I have just come back from the GCN Avoriaz event and thoroughly enjoyed it once I got used to the altitude. All the presenters were very friendly and happy to talk about their every day lives and racing careers. The ride leaders were all locals so had good knowledge of the area and the coaching from the Spokes coaches was invaluable to me to help me tackle climbs of a length I'd never done before. The event was well organised and they even went as far as arranging for the route for the KOM on the Sunday to be closed to cars (it's a shame I came last on the KOM with a time of 22 mins :-( ). The social side of the event was great fun as well and it turns out that the presenters are real party animals. It surprised me how all the guests and GCN team became a really close knit team and everyone was very supportive of each other. I highly recommend the event and will definitely be signing up for another one.

Long story short, this person went to buy a camper, deciding not to buy it went home with the money somewhere on the vehicle and it somehow blew off not even realizing they were missing it. Yes I did give it back thanks to the check book, and I learned much more was lost, a total of $6000 was scattered all along the highway i did not see. They went back and found $2000 more and I'm not sure about the rest. They were fairly grateful.

@caffeineau5 жыл бұрын
@@MM-vu8xh The bike has a USB port, which can save your workout stats to a USB stick, so I opened up the case, and noticed that the USB stuff is handled by a daughter board with an Atmel AT90USB647 on it. It appeared that the main PCB was connected to the TWI pins of the daughter board, so I put an oscilloscope on the clock and data lines between the main PCB and the daughter board and saw what looked like i2c communications going between the two boards. I then grabbed a spare ARM board I had (the Teensy 3.5 in the picture) and programmed it to sniff the i2c comms. I then rode the bike whilst simultaneously recording to USB and sniffing the i2c. I then synchronised the two recordings and decoded the comms between the two boards. So now I had a real-time stream of the workout data. I then ordered a bluetooth module that had an embedded ARM chip. It was 3.3V only whereas the spin bike outputs 5V. A resistor divider didn't work as it loaded the pins too much and the spin bike threw an error, so I plumbed in a line driver/buffer chip that also did level conversion (74ALS541 for those interested) I programmed the ARM chip to decode the i2c and present a Bluetooth low energy 'Fitness machine' service using the 'Indoor Bike' characteristic. The bike now appears as a source of speed, power, heart rate, cadence and calories consumed. I've tried it with zwift and kinomap and it works perfectly! It didn't work as FTMS with RGT so I also supported the 'Cycling Power' and 'Cycling Speed and Cadence' services. RGT likes that but doesn't allow connections to both services at once (I put a support ticket into RGT and it's an ongoing discussion) Next step is to support the fitness machine control point protocol, so that apps can control the resistance on the bike, but Zwift doesn't support that through BLE FTMS yet, it does through ANT FEC, which my Bluetooth module also supports, but that's a lot of work to change over.

Maybe opera singers should get paid the same as pop singers...or altos as much as sopranos... Forcing an end 'equality' creates a ridiculous, burocratic tyrrany. Creating an equal playing field on which all of us can do our best and arrive wherever we may is freedom. Life is messy with no guarantee. Sport is entertainment. Trying to force a system of equal pay inspite of unequal viewership/entertainment value would be unfair. However, paying doctors or chemists (whether female or male) the same for the same service is fair.

as i understand it, the rule of thumb for tennis has generally been that a player will make around 10 times their prize money in off court earnings i.e. sponsorships, etc ... so roger fereder as at July 9, 2019 (thanks forbes); $7.4 million in prize money and $86 million in endorsements and serena williams as at June 10, 2019; $4.2 million in prize money and $25 million in endorsements in the top 100 of the world's highest paid athletes, federer ranked #5 and serena was the top woman at #65 ... didn't see any cyclists on the list but #100 was a cricketer (virat kohli) at $25 million ...
@petergriffin25135 жыл бұрын
As I understand it, in the major tennis tournaments, women split the prize money with the men. So, even though men play best of five, and women play best of three, they earn the same prize money. I think that actually means that women are paid more in the majors, despite the fact that men draw larger audiences. I don’t really believe a solution to pay disparity in sports is to take money from the men’s side and give it to the women. The audience drives how much athletes get paid in any sport. If men don’t generate an audience in a particular sport, they will not succeed. I believe the same should be the case for women. That’s actual equality.

Pro cyclists income would be I imagine made up of a base wage, bonuses and endorsements. It would be good if the examples you gave you broke it down. Also when touring they are fed and not having to pay for food which is an extra financial perk. Also when quoting Euros tell us what the average income is so we can compare. But still, they are doing what they love and travelling the world. Thats a plus. Negative is a lot of time away from family

So basically like MotoGP or F1 were salaries far outstrip any prize money. It use to be (it may still be) that riders gave all the prize money they won (intermediate sprints, mountain tops, stage wins) to the other riders in their team without whom they probably wouldn't have won it. When Fabio Casartelli died in a crash on the Tour in 95 his team announced that all their winnings on the next day would go to his widow. After that announcement the organizers tripled the prize money for that day and all other teams held back and let his team take all the money winning points.

If people want women to make as much money as men in sports, than simply, go watch their games. Athletes overall are payed based on what they bring in, and women sports games/races do not get the viewership or attendance of the men's equivalent. It isn't reasonable for a woman to make as much money as a man if they don't bring in the same revenue. So again to reiterate my point, go watch their races, games, etc. if you want change.

This makes it impossible for him to do very high intensity intervals and has put him off cycling a bit. He now wants to get fit again for three days riding in the Ardennes in September with our cycling clubs. What kind of training can he do (with his heart rate limit) to get back in shape (and do okay on some climbs)?

When talking about money in sports... Most of the time the differences in earning stems from the amount of interest (or lack there of) from general public and sponsors (which is a consequence of the first). The more people are interested, watch tv/online broadcasts, attend events the more sponsors events have/will have. Greater audience means more merchandising opportunities there are and more money can be invested. The same goes for football, basketball and pretty much all the other sports. I am not sure how UCI works in this regard and it may be good to have some basic wages for women cyclist but after that I do believe that it should "grow" naturally. If percentage wise it will be the same across the board, then it will come to amount of interest from audience, media and sponsors etc. that will decide how much an athlete would earn. I think that most of the time this is how it is today, although I am sure that there are some cases where women are treated unfair, but I strongly believe that it will be better in the future. Cheers!
@fearnothing37983 жыл бұрын
Women dont care how they get the money, they just want the same as men and don't care if male riders subsidise them or not. You only have to look to other areas of sport and life to see this . They look at what men have and want the exact same regardless if they can gainer a following or bring in sponsorship . Most female sports are subsidised by their Male counterparts . WNBA in the US, women's football in England . I'd love to see how female tennis players would fair out if the men went their seperate ways. Very few people watch or are interested in female sports not because they're women but because they're the best.
I have a whole load of innovations for the world of the professional cycling, so if you need any ideas I have some. First up, is a complete shake-up of the World Tour, particularly the events in it. I would reduce the top tier to some of the biggest events in the sport, but grow it to 4 tiers and probably introduce promotion/relegation. I would also introduce tiers for women's racing. One of my other main focus' would be a change in costs. Chief of which would be a cost cap for overall team budget for each tier of both the men's and women's sport. The cap would probably be €30m, but if a team had a budget higher than a certain amount (probably either €20m or €30m) they would have to have both a men's and women's team.

Parity between men and women in sport is as irrelevant as, for instance, parity between male Premier League players . . . it's the entertainment business and pay should reflect how good / popular each player is, the viewing figures, the merchandising and advertising revenue they bring in and consequently how valuable they are. Think of the comparative quality and duration of the Wimbledon men's and women's semi finals and finals and ask yourself if the women deserved the same money as the men. This isn't sexist but just one example of why, in my opinion, parity in the entertainment business in irrelevant. There are others in which the equation is reversed in favour of women . . . Adele and Madonna for instance earn way more than one hell of a lot of male artists.

Someone below asked about defining and determining Hacks and Bodges and I took a stab at pinning it down. Is this definition a Hack or Bodge? 😉 What do you think? 🤔 Anything to change/add to this? Definition: both hacks and bodges are meant to be improvements that are both innovative and custom to your bike. They are both modifications/changes/additions to the bike or equipment which are derived from either of the following procedures: 1. developing and installing home-fabricated or self-fabricated parts 2. repurposing one or more existing items which are not originally cycling related to serve a cycling related purpose. Distinguishing Hack from Bodge: A hack succeeds where a bodge fails because a hack 1. is executed in an aesthetically neat and pleasing fashion 2. exhibits attention to detail and careful forethought 3. demonstrates a superior sense of engineering ability 4. fulfills the intended design purpose well 5. successfully argues the case for it's existence i.e the nature of its purpose is useful enough and sufficiently universal in nature to justify there being a manufactured product on the market, but there isn't.

Pulkit Sharma disagree. Van Vlueten is hard as nails, miraculous escape from death at the Olympics and very quickly back to winning races, in style (a lot). Sure, Sagan is a big character, but the point is that even the middling male riders are doing better than female riders at the top of their game. If the exposure is lacking that’s not the fault of individual female riders.

#askGCNtraining the most Zwift workouts are 60-70 min long. Most days this is too short for me; so what do you recommend? Double it up or ride Day 1 and Day 2 from the trainingsplan and skip the warm-up in the 2nd row? Or just increase power?
