I will NEVER forget that Toby Fox gave us Deltarune chapter 2, A great step up from chapter 1 in terms of quality, music, Boss battles and lore for FREE!! Simply because fans were not having a great year. He did say we have to pay for chapters 3 and 4, But that price will be worth it, ESPECIALLY after the awesomeness of chapter 2.

makes me think of some of the total war games. even if the base game is super cheap. Thrown in all the dlc and even while on sale, can still be 40 or more if you care about having all the content for what is a rather old game. Which can be a big turn off to some folk and turn them away from giving a game a try. Just due to still costing an arm and leg years later. Which is why certain indie titles might be more appealing. Given they can be way cheaper and in some cases, less buggy and more stable than a triple a title.

I don't think the ballooning budgets are just because of games taking longer and needing more resources to make, but also because most of the big studios are run by businessmen and not gamers now. And when it comes to more creative fields (film, music, games, etc), business-types are known to just throw increasingly more absurd amounts of cash at problems instead of actually figuring out what their projects need.

Its the same problem hollywood is facing. Nobody asked for ever single game to have a massive budget, crammed with every feature and game mode you can think of and several years of constant updates, just like nobody asked for every movie to have bleeding edge VFX and a star-studded cast. Games, like movies, are expensive because publishers decided to make it that way.

And they keep it that way because your average consumer keeps paying for it. Not the average Steam reviewer, or anyone else who actually posts comments, but your stock-standard parent, teen or whatever who doesn't understand any better. They do *know* about in-game stores, ads and all the other reasons against $70USD, but they never *understand* that's a bad thing nor apply any practice. Most of your relatives, peers, coworkers and strangers cannot fathom any alternatives to shovelling out the cash for a game - or even boycotting.

No. That's a horrible idea. One benefit behind indie games is how accesible they are compared to AAA games. Not only do they require fewer resources, but also cost less. Like 10-20 dollars. By making them 60 to 70$, you will take away such accessibility to the people, and it will also leave incredibly high expectations and standards to a genre of games that isn't known for reaching such standarda. Like, imagine if you find a 2d pixel art game that is good enough. Now make it cost 70$. The game is good, yes. But not 70$ good. In fact, by making them 70$, you are also showing a greedy side to, again, a genre that isn't known to that. Which will harm more indie games, as they will have a terrible reputation. Don't get it twisted; i'm not defending AAA games. In fact, i do agree with your point of *(SOME)* AAA games costing 30$. But if i see a 70$, i may as well expect a 70$ masterpiece. Indie games are great. Some are masterpieces. But most of them are not 70$ masterpieces. No. In fact, no videogame should cost 70 to begin with! 60$ was already too much!!

As long as people buy games on release, studios will keep increasing the prices, it's simple as that. I think one of my favourite instances of game pricing is the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series. Recently, this year, "Yakuza: Like a Dragon" didn't just go on sale, it had permanently went down in price. The game, which released in november of 2020, had went from £54.99 to £15.99. This is only a 4 year old game, and RGG Studios/SEGA decided to permanently lower the price. They should cost what people are willing to pay for them. Having a standard price is a good marketing strategy, but ultimately, if you increase the prices too much, you will only cater to rich gamers. Steam's sales strike a great balance. Those who want to play the game right away will buy it full price. Those who kedp an eye on it (thus wanting it) and wait will get a serious discount, and those who buy at launch, missing out on most reviews, will usually get it at a launch discount.

They should stop using inflation as an excuse, especially when your customers aren't getting cost of living pay increases each year to keep up with inflation. If you made $40,000 a year in 2006, you were making more than if you make $50,000 today. So a game costing $60 back then was still cheaper than a $70 game is for people today. That's not even factoring in how many games are sold with content cut for day 1 DLC or future expansions, all the microtransactions, or the insane amount of $100 - $200 launch editions with bonuses... Also, that doesn't factor in that companies make WAY more from digital games today than the predominantly physical games they sold nearly 20 years ago.
@TheBcoolGuy
@TheBcoolGuy Ай бұрын
@@corey2232 I agree and I forgot to include that in my original comment, though it would've perhaps not been concise enough. It's a thought I've had for quite a while. This giant game model is just financially unsustainable. It probably would've already collapsed if it weren't tradition. Inflation makes us poorer than we were before and regulations and many other shady things make the market really, really difficult to get ahead in. If people had serious money, they'd have power and freedom. I won't rant about this stuff here, but it is an important part of the puzzle. With love. -TheBcoolGuy

For example, the 4080 founder edition in Norway cost as much as the 4080 super founders edition in the us. The ps5 pro cost 699$ according to walmart. In Norway, the ps5 pro cost 916$. Just a few years ago, i could buy 2 games for 100$ in Norway. Now i can barerly buy 1 game for the same price. The prices for everything now costs to so much, that gaming is now one of the most expensive hobbies. The only way i was able to get a 1tb steam deck, was that a store had a opening sale. They sold steam deck 64gb for 360$. I managed to get my hands on one of them. I found a 1tb ssd on amazon for less than 100$ and got someone to change the steam deck drive with my 1tb ssd, that cost me around 63$. And i also purchased a screen protector and a 500gb sd card. And with all of that i only paid a bit over 600$. Thats 400$ dollar diffrence between my steam deck and the 512gb steam deck. And i have 3 times the disc space and mine is also a lot faster

If I said a restaurant meal costs a lot because it's cooked by a talented, passionate chef using fresh ingredients and will taste absolutely delicious... That same argument does not apply to a crappy McDonalds meal that costs the same amount. Yet with videogames, a game of the year winning title can easily cost the same, if not less, than a title nowhere near worth your time. Best thing I ever did with gaming was get into classic and retro titles. I can walk out of a pre-owned games shop with a pile of 10+ different videogame titles and it costs me less than half what a more recent game would.

You know the worst part about this for me? In the UK, we used to have actual parity with the US costs when adjusted for our currency. We paid £40 when you guys paid $50, £50 when you guys paid $60, and it all roughly evened out. For some reason, and its really crazy to me that nobody talks about this, we've now been put at the exact same number despite the difference in our currencies. So we paid the equivalent of the price the US customer had, and then you guys got a $10 increase to $70. Okay then. Well, publishers decided they could get away with new games being the same number - £70 over here, resulting in us now paying around $92 equivalent at the time of writing, when less than 5 years ago we were paying around $60. Doesn't help that take-home pay here is lower than it's ever been. It's an absolute disgrace.

Dont completely disagree but back when we paid 40 and usa paid 50 the pound was a long stronger of a currency. Now its more 1 for 1 in terms of conversion. In 2009 for example £1 = $1.90, currently its £1 = $1.20. I still dont think we should be paying the same price but i qlso just dont think we can talk about this without talking about the fact the pound is no where near as strong of a currency as it used to be.

I'd say indie games can range from 15 USD to 30 USD, Triple A's can be 40 USD to 60 USD, and Double AA's can be somewhere in between the 15 to 60 USD. unless Double A doesn't actually exist. In my honest opinion, Rockstar Games is a perfect example of the way Triple A games should be. Master crafted, lots of time to tend to, constantly improving, and really trying to put the money where their mouth is. Ubislop or Ubisoft is a perfect example of what Triple A games shouldn't be. Produced in short time, sloppy craftsmanship, putting overkill amounts of money into the wrong things, improving barely anything or the wrong things, and not really giving 100% into the project, more like 50% or less. Don't be like Ubisoft.

If You’re giving me an unfinished game with tons of bugs, poor performance, quippy and annoying dialogue, boring gameplay, and a boring story for 60-70 dollars, you can get lost. Plus they also don’t need to make disc anymore if they don’t want to, so the price hikes are definitely just the board wanting to up their investments.

I'm not even paying 50$ for big budget games, because I don't trust the companies making them. The only games I'd pay full price for, are indie games, because I know they're more likely to price it at what they actually think is worth, and they're not raising prices to overpay their greedy CEOs because they don't really have them. Games used to be better quality, but now they're just more expensive... It's a shame that the younger generation will never understand what they're missing.

See, the difference now vs before (at least regarding AA and AAA games) was that in order for a game to be successful, it had to be good and complete. If you published a blatantly unfinished game, there was no way to patch it and the game would not sell well. Nowadays, publishers can release blatantly unfinished dumpster fires of games under the guise that “it’s a live service game and it’ll get better” which has happened so often to the point where modern gamers just accept it. Releasing a game for $70 that is missing features that need to be added back in over the course of several months is unacceptable and the game is not deserving of that price. This is probably why we’re seeing a rise in indie titles recently which often have more polish for a cheaper price

Baldurs Gate 3, Phantom Liberty, Red Dead Redemption 2, Shadow of the Erdtree ... I would have even given them more than asked, for these probably once in a decade type of games and expensions The problem is, others would start to see the willingness of people to purchase products at these prices and than they'd make their next Shit of Duty or Fifa "We didn't change anything 2025" cost as much aswell. Also, I think for many a large part of the "development" budget is spent on marketing
