His Immigration stance and comments are on point. I’m an immigrant myself and took me 14 years to finalize my legalization process. Also thousands of dollars. And my sister is a citizen. It’s not easy nor a straight path. We need skilled labor and Americans are not willing to do these jobs for what immigrants are willing and Happy to. We need them/us.

No one gets paid if roofs aren’t getting sold. Secondly you’re only as good as your worst install. The truth is you have to have a system that benefits the sales guy, the crew and the customer.

Great perspective in this vid. I grew up roofing for my dad's company making $15-$18 per hour during high school and it was enough to save up and give me a good jump start to making an income and being able to save some decent money to start a life. Knowing the hard work of roofing I love hearing that if crews are working hard and being efficient that there's a possibility to make 6 figures in this industry. If I would have known that back then I would have probably started my own crew haha.

Being successful is paying your workers, Sub contractors good $$, a salesmen can promise the bells and whistles but if installers a garbage poor quality it reflects back to company. It's a team effort. Pay and take care of your shinglers 40$ per hour or peice work everybody's happy. Everybody makes $$. It's a joint venture.

I feel that there wasn’t enough argument here in behalf of sales guys. Sales is underestimated so easily by labor workers. Being successful in sales isn’t just being a good talker, being SUCCESSFUL in sales requires deep understanding of communications and psychology not even including the self discipline and exhausting persistence, negotiating tactics etc. There’s a lot of struggle in sales before becoming decent at it and then on top of going through the filthy people in the industry before running into a real opportunity to exercise your skill set that you’ve mastered. I feel that installers should be more organized in order to be able to increase their individual value when negotiating their pay. It’s a complex topic but I don’t feel the argument is made enough for why sales people make what they make.

Sales always. For a few reasons. Most companies have in depth training programs for sales. Not so much with the labor sides. Maybe a few orientation videos. You can train a salesman in a month. It'll be about a year before you have a good roofer trained.

The argument between installers and sales as to what we're worth is as old as houses. The reality is that a roofing company can't survive and grow without people who are great at both. In my company a salesman and a senior installer make roughly the same percentage of revenue. A young salesman who isn't as skilled will sell less and make less. And a young labourer will have to learn and pay his/her dues to achieve the value of a senior installer who is fast and reliable. Once they master their craft, both will do very well and have a beer together at the end of the day.

We had a slick sales guy bid a small roof at the resort I work at doing maintenance. Promised the moon and stars, was not a cheap price tag. A 10 man Mexican crew did the job. Hard working guys, in and out in one day. Quality was not very impressive but speaking too the income disparity, the guys taking the risks and working the hardest probably didn’t see much of that money.

As a small roofing company owner In Canada a lot has to do with owners... why would anyone want to roof when they can work min wage at $15 to start vs 16-24 roofing and not have year round work. I pay my employees very well and even then it’s hard to find new employees to expand. At least employees that are professional at work. And the the uninsured unreliable roofing contractors underbidding jobs.

I’ve always said that sales positions are typically overcompensated. Getting the work done is by far the most difficult part of our work. In most cases is not really sales, as much as it is about estimating and communicating well with the customer. When most people call a roofing company they already need to repair or replace a roof. So it’s not like your selling something that people don’t already need. Now a storm restoration model with door knocking may be organized a bit differently. In a mostly retail roofing company, the installers and production side of the company is by far more important and less available than those who want to do sales.

It's the same in most trades.......carpet installations, new showers/baths/kitchens, painting, siding, gutters.......you name it, that's just the way it is in the construction/ reconstruction industry. Many small owners have one or two salespeople and that's enough for the whole year.

installers face a very real risk of injury or death from falls, and owners have the costs of insurance, bonding, safety, workman s comp and the like. that aspect was not explored in this segment. Yet the retail consumers push for the lowest price puts owners and installers at higher risk, while insurance industry relentless advertising fir low price insuranco only feeds the low price mentality of consumers.

Everytime is becoming more popular for HOMEOWNERS to hire subcontractors since they do the same job because most of contractors thats what they do hire subcontractors to do their jobs, so makes no sense no pay double or triple for a job that a subcontractor can do it for 200 %0 or 300% less. For example a contractor makes $500 to $600 per sq and they hire a subcontractor and pay him from 70$ to 100$ per square. You guys do the math

They promised to install the roof in 4-6 weeks, of course they were late. When they finally showed up without the proper equipment and they damaged my property. Sad part is that my poor wife found the damage after coming home from her frontline COVID job. Broke my heart to see how upset she was when she saw the damage! SHAME ON HY-GRADE! They are really proud of the “Quality Audit” that they do, but of course they won’t give you a copy of the audit…lol BTW - the “Quality Audit” they did at my house consisted of 2 guys coming over to pick up the leftover junk they left at my house for a month. Lol, do you have a life? First of all not all people need $400k. Every market is different, motivation is different. Why would I fire someone who makes a $200k? I have seen guys who make $500k but took their life’s because they were on drugs and ruined their lifes. I would rather have 5 happy sales guys who make $150k each than one who makes $500k but all over the place “chasing big ballers money”

When you live in Fairfax County, the richest area pretty much in the world, you got to make over 400k. Sold almost 9 million last year just to stay afloat... Where I work one will get fired if not selling at least 5 million... was just making a comment... let me know if you want me to come teach your company how to really produce. Don't hate brother.

Teach us almighty. Smell BS from a mile away. Sold $9m to stay afloat? Maybe sell at higher profit margins to make a living
