In this video, I show you exactly how much you would have to invest in order to live off of SCHD dividends. SCHD is my favorite dividend ETF. My personal investing goal is to one day live off of dividend income, and this in depth analysis uses a financial model to find the exact amount it would take.

As opposed to number of people on here sucking up saying "great job.. love the answer to your question", as a person about to enter retirement the answer to your title question was wrong. The question should have been - how many years do you have to save to retire on dividends from SCHD? Because in the end you said a lot of people are wrong about how much they need - but that was incorrect too. You were right showing the first graph showing 1.3 million being needed.. and 99% of people can't accomplish that, if retiring today.

i love this, but to be honest, i think it should be around 7% price growth IF we're lucky. dividends will most likely be capped eventually too, but what can offset and help us reach our goal faster is i presume over time, the financially savvy individual will make more and can contribute more than $1k later on

That's the issues with these videos. They make some insane assumptions. I don't see where he accounts for taxes. I think a more realistic assumption should be 5% growth(inflation adjusted) and a yield of 2.5% over the span of anything over 15 years.

this is just a tangent to the main point of the vid, but: so when you compute average rate of return, it is not correct to add up percentages and do a linear average what you should do is take the geometric mean. or in other words, take the total return and rescale it to a yearly return as if it was compounding. that gives you the constant value that when assumed, results in the same total return over that period. so for example where you had 166.55% total return over 10 years, rescale this to (1 + 1.6655)^(1/10) = 1.103, or 10.3% return per year. If you compound 10.3% per year for 10 years you'll end up with 166.55%

Great analysis im watching this etf. Two quick points, i do not think 12% growth rate on dividend is realistic esp because it hasn't even been in existence long enough to project ahead that far. Maybe 8 or 9% growth would be my hope. Also it does not pay monthly so an income investor could not practically live off this one fund alone. But i think it work well with other income stocks. Most of the growth in dividends and yields were from the increase in stock price and the high interest environment. It doesn't make sense to say dividends will continue to grow, mathematically. I don't have your models downloaded, but from the screens I see, that would mean in year 20, the SCHD dividend yield would be 4.3% and would continually increase to 4.7% in year 30. That does not make sense at all. The yield has never been over 4.3% and that was for 1 month. I think using something like the average SCHD yield would make a lot more sense.

Great analysis. Thanks for the spreadsheet. But, can you please include what dividend payment available after taxes. Of course, it depends on what tax bracket you are. The higher the taxes your pay (state and federal) can significantly reduce your amount available to spend. Would it be more advantageous if you buy growth stock companies and then sell stock when you need it, and pay lower taxes (i.e, longterm capital gain taxes)? Can you please do a video on this. Thanks.

Per the SCHD website, as of 2022, 100% of dividends that are provided from SCHD are considered qualified dividends, therefore it would be taxed at the same rate as a long-term capital gain. The only question you have to answer is - Would you rather sell your stock, losing the value forever, or get dividends while leaving the principal alone.
@theowenssailingdiary5239
@theowenssailingdiary5239 Жыл бұрын
When companies pay dividends you DO lose that 'principal' straight off the share price-and you lose it forever. Its the same as selling a set number of shares every month/quarter or whatever. The Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF (SCHD) is still having a rough go of it in 2023. Its -2.3% year-to-date return and as last year was also negative. My current retirement objective is to get permanent cash from dividends, so this is not a good choice for me. Looks like this year someone in Schwab made a bad reconstitution of stocks that made the performance worst, so you end depending also on how in Schwab this is done and if they screw up they are make sure in the contract that are not accountable. Schwab will have to be serious about reconstitution of stocks and earn our trust.

Finally a video that accounts for inflation in cost of living. I’m so tired of seeing videos of people thinking dividends 30 years in the future is equivalent to the same NPV now. The main issue though that still isn’t addressed is this. Who is okay with $48k/year retirement, but also has an extra $1k/month to put into an ETF? The two seem mutually exclusive. Anyone who has a spare $1k/ month to put into an ETF would probably expect at least $100k/yr retirement.

Assuming you are in the middle class, tax should be 20-24%. Just make sure your dividend is 20% or more before you retired. I would do at least 1.5x of what you need before you retired.

@@Dividendology While true why not show the 20% missing just so people are aware.... Also why assume 12% return but not assume something like 4% or maybe a little higher just so the numbers look more likely over time.

I love the video, but what about things seniors can do if they don't have 20 or 10 years left? I know people who are going back to school at the age of 80 and working their best to improve their lives. What can those people do with perhaps a 5-year span? Just a thought when it comes to dividends.

Awesome assumption of price growth of 12% each and every year forever. In year 20 you somehow paid in 248k but the account value is almost 1.7m. Add the 395k from dividend re-investments, and the fund has magically grown by 1m on its own in 20 years. With that kind of assumption, I'll be rich in twenty years, thanks bro!

Your spreadsheet model does not take into the possibility that the retiree has no plan to bequeath the investment to anyone. In 20 years when he retires, assuming he lives for another 25 years, he wants to live off the dividends and incrementally selling off the SCHD shares. So if this person starts buying shares of SCHD now, in 20 years, how much contribution does he need to make monthly into buying SCHD with automatic reinvestment?

Turn off the drip and get quarterly $$$ into your brokerage account from the payments. Being a qualified dividend is the tax advantage portion that really makes it a great ETF.

just look at the total value. it is 1.7 mil. that is when he could live off of the dividends. 1.7m = 6k per month. if you need less than 7k, you just find the lower number on his chart. I have to account for my tax, so I need 20% higher. If you don't have the money, you just got to put in the time and invest monthly till you hit the 1.7m mark.

Great video and I love how reinvesting dividend can help grow over time. However, this doesn't account for taxes that are required every year based on those dividend payments. Not much of an issue when your first growing your portfolio but will become harder as the profits grow. Would love to see another video accounting for separating the 15% taxes and reinvesting the difference. If there's a way to avoid paying taxes by reinvesting or a special account that can be used would be a great addition to add.

Put it in a Roth IRA problem solved. Only issue is the monthly amount currently can’t be 1000 per month. Maybe a combo of Roth and Brokerage. I’m not a fan of tax deferred, which miraculously turns capital gains and tax favored dividends into ordinary income.

@@michaelswami I have a Roth IRA issue is max contribution is $6500 for the year in this example he’s using $12k per year. Honestly, I would probably save the dividends in a brokerage because I would rather have the money while I’m young and can enjoy it vs having to wait until 60 to start living.
