have seen an improvement in client relationships after I had asked them for references :) just go ahead!

Hi there, I personally don't have that issues. Most of my customers pay in Euro to my Euro account. One pays in CHF, and my bank automatically created a CHF account within my bank account, so that goes on there. And some pay in USD, but they pay through PayPal so there's no issue either :)

The Asian cultures, especially Japan, has always been of particular interest to me. I love to travel, and be my own boss. I think translating fits in with a lot of my values, when it comes to living the life I want to live. I go to a local university, here. Hi Andrew, thanks so much for you detailed comment, I appreciate your time. Apps like Duolingo and Babbel are definitely a good start. I can also recommend to watch the content from fellow KZbinr Sarah K. She used to make translation related content, now it's more about Japanese culture and learning Japanese language. Maybe you can follow her course. As a next step, I'd recommend to take in-person classes once the pandemic allows it. It's just so much more valuable when you can actually learn with peers and you're in an unusual setting. Then I know from all the Japanese speakers I know, that you can only get it to a level at which you can work with it as a translator when you go to Japan and live there in a host familiy for couple of months or a year. So if you're really serious about it, I'd recomment that :) Afterwards there's nothing stopping you from becoming the best JP>EN translator! Adrian

Hi Lars, I don't think it matters at all. In fact, sometimes it can be an advantage because you don't need to deal with the generally quite high costs of living in German-speaking countries.

I confirm that you get most easily hired for nishes exotic languages. I still find cat tools difficult after 1 year and it takes some years to just gain experience. 1 year I was constantly hunting translation projects limited to one hour or 2 days and was forced to teach. At least it added up to my CV until the list got longer and longer. Still many international companies won't hire me with until 2 years experience it's a field that demands patience and persistence and to try out different approaches

I work for an agency that does all the admin work and calculates the discounts on fuzzy matches and repetitions ranges based on the full per-word rate. Do you use a CAT tool that does this job or do you just charge the full per-word rate without discounts for fuzzy matches?

Hi Claudio, thanks for the comment. It depends a lot on the client. For some agencies, I also have to do that. For others not. For direct clients, this generally doesn't happen.

Whatever CAT tool the client uses I use for that. You can make these types of calculations with any tool.

Hi Aiko, a proofreading can either be a correction/review of someone elses translation or it can be a correction/review of someone elses original copy. In other words, you are correcting a text and make it publishable.

I think that most of the time, people underestimate themselves thus, they accept low rates. It's good to know that you may have a very decent salary from your translation job

Yes, underestimating is definitely a culprit, and then it's so hard to get out of it, because it's hard to raise your rates once you started too low.

@@Justastranger11 It depends on you. You can be fluent in 5 years too or 5 months too. I became fluent in Mandarin in just 6 months. Depends on the grasping ability of each individual.

I am a PhD nuclear scientist and grew up bilingual. I work as scientist and translate as a side job (english to german). Recently, I passed the CIOL DipTrans exam. Still, I dont have many clients and dont make very much money with it. I tried to contact agencies, but they want that I use Trados, which costs again quite a sum. Well, translating is fun (that’s why i do it) but its hard to find clients and make money. Even with my qualifications. But maybe i do something wrong

Oh wow that is amazing, a nuclear scientist watching my videos lol ;) anyways, you have the perfect disposition to become very successful because you can specialize in nuclear science. There aren't many nuclear science German translators out there for sure. So don't give up! You can use Trados trial license with different email addresses by the way, the client doesn't need to know that. Once you found a few clients, you can decide to invest in buying it.

Sir I am from India and I have studied Russian and English. I am planning to learn Spanish. I never did freelance work but when I open the freelance websites they usually write ' Native Russian Speaker Needed' Native Spanish Speaker Needed. I am from India, not native. So will it affect how much work I get in my non native languages? Will I be able to earn roughly the same as you mentioned or its not same for non-native speakers? Because all of the languages I want to work in are non-native. English Russian Spanish. Please do reply, I am eagerly waiting.

Hi Reuven, you can charge as much as you want and need :) video translations you mean subtitles? It depends so much on what you have to do actually. Do you have to write the transcript? do you have to spot the subtitles? do you translate the transcript? do you spot the translations onto the video? See there are so many possible steps in this workflow. I would just charge it by the hour with your hourly rate.

@@Freelanceverse hello and I'm so glad you answered me. The video is sent to me via email and it's about teaching a lesson. The teacher talks and talks a lot reviewing the lesson and explaining certain elements concerning the subject. What I do is practically follow the teacher and simultaneously record the whole 1-hour lesson plus the question-answer. It is practically a simultaneous interpretation only we aren't virtually or in-person present. I can have the luxury of pausing and making it simultaneously. Although it looks like a piece of cake the last recording from English to Spanish of a 1-hour length took me over 5 hours. That was because of the diction of this person, the not too good audio, the number of words this person spike, and at times very fast and an increment of her screechy tone when she got excited and interrupted by questions, and at the end a conversation about the subjects with her supervisor, then review it. Now, I think you have a better understanding of the scenario. I'm sorry for not being clear and probably I'm out of place here because this isn't a real translation but an interpretation. Would kindly let me know your opinion? Best regards, Reuven.

@@Reuvenification I see, then definitely charge by the hour for interpretation. So just think to yourself what you need and want per hour (let's say 50 USD for example). Now you know that 1h takes you 5h of work, so 1 video hour costs the client 250 USD. Hope this makes sense

At 16:28, You speciically mention, "Even when translation goes under, we all know that..." Is that actually the truth? Is translation a dying profession? is it just a matter of time until AI logarithms and other forms of computer technology replaces us in this field? Please elaborate on that. It would be very interesting to hear your point of view in reards to this ominent observation, which I myself think is the truth as well. I do see the constant development and enhancement of translation technology. They even use us, human translators, to help develop their translation technology (Appen.com and others...) Will it one day become so accurate that it will replace us as humans alltogether? If so, do you think this will occur in the short term or long term? Thank you for the video. I just subscribed. Very good and VALUABLE content. I hate it how these youtubers simply don't know anything about making money online, yet they make these videos with deceiving headings talking about how you can make all this money online when they themselves haven't looked into any of the websites or industries which they are promoting. Hi David, first of all, thanks so much for your compliment. I try to be real and relatable because it's exactly what I was missing from KZbin with regards to translation :) so thanks for acknowledging that, means a lot. To your question about AI taking our job: this is an incredibly difficult question to answer as you can imagine. I'm actually working on compiling data for such a video, but it takes a lot of research and preparation. Hopefully, it will come out sometime in April/May :) The short answer is: yes, inevitably, one day we will be replaced as conventional translators. However, it's important to realize that this applies to every kind of profession. What happens at the same time though is that the language industry will adapt and so will our profession. Think about the 90s, noone could have imagined a translator's profession in the computer age, yet we adapted and now it's normal. As long as we are not scared to go with whatever happens (and not be opposed to change), we will be fine. I'm moving away from calling myself a translator into the direction of being a language professional/specialist or language service provider, because language services will be needed in one form or the other. There was more data generated in the past 2 years than in all the years of humanity before combined. This means that it would be literally impossible to translate all this data by humans. It's a matter of use cases, some use cases need instant translation with little focus on quality (like social media), other use cases need high quality, highly visible human translation for at least 20 more years. I'd just give you the advice to go with the flow, don't be scared, learn about post editing, expand your services from translation to other services like transcreation (maybe even copywriting), subitling, editing etc. and you should be fine.

0.10 EUR for a word? I work with a very rare language pair, and EU, US and Asian agencies are reluctant to go above 0.04 EUR. I do 650+ words an hour, over 15 years of experience in my field of specialization. 😤

@@Freelanceverse it's a very 3rd world country language, but still I do high profile global web service translations, where it's a matter of prestige to have as many languages covered as possible. In case of languages such as mine, there are at least two intermediaries involved - one in direct contact with the client, and a regional agency distributing tasks to translators. I don't have the same cost of living as colleagues in EU, but still, it takes the same amount of time and effort to do research and study as anywhere else. That's why I prefer interpreting over translating.
