I am in California, Los Angeles area. I grossed 120k. I flag a minimum of 120hrs every 2 weeks. I am lucky enough to work at an extremly busy dealer. I am a MDT for toyota, and I work on anything, one day I can be replacing a block, the next day I'll replace a headliner. I'm not scared of anything. My favorite work is diagnosing but I'll do anything. Tips for people to make more money is diagnose more, it just gets easier and easier, trust me.

But that's the problem, how does one get to "diagnose more" when the older/senior techs don't want to teach the newer/younger techs? It's a never ending cycle of failure within the automotive field and the field is loosing more techs year after year because of the lack of growth and learning opportunities, along with pay.

Started @ Hyundai straight out of college making $34500yr salary. Left there to work for an independent shop for $48000yr. Left that place to pursue another independent shop that offered $35hr flat rate and swore that I would get 50-70hrs a per week, HUGE mistake. The first week only 3 cars came into the parking lot. After a few months there I noticed the senior tech there averaged about 25hrs a week. Took the opportunity to use the slow work situation to get my degree in CNC designing, programming and machining. Started my own business as a mechanic/machinist. Set for life.

Here in central Texas recently started working at a Honda dealer as an apprentice late last year. Start pay was 15/hr while you learn the ropes of being an express tech. When they feel like your ready they make you a tech and start flagging. I’m flagging now at 20/hr after being an apprentice. Thankfully this dealer is pretty big and has a lot of customer come and go since the customer service is great. On average my by-weekly pay check is 1500 after taxes with an average of 75 to 80 hours flagged. For someone who worked in the fast food industry before this is way better. There is a lot of room to move up and make more money. They also pay you for doing classes to become ASE certified or Honda master tech. Hopefully this information is useful for anyone else young like me that doesn’t want to go to college and wants learn about cars and get paid for doing so.

Wages for mechanics in the Philippines, regardless of your certification, is 600pesos per day... Thats roughly $12usd per day... Started off as a Toyota Tech then became a Toyota Pro-Tech expecting a good raise but it's very different here. After a year, decided to try as a Toyota Service Advisor and live off the commision. Worked for a while but inflation due to the pandemic really screwed everything up. Waiting on my Visa to get back to the US and hopefully find a fleet tech or fleet supervisor job. To reduce the echo, you can do the following low-cost solutions: 1: unroll a large rug on the floor just when you record (does not have to be under you, and the fuzzier the better). 2: put some kind of fabric material on the ceiling and/or walls (the fuzzier the better). 3: Put use a directional, cardioid mic. 4: Move the mic closer to you or use a lapel mic. (Fabric materials that resist air being blown through it are NOT as good as the opposite. The fabric should be quite porous.)

I work as a automotive technician for Valvoline instant oil change. Work for metrolube (franchisee of Valvoline) in central florida area. Started in June of 2021 at $13 an hour, and got promoted to certified technician, which is just a $0.50 cent raise. The title on my resume is what I like most (an extra dollar every two hours is kinda meh but better than nothing). I’ve earned good money over the summer, and am working part time (a mere 3 days a week) to earn some cash while going to school. Wanted to be a mechanic as a kid, and have learned some much despite starting off with no trade/tech school. Tools are provided (as with most lube shops). Although my long-term career ambitions have changed, I still love being a mechanic greatly. Will happily answer any questions if you have them about where I work, tips, etc.

started july 2021 as an express tech at VW at $16.50/hr as an hourly tech. usually work 40-45 hours a week, so take home pay is 550-600 a week. this is in the tri-state area. Not worth it IMO as a lifelong career, especially getting started as a 28 year old, but it is a great job to do while I study in my off time. my schedule is the same every week so I can set up a reliable study schedule, then when I can finally get a job after my studies are complete, I walk away with knowledge of auto mechanics, which is priceless.

Flat rate tech from the nw ga area. Been in the business 5 going on 6 years, 1 year as a Lube/tire tech at a wholesale shop. I made a little over 60k this past year. Packed up and jumped to a new shop and new brand, I should be on track to make $80k this year. I was averaging 65 hours a week so 130 hours every two weeks at $20/hour (severely underpaid ik). Plenty of money to make in this industry if your motivated enough, however it definitely takes a toll physically as well as mentally.

So I just found this channel and have been on a watching binge. Regarding taxes, I would strongly encourage anyone who can go independent to do so. Form an LLC and now all of your expenses are business tax educatable. Your tools, your travel to a job, your business insurances, advertising your business, etc. Instead of paying taxes on that 84k you would know pay on the 60k saving you about $7,000 a year (Fed and Ca tax if single) Being a high earning W2 worker is the worst place to be as far as taxes. Great channel.

In some cases yes. But even getting good work. Still takes good work ethic to continue grinding hours. I see a lot of people complain about not getting gravy. Then they get a gravy 8hr ticket and spend 8hrs on it because they don’t care about flagging high hours.

Just started off last week as a Lube Tech at Toyota in South Carolina. I make $20/hour first month, then I'll switch to $20 flat rate after the first month. I think our dealership starts off people at $18/hr / flat rate for lube techs, but I asked for slightly higher pay due to 8 months experience as a technician with Amazon; 3 years total with Amazon. Our minimum wage is $7.25, but the cost of living in some parts of South Carolina are growing exponentially while there isn't many Toyota dealerships in my area; so I believe this adds to the higher than usual pay.

I have screenshots of my pay and it was higher before CS but I also ran HARD when I drove (I ran the Northeast and still averaged over 3200 miles a week…run at night and split your sleeper). These are good numbers tbh (your pay stubs). Glad i saw this video and you being candid about it. I think I saw a video about you getting your Class A license so I thought I would share. The top paid Tech was at $28 a flat rate hour, but he usually didn’t make more than 80 hours a pay period. I would usually flag about 120-150 hours a pay period, however I would work 6 days a week. Management kept lowering the flat rate pay for us after the sewer was sold saying we were “getting too quick” to charge. This resulted in people leaving Love the trade though

Flat rate for toyota just starting out here in nc. Express line. NOT express + 17.50/hr. First month by myself i only made 8hrs in a 12 hour shift working as hard as i could. Now i generally hit the 12 hour mark every day. MY MAIN TIP for someone just starting out is PLAN OUT SERVICES. As a lube tech your going to do the same thing over and over and over again. Write down at home what needs to be done, then figure out how you can be most efficient at every service you do. I dont have to work as hard to make 12hrs rn compared to making 8hrs back then.

Year passed by I said fts and went to heavy duty diesel and started at 23$ hourly now (1 year later) raised to 27.50$ an hour and can get 2$ more for Heavy duty ases Yeah I won’t make 100k but if I work later I get my time and a half vs working late with flat rate you’re just working more I don’t need to worry if I snap the head off a bolt and have to burn an hour extracting I get paid the same and they want the job done right plus benefits were wayyyyyy better and I have a 401 and a Roth things that dealerships skimp on that matter to the single guys later in life Another big benefit is no furloughing No worrying about slow times for pay It’s constant and the check never bounces if you’re with a city or major corporation like soda (where Im at)

At most places where it's owner operated and needs a helper you're lucky to make 50k from my experience at least. With the governor signing a bill that requires new vehicles will have to be all electric (I'd doubt it but we'll see) after 2035 I still have a decade and change before the smog program ends and I'll probably go back to school as I don't see myself wrenching since I already make more without the backbreaking labor.
