I have had 2 sponsors. Taco Bell didn't pay me a lot, but it allowed me to make a really good video. Canon didn't pay me at all, but they put video cameras in my hands after my home was burglarized and all my filmmaking equipment was gone. I am very thankful for that. When I started my channel in 2007, I bought a Canon video camera for $300. I never really thought there would come a time when they would partner with me and let me use their cameras.

I would never ever consider paying someone with 3000 views 300$, Anna Akana said that one of her sponsors paid for one month enough money to pay back her expenses to make a short movie. She also said that the average cost of a short movie of her it's 2500 - 3000$. So if Audible paid her 3000$ for 4 videos of 300.000 views each, it means that audible paid 0,0025$ FOR EACH VIEW... But you are saying that someone with 3000 views should ask for 300$: Please, don't delude people, none of us is gonna pay that much for such small channels.
@AlexaLikes9 жыл бұрын
+oceansuk You would be really surprised. It depends a lot more on the quality of your content, how niche and involved your audience is and perhaps how interested they would be in the sponsor's product. I've gotten paid a lot more and occasionally I do not reach 3K views on a video after a month.

There is so much more you could do on this topic - How to approach potential sponsors. How to develop a sponsorship marketing plan. What to include / exclude in a proposal / what sponsors would find attractive. How to prepare videos to be 'on message' or 'brand friendly.' How to leverage a corporate sponsorship into a sustainable partnership. How to target potential sponsors. Most of this is not exactly rocket science, and should be addressed in existing business or marketing plans - but I have a feeling most youtubers aren't making business plans. This is my 'anonymous' account - but I usually create video's for corporates directly - so no production happens without a directive and funding - the opposite / less anxiety ridden process. I may jump in on this idea - as it has piqued my curiosity and its an area that isn't saturated.

This was a good video Tim, actually I watched it the other day and wanted to think carefully about my comment before I left it. I like the advice of your guest, he is very knowledgeable but I think the figures you calculated for your viewer were off. I have a highly niche channel with 74k subs and I average 7.8k views per video and I have a hard time getting much more than what you quoted him at 3k views and a moderate niche. My audience is women 34-65, not teens. Also I make full videos for the advertiser using their products, in most cases it is not a plug or mention. I am often rehired by the same company. Maybe I am too soft. I just did not want creators to get unrealistic advice. Many time companies contact me and they want me to give a plug to their company for free product and a lot of it is not even art related. I get more offers like that than the latter. In fact many companies will not offer money, you have to ask for your fee, I think they will try and see what they can get first. So many companies are looking for free promotion, big national companies that you see advertise with ads on youtube so you know they have a budget. Now, that said, I consider trade with companies who can offer me substantial trade (trade=200% of my video fee) on products I would buy anyway. I used to be a radio announcer and I know when advertiser had to offer trade it would double the value of the ad rates. That can be a good form of payment as long as you are getting a fair amount for the reach that your channel has. Or a combination of payment and credit/trade. I hope this comment was not totally useless. Bottom line: What you charge and what a brand is willing to pay may be quite different :)

great! you made a good point on your last sentence. As I am thinking about sponsoring a youtuber, there is no way I will pay $300 for 3000 views! that is a joke!!! insane! I might spend $30 at maximum per video. and the more view the person create, less ratio of pay-per-view will get .

Great video Tim. Very helpful and thanks for recruiting Brendan Gahan into the video. I'm happy to see him suggest rates of $50 to $150 CPM for video sponsorships. I've read this is about the rate cable TV charges and I would argue video sponsorships are more valuable to the advertiser because they get to have the main personality of the show recommending their product. AND they get to skip the production expense (thousands of dollars) of creating the commercial.

That sounds like way too much money. $300 to do a sponsored video on a channel that only gets 3000 views per video? So that would mean a channel that gets 300,000 views on average gets paid thirty thousand dollars for each sponsored video? I really doubt that.

Hey Tim, I know that this is an old video but really hoping that either you and/or your subscribers could offer some advice. I'm about to enter into a fairly long term contract with a company to create some sponsored videos for them on my channel. I would like to include a basis on which I charge for my videos in the contract and I was planning to charge based on my 'social bluebook value', which takes into account various factors including my subscriber count, engagement, etc; so as my channel continues to grow, so would my value and the amount I am worth (for lack of a better phrase). I'm basically trying to find out how you would go about setting out fee arrangement terms for long term contracts as I wouldn't want to shortchange myself in the long run by locking myself into a set price. Hope that this question is not confusing.

This is extremely extremely helpful. Have been scratching my head over this for quite some time now. I had a sub-question though. The cost that a creator arrives at...does that have to be upfront? I mean there a lot of brands out there that are open to paying but not upfront. They might want to do so via an affiliate program where they can share up to 50%-70% revenue but only be ready to spend a small cost upfront owing to the size of their marketing spends. This actually pans out really well if the brand and the creator's audience have a great fit and the video can influence people to make purchases. Do you think creators are open to this kind of a set-up and is recommended that they be, or should they just vouch for an upfront payment?
@videorebeldes10 жыл бұрын

I don't have brand deals (jet) but company's are asking me to give workshops. Don't give it away for free to company's they have advertisement budgets so they have the money. If they want you, they have to pay, so I won't cut them, as fast as Tim does, a deal. I would send in my partner who is extremely good in making deals,;) and I think he would start higher with $400 and come down to maybe $250.
@VideoCreators10 жыл бұрын
Rebecca Blokzijl That's certainly another tactic to use. I was thinking more along the lines of having a few brand deals under my belt so I have better stats and examples to show future brands who come asking for that information. Right now I don't have stats to give them about how past brand deals have performed.
@RebeccaBlokzijl10 жыл бұрын
I can understand that. I think both ways have something to say for them. Here we always try to know what is easy to give away for the other party, and what is more difficult. Also we think what we want to give in To and what not. Often we have found out (not on KZbin but In our webshops) that if you put up what's at stake, you get more. Once in a wile you walk away empty handed, but most times, you have more then you wanted.

At the risk of opening a Pandora's box (not the James Cameron kinda Pandora), how does charging for sponsored content fit with KZbin's TOS? I'm not a lawyer but it looked like they reserved the right to charge for advertising of any kind to themselves. They also kinda contradict themselves by allowing very commercial corporate promo content and even product placements. So it is all very confusing. I have seen many successful, high profile channels that should be on KZbin's radar saying, "This episode is brought to you by..." without, as far as I know, KZbin getting any of that revenue. Thoughts on this friends?

Hey Tim, I've been enjoying all of your advice, but I have a somewhat technical question. I've notice that a lot of creators use television type techniques such as lower thirds and such. Where does a new KZbinr find the knowledge on how long a transition should last or whether to fade in or out at the end of a video? Is there a set fade time length that works best or is it based on if it feels right? Thanks Tim.

@VideoCreators10 жыл бұрын
Mark Chadwick That's certainly possible. There's not really a flaw in it except that giving KZbin 45% is a big cut. Plus, many brands want their product integrated into the actual content of the video, not just a skippable pre-roll.

***** For a brand integration deal, a one-time video usually makes the most sense. For an on-going sponsorship, I'd price it for at least a month for X number of videos. Some brands prefer to do quarterly sponsorships, so you could price it out for 3 months.
@BiteSizeVegan10 жыл бұрын
great thank you Video Creators. by integration do you mean like a product placement with it being organically in the video vs. having their logo as a watermark or in the video intro, etc? i'm assuming those are more "sponsorship" type things? as well as saying "this video is sponsored by___"

Tim, why is it, (including your channel infact) we get a huge amount of people liking our content so much that they subscribe, however the views do not reflect the subscribe count, I am already starting to see this and I have a friend with around 50,000 subscribers however he gets from 1,000 to 5,000 views per video, is it bad that we aren't getting our whole fan base watching our videos or is this a sign we aren't reaching out to the viewer like we did when they subscribed. Thanks!
@VideoCreators10 жыл бұрын
Tech Talk (Old Channel) Good question. We talked about that a year or so ago in a video, but it's probably worth revisiting. A couple questions: -- Do you watch every video from every channel you're subscribed to? -- Do you ever miss a week or two of going through your subscriptions? -- Are you more interested in some channels you're subscribed to than others? A 1 view for 10-14 subscribers seems to be about average across KZbin. Of course, some have much more highly engaged audiences and some have less.

Hi VC, Great Vid! I am a very small (in comparison lol) up and coming YouTubber, in a niche area, Fantasy football. I have been approached by a few companies to wear sports shirts in my video's whilst I talk about how my fantasy football team get on each week. They will provide me with the t-shirts regularly & maybe a monthly fee. My question is .. I was told that a video only classes as an Ad, if you've been asked to say something specific? I have not been asked to do that...just mention in any way i like where the t-shirt came from & a link in the description...so first up, do i say this is an Ad? do I state I got the shirt for free? what the best protocol? Secondly, do I tick the paid product placement box on KZbin? I'm not sure what this box is for and I don't want to get into trouble..ticking it or not ticking it when I should. I realise you must be very busy, but I really would love some help on this, I'd be very grateful.. Many thanks, Nymfria

THIS IS A QUESTION 3000 video views or ad views? Advertisers pay the CPV for watched ads. Roughly 22% of people watch and count towards a CPV, so wouldn't it be more reasonable to charge what monetization would have paid. 3000*0.22= 660 ad views -- 660*.10= $66. Next question would be is that $66 before or after the 32% commission KZbin takes?

Brendan Gahan Video Creators I plan on starting a video series that is focused around aviation sometime late winter. The content would be what I'd consider to be evergreen. I am curious whether I am able to monetize the video through Google adsense while also having a sponsor? Is there any common practices for this sort of thing?
@VideoCreators10 жыл бұрын
MNAviator Sure, you can monetize sponsored videos through Adsense. Just check the box under the "advanced" tab when you're uploading the video to let Google know that the video has paid product/sponsorship in it. That way certain advertisers (i.e. competitors to the brand you're promoting) can avoid your video if they'd like.

+VIDEO CREATORS I do Unboxings & Reviews of tech products and just got my first offer from a company to pay me to review their product. My data shows that the videos are getting a steady amount of views over long periods of time. That being said, since I've only started a few months ago, my average views are only around 200. This company also wants me to upload the video to amazon. Around how much do you think I should charge?

Thank you so much for your videos. I'm going to start my own gaming channel on Feb 10th (I won't say what it is out of respect for your channel) and your videos are so informative and helpful. I appreciate it and thank you for being a helpful person for people starting out. I'll sub to you since this is my first time on your channel and I'll definitely watch more of your videos as I go down the path of a KZbinr. Again thank you so much. :)

+videocreators hey Tim, just wondering if you knew of some ways to find some sponsors? My channel is a specific niche that doesn't really have a major consistency on KZbin except for the main corporation. So I'm wondering if you have some ideas on how to go about getting sponsors. I just started my channel in September and have seen a consistent number of views. I'd like to start planning on some drafts to help attract some sponsorship. Thanks!

Excellent episode my friend. It is interesting to know what others are doing. Do you have any strategies on approaching sponsors or is it customary for them to approach you?
@VideoCreators10 жыл бұрын
***** You can approach them or they can approach you. Either way is fine.

Do you think it's safe to put your real name on your youtube channel or online ingeneral?
@VideoCreators10 жыл бұрын
TrrripS Jz I think it's ok as long as you're smart about it. You don't have to use your real name, though, if you don't want to.

Great video Tim, one of the topics I've been trying to get information on for years. With KZbin intro function that allows to place a new intro on all your videos. You can sell all the views of your entire channel for a month and get a higher rate. I work with a lot of musicians and I tell them to use it to promote their music on iTunes and other platforms across their channel.
@VideoCreators10 жыл бұрын
***** I've seen musicians do that for their own music, but I thought KZbin frowned upon selling that space. I'd have to look into that.
