In this video, I will try to answer one of the most common questions I get: How much money do interpreters make? Can you make a decent living as an interpreter?
Well, if you watch this video you’ll have a pretty good idea of what are the current rates offered for US-based interpreters for different assignments and the potential income that this profession has to offer.
Keep in mind that this is not comprehensive - meaning, this does not include all possible rates and salaries that are offered in the universe and I am not advocating in favor or against any of the rates or salaries currently offered.

My aunt has been interpreting for about 10 years. She started making $50/hr as a medical interpreter while she waited for the results of the exam for court interpretation. Once she started for the courts, she started at $75/hr and currently makes $90/hr. She is now going back to get licensed for federal courts so she can ask for $150/hr. We are in the Bay Area in California.

I would think that interpreting legal testimony would be especially demanding in not only using the correct vocabulary but making sure you precisely communicate the exact thoughts, sentiments, and actions of the speaker or the referred subject. The intent of the accused at the time of the alleged violation is often critical.

I was working in manufacturing (a dead-end job) and had never crossed my mind to work as an interpreter. I've been an introvert and thought my English pronunciation wasnt that great. I was told about a bilingual/liaison position at a school. Decided to give it a shot and applied. Made it through the interview and despite zero experience, I've survived. My first interpretation during a family meeting was hard and almost failed. There was a lot of vocabulary that I had never translated/interpreted to Spanish before and my memory retention when interpreting was poor. Anyway, thanks to youtube I've found a lot of videos to practice from and after a few weeks have developed some note-taking techniques and improved my memory retention. Also, listening to radio programs and podcasts and repeating everything has helped me dremendously with listening and memory retention. I am happy where I work now, not only I get pay way better with all benefits, but I get to help my community. I still have a lot to work on to master the technique but only with time and practice it will become natural.

My first interpretation was a similar experience. I was taking botes(thankfully, some people where speaking non-stop😂) however, I also struggled with the vocabulary.

Great information. I found that with freelancing I grossed around 90-110k per year before expenses. Courts in Southern California pay more between 80-90k per year, plus the benefit packages. Yearly benefits are worth around 20k. And something else to note is that as a court employee you are not overworked one bit. There is a lot of downtime. You need books, podcasts, games, etc to be able to go through the day because they become lengthy. There were days where I didn't interpret one single second. I slowly made my way into translations and transcriptions and now comfortable gross the court salary per year (86k) + 25-40k per year from those translations/transcriptions. I don't transcribe/translate outside of work hours so I make all this Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm.

Conference interpreting is a whole different thing. I do both. However, as a general rule, the rates are double what you have mentioned for CI, plus there is no such a thing as an hourly rate nor half day rate. It's a full day rate wether you're working for 15mn or 5 hours conference. Other information you mentioned about CI are accurate.

Hi Sahal! Thank you for being here. So, every company is different therefore it's a bit hard to give you a specific answer. Some companies offer a full-time job and pay you by the hour, regardless of how many calls you take. Other companies give you a contract and you log in/log out and you get paid by the minute based on the calls you get. A new modality I am seeing is also shifts/+minutes where you take shifts and work a certain number of hours and they pay you a base rate per hour (stand-by rate) and on top of that, they pay you per minute for the calls you get. I know all of this may sound confusing but the thing is there are different modalities in place so it's best to ask a lot of questions whenever you are negotiating a job or contract with a company. I totally understand you 🥺 It has been a little too long and still no word about when we can expect the exams to resume in CA, or at least not that I know of. I just visited Prometrics's website and the information hasn't been updated in months. What I've heard other colleagues are doing is going to a neighboring state to take the test and then request reciprocity in California. If it's feasible, that may be an option to get certified as soon as possible and bypass the wait.

Excellent question! Typically, if you get a per-minute rate, you get paid for every minute you spend on a call. The time you spend idle waiting for calls is not paid. I hope this helps!

You are so kind! Thank you!!! Yes, I moved to the US when I was almost 30. I grew up in a Spanish-speaking country and never took formal English classes. To improve your fluency and accent I would say, talk a lot! talk to your self, to the mirror, to other people (of course! lol), read aloud different types of texts and do shadowing (listening to a recording in English and repeating what they say). Those were the things that I feel helped me the most and are still helping me. Try it!

Hi, Sandra! Thanks for being here all the way from Peru! As far as I know, you do not need to be a US citizen to work in most of these positions. The majority do require candidates to be legally authorized to work in the US (either by being a permanent resident or having a work permit) and I know there are other companies who offer remote interpretation services that contract interpreters from overseas as well. Hello, Rosa Im a freshman in college and I don't like the career i have chosen as a biologist. Since young I was always the person in my family to translate. Even if my translations are not well polished. My question is can I still apply to become an interpreter without an associates degree or will i have to take certain courses to become an interpreter?

Hi Lisa! It depends on the field where you want to interpret and the type of interpretation you want to do. Some companies hire remote interpreters without experience or degrees and they provide you with training. To become a court interpreter, for example, most states do not require a degree, they just test you on your skills but it's hard to pass the tests if you don't have the right training. For medical interpreting - if you want to become certified - you need to take at least a 40-hr course, but right now it is not a mandatory requirement nationwide (USA) to be certified to work in the field although more and more companies now tend to require it.

Hi! Thanks so much for sharing your question. So, Bridging the Gap offers a training in medical interpreting. Once you complete the course you get a certificate - which is not the same as a certification - confusing, I know! So, basically that certificate only says that you completed the course. Now, a certification program - which is what CCHI / NBCMI offer - is something different. It's a whole process where you have to: 1) Register by submitting documentation that proves your command of both languages, your educational background, training (like the one you took with Bridging the Gap), etc. 2) Pass a written test to prove you have knowledge of medical terminology, ethics and standards of practices related to medical interpreting, etc. 3) Pass an oral test to prove your interpreting skills. It is not mandatory to have a certification to work as an interpreter. Some companies require if that is their preference but it is not established as something mandatory across the board. Thank you. Some of these rates are so much less than I make an hour as a surgical technologist. But I’m trying to work from home and leaving the OR. I’ve finished my 60 hour interpreting course and registering for test. One of the prerequisites is to show language I’m not sure what or how to prove this. What is it ?

Hi Jenny! Interpreting offers a lot of opportunities to work from home so I'm sure with your background you'll have no problem finding one. About language proficiency, if you have a diploma (high school or college) from an institution where you took classes in that language (English or another language) that can serve as proof of language proficiency. Now, if you are missing a diploma in one of your languages, you'll have to take what is called a "language proficiency test" and both NBCMI and CCHI have a list of language proficiency tests that they accept and the minimum scores that you need to get. Hi! That's a great point! I would not say it's easy, but it's obviously doable. I have helped other colleagues get started, and my recommendation is to try to find a job with a company that offers training. The pay is usually lower since those are entry-level jobs, but it's one way to get started without experience and to get proper training. Other colleagues have started doing internships or volunteer work while they complete their training to gain experience that way.

I have a BA in Translation and Interpretation Studies and I'm thinking about signing up for an online 40-hours course to get certified. My question is: how easy (or difficult) is it to get through the certification exams of the National and/or the International board/s? And how easy (or difficult) is it to really find a job opportunity as a medical interpreter after you've done the training and passed the exams? I don't want to waste almost 600€ on a course that's going to lead me nowhere, and I'd like to know how realistic it'd be for me to embark on this path. Ramos buen dia, me llamo Giovanni, oyes busca el sitio de internet en Google San Diego State University Global Campus en California, puedes mandarles un correo electronico y normalmente te contestan en unos dias, esa universidad tiene un programa de Interpretes Medicos y de las cortes de Justicia, de 9 meses pero se puede hacer en 5 meses todo por online la certificacion en aparte y investiga si lo podrias tomar como extranjero oh si tendrias que applicar para una Visa de trabajo primero con la embajada. por lo que yo a investigado normalmente se les paga mejor alos interpretes de cortes de Justicia en EE.UU. y mayormente California tiene el saldo mas alto para interpretes medicos oh de las cortes de Justicia pero ala vez tambien vivir en California es uno de los estados mas costoso para vibir en todo EE.UU. pero todo depende de que area oh condado que vivas.espero esto te ayude. animo y suerte👍

From my experience, most training courses will prepare you with everything you need to pass the exams, assuming you do your part and really study the material, have an excellent good command of both languages, and practice. Hi! That’s a great question! I hope other colleagues can chime in! I’m away from the office now so I can’t double check with my tax records, but I guesstimate in my case it’s about 20% of the net.

Hi Sahal! It varies a lot per person and per language. In my case (Spanish), I don't know the average in general, but I can tell you that I work about 50 hours per week so ~200 hours per month. I'm not sure what would be considered average for Somali interpreters but I hope if other colleagues read this message they can help us out with that.

I live in Argentina, Buenos Aires and the job offers are terrible, 3.50 to 6 Us the hour, companies from USA or from Latin America to work for USA. Thanks Natalia! I wish I could be of more help but I'm based in the US and I'm not familiar with the recruiting practices for interpreters based outside of the US. I think your idea of contacting other potential employers is a good one. A quick online search should help you create a list of companies and then it would just take some time and work for you to reach out to them individually to find out if they're hiring interpreters based in Argentina. It's all relative. Those numbers are from the USA which is where I'm based and where the cost of living is considerably higher than in many other countries.

Hi, Johanna! Thanks for being here. FYI, what I've shared is not based on my rates. Part of the information is based on national averages, advertised pay rates from different entities, and actual employment offers. Depending on the state/field where you work, these can seem low or high.

BS, they don't pay enough, all money goes to the agencies and you will get exploited. There is a lot of competition as well!

I agree with your point of view (in part). I've worked across different states and yes, in some markets/fields the interpreter is at a disadvantage :( In my experience, becoming certified helped make a difference to increase my income, but yes, overall, for all we have to learn and invest to be able to do this, we deserve better.
