How much ram memory do you REALLY need for music production?I tested how much ram memory do you need for your DAW in Logic and Studio one with real music production projects. With sample based plugins you need more memory than with synthesizers.
Memory is only one of the factors to determine the speed of the best computer for music production, besides cpu and ssd hard disk.

I've seen a couple of youtube videos doing tests with omnisphere and kontakt (with big professional orchestra libraries). With 16GB RAM you can get about 24 instances in Omnisphere and about 35 with Kontakt. Kontakt also has a purge function that saves you a ton of ram. I don't think i'd ever come remotely close to using that amount of RAM.

This. Also, learning how to use a screwdriver and building a pc negates the whole "you can't upgrade your cpu" thing, and will cost so much less. Am slated to build a 5900x build with rtx 3060 12gb (I really don't need 4k gaming at this point in time), 3 tb nvme storage and 4 tb sata ssd mass storage, and 128gb ddr4 for less than 4 grand after tax, including sleeved cables, gpu brace, rgb bling, and a 360mm aio cpu cooler. Could I shrink down to 64gb and get a 5950x instead? Sure, and that's definitely a consideration. But yeah, it's 2022; I get using a prebuilt for the gpu, but at the very least buy and install component upgrades like ram (you can get 128gb ddr4 3600 cl-18 ram for like 620 usd max, and getting extra sata ssd storage is pretty damn affordable - 4 tb drives can be as low as 350 usd for 6gb/s sata III drives.) Unless you are a professional who literally doesn't have time or you are forced into the apple ecosystem (and even if you are forced into that, tbh) you are leaving performance for less money on the table. It's 2022, it's really not hard to learn to build or spec out a custom pc (unless you add custom water cooling, in which case, godspeed!)

I'm upgrading my MacBook Pro: From a 2009 15" MacBook Pro with: CPU: 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Memory: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 RAM Graphics: NVIDIA 9600M 256 MB Storage: 320 GB SATA HDD To a 2020 16" MacBook Pro with: CPU: 2.3GHz 8‑core Intel Core i9 Memory: 16 GB 2666MHz DDR4 RAM Graphics: AMD 5500M 8 GB GDDR6 Storage: 1 TB SSD I'm still waiting on the new MacBook to be shipped, but I'm on the fence about whether or not I should return it when it arrives and upgrade it to 32 GB RAM. Currently, I can't even use up the 4 GB RAM on my old computer even when I try to push it to its limit (at least for my needs). I produce music and edit videos, but I keep things pretty basic in my productions. To test my RAM usage on my old MacBook Pro, I ran 10 of my most used programs simultaneously (Chrome, iMovie, GarageBand, QuickTime, iTunes, and several other similar, yet less known AV programs) with each program performing various tasks, especially GarageBand which was playing a project with 25 tracks and 4 instances of Kontakt running (which is usually the most I do in my productions) and I was only able to use 3 GB of RAM with 24 MB of swapping to the HDD. I assume that I will continue to use the new MacBook in a similar manner, just with newer versions of the same software on a newer OS that could be more RAM-hungry than the outdated software I'm currently using. But still, I don't normally run 10 programs at once. I was only doing that to test a worst case scenario. For this reason, I'm fairly confident that 16 GB RAM will be sufficient for my needs, but it bothers me that I see so many people suggesting that 32 GB RAM is the way to go, which is why I'm still on the fence. Fortunately, going from 4 GB RAM to 16 GB RAM (in addition to the upgraded CPU and everything else) will probably feel so nice that I won't worry anymore. I suppose I'll just run the same test on my new MacBook when it arrives. I'll run all of my favorite programs all at once and see how much RAM is being used, and from there I'll make my decision about whether to upgrade to 32 GB RAM. Anyway, thanks for the informative video. You've given me some piece of mind, for the most part. I appreciate any tips or feedback you can provide regarding my situation.

Update: I received my new MacBook Pro yesterday with 16 GB RAM. This new computer uses much more RAM because it has a 64-bit CPU. When the OSX is completely idle with no open programs, it uses 3 GB of RAM. When I use GarageBand with 8 instances of Kontakt (the most I'll ever use), it uses 13 GB of RAM with 100 MB of swapping. There are no noticeable performance issues even with heavy use of large sample libraries, so I think I'm gonna stick with the 16 GB RAM.

Dexxter, right now might not be a bad time to buy RAM if you have the extra cash. RAM and storage are both pretty inexpensive at the moment. The price of RAM does tend to fluctuate pretty drastically (16GB right now is about 1/2 of what it was in 2014/5). All it takes is for manufacturers to have an issue with a factory or a "shortage" and prices go crazy for quite a while. That said 8GB really does seem to be a sweet spot for most tasks at the moment.

16GB RAM is probably the sweet spot, 512GB storage is good I guess, but if your plan on getting a whole ton of plugins then you might wanna think about getting more than that. It also depends on whatever else you'll be doing on your pc. For example, do you do a lot of video editing? Play lots of games? Or just space for plugins? From here it shouldn't be too hard to decide, if you do lots of video editing, and play lots of games that take up a lot of storage, it's pretty obvious to go for a TB of storage or more. But you could need that much if you're really serious about how much plugins you plan on getting. I hope this helped, and if you have any other questions, all you have to do is ask.

I know this is 2 yrs old but unless you're just goofing around always do 16GB if you plan on running pro tools or ableton or else you'll be really limited by the number of tracks or plugins. Also, while RAM can often be upgraded every time you open up a computer you really risk that it won't ever work again. I've had two different computers have major problems after making very basic upgrades. Some kind of CMOS or bios issue one time and possibly static another time. It's awful when it happens.

It really, really depends on what kind of productions you're working on. If you're doing huge orchestral or cinematic music, then 16 GB at least, I'd say. But if you're working on a sort of indie rock or pop song, or most hip hop songs, I'd say 8 GB could be enough. I still think 16 GB is where it's at currently. But of course the CPU is the really important thing these days. They've been the bottleneck, along with hard drives, for so long! Having these 6-8 core cpus and solid state drives is such a big difference from the early 2010s

Thanks for that. I got 32GB on my new desktop. I see that is going to be more than. As for processor that can be controversial. For PC you got your i5 and i7 however the i7s are generally under clocked because of heat especially in laptops where as the i5 you can get away with overclocking a bit especially on a desktop. Not quite that simple however given the choice between to to I would go with the i5 just because of the heat produced when it is crunching numbers. I would rather a slightly slower CPU that runs cooler than a slightly faster one that won't last as long. Whatever way you go one thing to not over look is you are going to need a lot of storage so I set mine up with a 1TB SSD for OS and programs only, a 2TB SSD for DAW samples and projects both video and audio backed by a 3TB HDD for storage of file not often accessed or completed coupled with a 2TB external drive for backups.

I also just bought the MPC ONE which is a hybrid standalone/controller so I won't be tied to the computer much. The specs on the standalone are a little weak which is why I bought the desktop to do more complex stuff that I won't be able to do with stand alone. I also figure having a desktop I can always upgrade some things as I grow. But mostly I'll be using the MPC 2.7 software. I'm actually making the switch from FL studio which I've been using the past year to MPC. I needed a change and was starting to feel like a robot making music. That and back in the early 2000s when I messed around for around 2 years I was using more physical gear and the music just sounded more natural and less computerized.

So I’m a 17 year old rapper and all my life I’ve been writing music and now i need to set up a studio. I was looking for a laptop online and I saw this Dell Inspiron laptop from Best Buy that has an i5 processor, 8gb ram, & 256gb of ssd storage. I am going to upgrade to 16gb which i will not be able to upgrade but I think it will be enough to use until I get a new pc maybe after 7 years. I am a beginner btw. If I already was experienced I would have maybe opted for more but I think 16gb is just right for beginners and amateurs.

@DexxterClarkMusic

Audition is an Audio editor, not a DAW. You can't use midi instruments that can eat a lot of RAM for example. Real time effects might eat a lot of CPU, but I don't expect a lot of RAM. It has been 15 years or so since I used Audition (before Adobe bought it), so I can't say exactly. Depending on what you are going to do, but chopping up some audio, both 8gb and SSD are a huge overkill

Cpu is only at 20% and video card less than 10% (6gb video card) it seems like 16gb of ram is the bottleneck responsible for abelton crashing????? Thoughts everyone????

Great video!...I can’t lie though - like many I just want to produce a bit of cool music in the bedroom with a half decent set up that might just be worthy of a release on a label . I would like to use Kontakt instruments occasionally for some of the sounds. That being said (and again like many) these instruments will be ‘now and again’ and hardly like those pros producing film scores. I use logic, so I’m ‘tied’ to Mac. And I’m sure those loyal to logic are all a bit perplexed with the M1/unified memory release that’s recently come out on the Mac Mini that I’m looking at. I may indeed go for the 2018 model for the fact you can upgrade the RAM. I should note that I also use analog lab software and and an arturia midi controller Simple question - Taking the above, are we saying 16gb will see this comfortably dealt with or is my soul destroying fear pushing me to 32gb something that I need to listen too? 😂

computers generally don't see RAM modules as individual components but as a whole. Swtiching between RAM modules is something your Operating System (Windows) does automatically: your program asks for a chunk of memory from the OS. Your OS gives it to the program if it is available. It is very likely that memory of one program is on 2 separate RAM modules.

I think the video is missing some important stuff. In your case 12gig would not be optimal, you need dual channel with same specs. And capacity. Otherwise it may slow down your ram, this in done in the bios on a hardware level. Furthermore you are missing that some people use 2 or 3 adat linked up to one soundcard. In my case that is 28 channels of audio recording at the same time as processing with plugins in realtime with a latency around 4-6mS. Then I have the DAW which already contains sounds and additions VSTs and some software editors on the side for controlling the synths outside of the DAW, and then you add the OS, in this case Windows which can really be a memory hog, and you rather want to avoid using a pagefile. My conclusion is 32Gig like mentioned by others. If you are just using a few samples and a few VST's then 8 would be fine. But for a more professional setup, it wouldnt work at all.

Then, (respectfully)... Adapt. Change your workflow. Sample preparation makes a world of difference. Used to own an old EMU hardware sampler - the memory was shocking... Maxed out at 128meg. Yes MEG. SO trimming the fat was a basic need. Case in point, do you really need a higher sample rate? A 192khz sample of something that has next to nothing above a 500hz frequency - like a kick drum? Excessive. I've sampled a kick in 22khz with a 16 bit sample... Sounds fine. There's the classic "fast taping" trick... Used to be used all the time with older hardware samplers... You have the sample playing twice it's normal pitch & speed (so a 800hz sound is playing at 1600hz for example and lasting 0.5sec as opposed to 1sec). That sample will use less memory when slowed down to play at its normal rate. If the sample is converted to a mono one also... Your memory needs are slashed. It's an effort to be sure, but it used to be an absolute necessity

4 GB RAM was the sweet spot a decade ago, but these days 16 GB RAM is the new sweet spot. It depends what kind of machine you're using. I have a 2009 MacBook Pro with 4 GB RAM, running Mac OSX El Capitan. This machine was optimized for 4 GB RAM back in the day, and generally, any programs or systems that would exceed its memory limits simply aren't compatible with this machine. The main reason for this differentiation is due to my old 2009 MacBook Pro CPU being based on 32-bit architecture (which can only handle a maximum of 4 GB RAM anyway), while newer processors have now upgraded to 64-bit, which in turn, consume more memory than their predecessors because they can handle infinitely larger amounts of RAM. With that in mind, this 2009 machine doesn't typically exceed its RAM limits even when I'm working with fairly complex music productions and running multiple programs at once. I never had any latency issues recording live instruments and little to no memory issues when mixing and rendering. That being said, newer systems are optimized for higher RAM limits. So if you're trying to get by with 4 GB RAM on a newer machine with a newer operating system, and trying to run the latest version of Pro Tools, you'll probably run into performance issues with only 4 GB RAM, as 8 GB RAM is the bare minimum these days when working with DAW's.

There's no "right" answer for how much RAM someone needs, the first question should always be "what do your projects look like, how many VST instances are you running on average per project and WHICH VST's?" using more than 16GB is pretty easy with larger, complex projects. I'm not running 8 x 4GB sticks and 32GB seems to work best for my uses.
