@jacobday38264 жыл бұрын
@@feitan8033 Let's do a comparison. Last year I bought a 2010 Cerato with 100,000kms on the clock for $6500 (drive away). It's an SLI trim level which was the second highest trim level for that year, and it's an automatic. For this generation of Ceratos the most comparable trim level is the Sport trim. The cheapest automatic I could find on car sales was a 2019 Cerato for $24,000 (drive away). I'm certainly not going to pay 4* just for a new car. In my specific circumstance when I bought my car I was 20 with $30K in the bank, so I very well could have gone either route. However, with the money I saved I was able to wait for a good investment opportunity, and guess what happened? The coronavirus! So now I've not only saved $23K on a car, I've also used that $23K to make me more money! So tell me, why would a new car be worth it?

I've been living and working as an actor for over ten years, and because my income is very unstable, I mostly saved everything I earned. For ten years, most of my meals have been self-cooked quinoa, chicken breasts, broccoli, and eggs. I've been in China for three years where I don't need a car. And now I have about 275K cash saved up with which to invest, simply because I've avoided stupid purchases for a decade and made one decent real estate transaction.

Hey Graham, an insurance question, whats your opinion on insurance if you have the money to whatever can happen?
@robinkoko4 жыл бұрын
I would still get it because of the cost sharing. Specifically with medical, once you reach your out of pocket max for the year the carrier covers the rest at 100% so that saves you what you would’ve spent otherwise. Every insurance is different so I’m not too sure about car and home etc.
@MonicaHolly1434 жыл бұрын
Millionaires will still pay insurance That's why they are rich becuz they maximize every dollar they can save
@DavidHanks903 жыл бұрын
Insurance has out of pocket maximums so even if you have 10 million saved, you don't want to lose that all in the case of an accident or disease that could be very costly. And then additionally, if something did arise where you needed that full amount, you are banking on nothing else happening until you can save up that amount again. Insurance is a much safer bet, even if it can be annoying to pay.

It's not right on so many levels. Take up your burden and suffer it. Its the only way to grow.

Some of the best advice I've heard is treat your time and money as interchangeable, and it puts perspective things into your life. Would I be willing to do my least favorite part of my job for an hour to buy item X? If yes then buy it, if no, then don't Would I pay $5 to get an hour of my life back....$10....$20...find your dollar amount you value your mental health at (It will change at times, there's been times I've bought a cold water out of a vending machine for $2 when it's 100+ degree out). For me If I pay $5 to have someone pick up all my groceries and I save an hour of my life to only have to drive up, get them put in my car and drive off, then I bought an hour of free time for $5... If I avoid the 15 minute back and forth trip to return the broken $10 item I got from Amazon, then I'm refusing to work for $40/hour It swings both ways, because it helps you put stuff back at stores (Is this Shirt really worth half an hour of hearing about Karen's expired coupon) and it'll help you rationalize purchases that will help you long term (Graham's video about hiring a Property Management company or even mental health things such as "Would I pay my daily salary to not go into work today" If you can honestly say you'd spend what you make in a day, rather than go into work it's a good day to call out sick for mental health. It helps you realize when you need to recharge.

I am so glad you chewed up the 50/30/20 "rule"
@MaxSujyNorden4 жыл бұрын
By the time most people retire, they don't have the energy, motivation, etc, to do stuff that they once dreamed of doing in their 20s to 40s. For example, if you love traveling, you will for sure go overboard sometimes with traveling budget which will hurt long time-saving. But some of your dream travel experience you won't be able to do when you are at age to retire. And imagine if you die of cancer randomly at 55 years old with a lot of saving, was it worth it? Now, ofc, I'm all for not spending on useless meaningless stuff, but life experience is not something you should wait to be in a wheelchair to attempt. Most people here probably make more money then I do, but I have more travel experience than most. I currently live in Thailand countryside with my Thai girlfriend and our 5 Dogs. The one thing that I regret is my student loan debt (yeah, Canadians do have student loans). I didn't have to graduate Psychology, I didn't do anything with it, I should have been my own boss much earlier instead. Having debt is even worse than not saving money (even if it's low-interest-rate) because the debt you pay back every month is a lost opportunity.

Would you suggest putting more in a brokerage if you plan to retire before that age since it will be more available?

My way of doing things is 30% on living expenses, 5% savings, 30% invest and 35% on wants and fun. I'm 23. I've got a steady job. And at 23 I want to be irresponsible while I still can be. This is my time to be adventurous and enjoy life. So great financial advice, but there are things that I want to do but I can't see myself doing in 7 years time. I gotta stick by my way of life even if it means being less well off later down the line.

same advice. you just don't have to factor healthcare into your budget so save the difference or if you want a slightly higher spending percentage each month then you can do that

Graham Stephan Yeah I’m from Europe and always watch your channel because it’s really good. Always have to translate to how things would apply here 😂 So happy though that I can study for free here, most important translation usually because it’s a thing I don’t have to worry about.

0:22 The correct way to do it is to drop the word "negative", and then compare the numbers as you would normally do. The negative sign already denotes debt, so contextually, -$27k already means $27k worth of debt.

@@vanillabreyer I've been looking at moving about an hour away, since I start work at 5 am I'd mostly avoid traffic coming in to work, but since I get off at 5pm I'd be in the worst of the traffic leaving. I'd love to move out of California ( worst state to live in,) but my wife started a new career this year and isn't established enough to leave her job, and I only moved to LA to work at my company anyway so I don't want to give that up. Paying my entire after tax income on rent for a 1 bedroom apartment is the sacrifice I make for being where all the good jobs are. Seriously though, living is LA when you're not making more than 100k a year is for young people with no wives or kids who are fine with renting/sharing a room.

@@mynameismatt2010 As a bonus, it really looks like an awesome place to live. Unless the internet portrays it in a better light lol there's a reason it's super pricey.

@@vanillabreyer It's a terrible place to live. Lol. I would never recommend moving here to anyone. The only good thing about LA is that there are a lot of amazing companies to work at here, but most of them don't pay to match the cost of living.
@olliehopnoodle46284 жыл бұрын
Good video. Remember folks, he is talking after tax income. He mentions this a couple of times in the video but many folks don't know what their after tax income is. You should include federal, (including FICA), state and city (not sales tax). Property tax can be included in your housing budget. If you make $50,000 a year and are single your Federal tax, including FICA will be about $8000 or around 16% of your income. State tax will take another chunk although usually not as much.
