I had my daughter record every peso that was spent during 1 month in the philippines. I work too support my family in the uk. Anyway when she sent me the list of items and the overall budget I was shocked but the list was just common day spending. Fresh food being the expensive items. So even for families its hard. There are only 2 people in our house. Luckily we own it so no cost there. As I planning to go home to PH this year I have been doing my plan and I have changed it numerous times. There is never a right amount it all depends on your own circumstances. 1 month is never the same as the next. Like Mike says try too save each month. If you budget say P25000 a month and then spend only P23000 save the other P2000. Always over estimate as no one knows unforseen issues. Costs are going up all over the world so increases will just happen overnight. Just be wise.

Originally we planned to retire in the Philippines. After retiring we went 3 times to different places where we thought we possibly want to retire. It’s gotten more expensive for sure. Our main issue is healthcare, then getting around is not easy. Davao was our first choice but after spending time there, it became frustrating because of the dialect that I don’t understand. The other thing is the expectation that since you are foreigner you have money to give away. We even look at some properties to buy and the prices are shocking.

The land and house prices are very expensive due to used of business to most of filipinos, especially close by the big city , but we bought our lot/land not too expensive in Pinamungajan, Southern Cebu, 2hrs driving from Pinamungajan to Cebu city.

@@FilAmSerlCoupleVlog hey neighbor hehehe, my wife and I did the same thing, our biggest mistake was we bought land and built a house while still in Hawaii, just because it was close to my wife's sisters and family, but when we first arrived here in aloguinsan, we both know we made a huge mistake. Our barangay is crowded, noisy at night ( karaoke, etc) and much too far from Cebu. So while we wait for our all of the paperwork to be finalized ( long story) we just bide our time until we are able to sell this place, and find a place we want to be. And if we can't find a buyer in a reasonable amount of time, we'll just go back to the US and start over. I hope you're enjoying your home in Ptown 😁

Great video. Let me add, if you embrace a minimalist lifestyle it makes things simpler Try to buy pans and knives that can be used for multiple purposes. Get bowls that can be used for cereal, soup and snacks all in one. Try to minimize how many plates, cups and glasses you need. And have paper cups and plates on hand. When I downsized i couldnt believe how much excess glasses and silvaware i had ..donated it it all . Thanks again ❤

There’s too much bad information on you tube about living cheap in PI. This video is spot on it’s not as cheap as people think. The prices rise faster where there are a lot of foreigners and will continue to as more foreigners arrive in duma. Hope this video will open some eyes before making the big move.

I have planned to come to the Philippines to retire and find a good Filipina! But after watching your video and puts things financially more into perspective! Cuz if you're coming there to relax and retire I truly believe you need at least $2,000 a month and $10,000 to start up. And the saying that after listening to you at least $5,000 as emergency fund! Yep, its all about planning for the first few months in country. A month before we flew, we had my wife's niece go look at a few places and make complete videos outside and of every room inside. Once she found exactly what we were looking for, we told her to let the landlord know and to give her all the deposit money (once we sent it). Some people may not do that, but my wife's family would never let us get messed over and we did not sign the lease until we had been here for 2 months just to make sure things did not crumble. Our initial budget was $120,000 for the first 6 months. We flew with a little over $30,000 for the 1st two months' purchases and then started transferring another $80,000 along with my 1/2 military retirement and 1/2 of my VA disability, so that we can go look for land a few cities away. Every single thing you mentioned, we bought during the first two weeks, lol. Her family did not understand why we were constantly shopping... We bought an Etrike for local running around and a MPV for longer distances and bigger grocery days. I explained to them that it was about comfort and functionality. Very good breakdown of the needs/wants during the first few months. Absolutely great break down and realistic considerations that everyone should consider. A while ago I asked Black Filipino for some information and he offered a paid consultation. I did not understand why he could not just answer a question via email (still don't understand charging for an email response). But with you waking up for phone calls, it is more personal as you are giving up your sleep. Yep, I completely understand you charging. If they are going to cause you to get up based on their time, they may as well put something in it to lose when setting up the phone call appointment.

My budget is right 1500 and I own my 300,000 home and cars and toys I have been all through east Asia and I still don’t think any amount of money keeps you safe however the key is access and never talking to anyone about your income or your asset. Finding a girlfriend who is at least in her 30 to help and enjoy her company and just start your adventure

Mike, this is great advice but honestly, it applies everywhere not just the Philippines. If you were moving to any new city in the US you need the same advice. I think it might be the case that retirees have forgotten advice they likely gave to their kids decades ago.

That startup fund is secure but now have a better idea of were I want that startup to be. Good video for older expats. After living in South Korea for 3 years, I find the older folks have a significantly harder time adapting to a new lifestyle. I tell friends who’ve thought about living overseas, it is a huge lifestyle change from living in the US. Us, 39/40yo guys have a much easier time as we are a little flexible and tend to be a little more resilient.

We hit it off immediately, been together ever since and we're getting married next month. We got a one bedroom home initially. Rent cheap, approx $200/month. Furnished. We eat out most every day, Lotta travel. We were jn Phuket for four years. Then came baCk to her hometown of Trang. Dhe has a house here. Laid back, nice Thai people. Great place to stage road trips in Central and South Tland. All good!! Every day an adventure!!

My impression is that we seem to have similar ideas as to what is required and are expected in order to move to the Philippines. I have worked in and out of countries for close to 50 years so I have developed an instinctively sense of what needs to be done before moving overseas full time. I pegged our (wife included) startup fund at roughly $10,000 USD to get started with the access to utilize additional funds. As human nature would have it, some people can not resist the temptation to want to push the envelope on cost or another words how much can I squeeze by on. 👍

I worked on ships in looking for oil in the marine seismograph industry for 48 years and worked offshore in 60 countries during my working stint. I did not begin to draw my social security until 2016 when I reached the age of 66 and I am so glad I waited! 👍

All you said is 100% true. I will add, always make sure that you can show the bills for what you have paid for in advance, and make sure to have a copy of the bills. It is not enough to have a copy of your driver's license to show the officer who someday might stop you in traffic. But no matter what, it is always good to have copies of everything important.

Good point you make on "food poison." We tend to think we get it only from a dumpy restaurant. I only got it once in my life and it was from a well known French restaurant. Always carry 'activated charcoal.'

The way they treated him after things didn't work out along with the young lady having twins in relation to the family is a reflection of how some people can be. Besides of all of that his initial plan of living off a small amount of money over a few years way before he would be eligible to receive his SS was a bad idea from the beginning.

Great video Mike. I’m moving there in September. I’m bringing $5,000 in cash with access to another $5,000 that will be in the bank plus I will have a credit card. On top of that I will be bringing in $2,400 a month. I’m hoping that once I get settled in there that I can save $500 to $800 a month. I definitely won’t be getting a girlfriend until after I have lived there at least a year. If I do end up with a girlfriend she will be an orphan without children 😂😂😂.

I’ve lived here for almost 15 years. ❤ Your video is right to the points for someone new. Money was never an issue because we learned to save in our younger years. Being married to a Filipino, things are much easier than being single or alone. We built a 5br, 5b, 3 story home - all paid off in cash. Even with our home paid off, we still budget $2000 a month to enjoy life. But one question, why always talk about the key locations for expats ? There’s less costly locations to live & better than many of the key locations. Why no one has a video on this is weird 😂. Just a block away from me, $100, 2BR, 1bath, small kitchen & living room. I think paying cash is the best move (if you can) or save until you reach a level where you can. I wouldn’t mortgage in the Philippines due to high interest & most won’t negotiate if you try to pay it off early. Budget is important, I recommend $2000 a month if your renting, anything less will not give you as much quality in your lifestyle 💞

Ironically, my fiancee lives in Dumaguete. We know each over for over a decade and i have visited multiple times to Dumaguete. We both have kids and mines are still in there teens phase so i won't be leaving America anytime soon. Our goal is to work out here, then we will live in her hometown of Dumaguete when we retire. It makes me nod my head in satisfaction of the breakdowns you stated. I will never forget my first airbnb rental lmao! the gas for the stove went out, not enough towels, mattresses were questionable, very squeaky furniture cabinets and doors, and the worst of the worst, strays and pest! Definitely an eye opener but you are totally right about renting before making a firm decision lol! one of my stays lasted for 25 days and was an incredible/challenging experience. I definitely adapted to the Filipino lifestyle and i am so ready to leave America for a lot of the things you said in another video (5 reasons why you left America. I am only 37 and know i have some time before retirement with my kids living here but i will 100% make sure they are in a good position in life before i leave. I hate the most that they have to live in this society thats been created out here now. Anyways, i hope when i visit back out there next year (Me and my fiancee are working on getting her fiancee visa) that we could possibly meet up and chat. I am always willing to listen to people of wisdom and learn more. Dumaguete is a small world and i don't know if i had happen to see you at the Pancake House out there this Year in early May lol! A nice property spot that me and my fiancee would love to live is the Camella homes inbetween Valencia and Dumaguete. I like uniformity, the gated community...and you know...no stray dogs. I am all for man best friend but dam, that first air bnb experience with 4 strays raiding the trashcans and chewing on our shoes outside (i got some lemon scent stuff for the porch that kept there butts away), i never want to deal with that again. i honestly know those dogs are just trying to survive and it hurts to see them in that condition they were in, but in all fairness, the rowdyness they caused in the neighborhood was enough for me to not want to deal with that. Bleh, sorry for the long rant. Take care out there as i know personally how carefree the life is.

Good advice to newcomers, but unfortunately many people will ignore it, thinking they know better. I came here 4 years when I turned 50. I had already bought and furnished a house - through my wife , obviously - 2 years prior to moving permanently so I had somewhere to go on arrival and we had transport. We've since bought more property,, both commercial and residential, so we have an income that exceeds our spending and, pre-pandemic, allowed us to take frequent trips, both domestic and foreign. Medical insurance is a must and it came in handy for me last year when I had a bike crash. Retirement for me means being relaxed, enjoying myself and not worrying about money.

Hi Mike yeah I got food poisoning 4 1/2 years ago I think it was the donuts I got in Cebu airport crispy cream custard filled in the custard tasted tangy I ate the donut anyway and by the time my flight got to Manila I was throwing up for three days in my hotel room And so I went to the hospital on the fourth day and she gave me some medicine they were very good to me at the hospital by the way excellent care and I think it cost me about $100 but they ran all kinds of tests. So you’re right you do need to watch what you eat….

It's a great video Mike. It's the most serious conversation I've heard on this topic, and rightly so! I've traveled to Asia from Australia for vacation, about 6 or 7 times. I always took my health and financial situation into account. I didn't think I needed as sizeable emergency fund, as your suggesting. However, I was aware of what could go wrong, and made sure I had all contingencies taken care of. I'm flabbergasted at some of the vlogger stories I find about guys traveling unprepared!

This is my second video of yours and I am so impressed and calmed. I felt rather paranoid about all my worries and while listening to you I felt like my pop was back and telling me things about life I hadnt considered yet. I mean I had many worries and you added 3 big points. Proof that I am still too "young" and dependent. Thank you, sir! I hope my insurences will be paused during my extended stays. I only had two ways to transfer money and only one of them garantueed good conditions for foreign activities. Renting out my appartment. To be honest I thought about giving it to a friend I trust but its smarter to charge a minor rent from him. Everything helps during my first few visits on the Philippines. I love how you stress out the point about the emergency cases. A part of me thinks "that wont happen to me because I am pretty relaxed about most things" but I am sure that they will be a big surprise in it for me. Biggest point to me was the equipment in the houses/ airbnb. Never crossed my mind that I would have to watch out for absolutely unfurnished appartments.

The best thing I did was realize that I need to leave and head home so many people wait until they are broke as for credit cards if your from Europe they will take credit cards away from you if they find you are living out of Europe. Came with 80,000 bucks left with 5,000 bucks after 2 Years. (Thailand same same but different)

When I came here I was putting aside $1000.00 per month just to bring for start up money. That did not include my plane ticket. I knew the cost of rent, water, electric and a new bike. I had my budget sheet set up before I came. Had 2 people looking at rentals before I came. The 2nd day I was here they took me to four places to look at. I signed a lease then when and bought a new bike. 3rd day they took me to government office to get tax number then they took me to bdo to open my own bank account. Came with $10,000.00 start up. That was in 2016. All still good.

i honestly believe we all need to keep @ least 20% for a emergency no matter where we are in the world. If we do this it should cover all or most emergencies! I will be moving to the islands in the next 5 years. I don't know where in the world but the Philippines is on this list! People do need to respect other people's time so I do understand why you must start charging something for you time! I'm allergic to the world is what my doctor has told me. All the times I have spent at least 6 mo in the Islands of the world my life is much better....so ready to move... God bless

from my experience of traveling yearly to the PH and spending months there each time, and watching a lot of youtubers talking about budget, people need to realize those amounts are minimums. After they turn off the camera, those people are having beers, going to restaurants, taking vacations, paying for island hopping, scuba, and it all adds up a lot. Going to the mall to buy clothes, Their girlfriends need money, their family needs money. Nobody shares all those details, so double those minimums other vloggers talk about per month and you'll be ok for a starting point.
