God, the whole “money lying around the house” bit in the first couple minutes reminded me of my great great grandma Emma Muilenburg (née Collison) who had a couple thousand (I think) stashed away in various places about her house. It wasn’t uncommon for people to distrust banks with their money back then (she lived from 1903 to 1988). After she passed away and her kids went through her belongings in her house, they found enough money to pay for a her funeral, and even then, there was enough money to split between all three of her kids. It’s just crazy lol

My mother always tend to bring up stories how my grand grandfather once have found a bucket of golden coins buried under tree near his fields. Although he had some gold he couldn't swap it for any goods because of war that plagued country so even though he technically was pretty rich he couldn't do a thing with the money and after all he buried it himself under the stove threshold in local bakery which he hadn't told anyone including his own wife or daughter. Finally my grand grandma allowed some fortune seekers to search for it for some money. That's a tale about how money even in the most stable currency sometimes can be worthless.

Hi Michael, I am going back through a bunch of your videos and I have to tell you your collection of videos is simply awesome! Some of the best content available here on YT. Your presentation style, topics, flow of dialogue, etc... are all great. However the one thing that I am getting is a strong sense of nostalgia, I mean a really big wave of it! The music in the background is so important and it sets the fingerprint and the tone/mood of the videos with such a strong impact that when certain songs are played it is like the nostalgia volume knob gets cranked to 11! And if that is not fun enough my son saw me here and commented on how he remembers watching these videos together - one could not ask for more that this. your content has been part of the fabric of the past decade for me and my sons! A part that makes all of us smile! Thanks for making such entertaining, high quality content! (I think I may have used a few too many exclamation points throughout this comment but that was how it felt so I guess I will leave them be!!!

Well, they give themselves a yearly budget for what the government is gonna fund, and for decades now they have always exceeded that budget by millions or even billions every year and borrowed that amount from.... somewhere. And so, over time, all that cash has gotten bigger than they'll ever be able to pay off, due to interest, unless they do something drastic like spending their annual GDP on nothing but paying it off for decades, which is never gonna happen.

I know its been 7 years, but technically Michael makes a mistake at 3:28. When the central bank wants to increase money supply, they buy government bonds from a NON-BANK counterparty. That way, whoever they buy the bonds from will deposit money at a bank, hey-presto, more money. If the counterparty is a bank you run the risk that they are recapitalising after a financial crisis (i.e. exactly what happened after 2008), thus any money you create will go to the banks' capital and won't affect money supply.

The probability of you winning is the same. The more people play, despite the greater income from ticket sales, the win is likely to be worth less because it is divided by more winning tickets.

I love this video, but I wish you delved into digital money, which is pretty much more common than physical cash nowadays. I want to know the philosophy of money that doesn’t really exist in a physical form but is still as valuable as cash. Also would love to hear about liquid assets, stocks, and those kinds of complicated things.

He did when he was talking about how much money exists. If you’re looking for philosophy in modern economics, you’re looking in the wrong place. The philosophy is just “the system exists to benefit the rich and those in power oh and also if you do the things we do you’ll get sent to prison”.

Moral of the story... money is worth nothing, it's just paper and "we all" agreed it has value. So we work for some paper to have actual food and else and maybe do some war for the sake of it. Money is a game. Should we still play or should we quit it?

well yeah FIAT money is an illusion. But I would rather work as a nurse in my hospital for the fiat money than go spear chucking for my dinner. Or go and find the plants to cure my nasal congestion than use the money to get it already made

Alright. And when we quit, what then? Then we would live just like in medieval ages ( trading two sheeps for 5 chickens) If not so,then it will lead to chaos, becouse in the store you just come in and take everything.Which results in an empty stores. If not so,then how so?
