I dig your content and channel. I agree about allocating money for a great trailer, poster, and unit publicist. I however think focusing on landing a 'big distributor' isn't always helpful, because it can still get overlooked if they have other films they push harder for release. A few friends experienced this after premiering at big festivals and wish they had self-distributed, in which case having some money for P&A set aside would have been useful. And that would have also helped them in negotiations with the distributors.

That's true, there's still a lot of variables at play that determine whether your film will be successful with a distributor. I've done both and my view is that working with a distributor yields better results, particularly when you take into account the amount of time that goes into self-distribution

This is great advice. Marketing a film is a major challenge for low budget movies. But you made a great point about finding the right distributor to pass the film off to. What’s the name of that trailer company in Australia 🇦🇺?

Very interesting topic and point of view. It’s totally possible a filmmaker could create posters and the trailers and other promo materials other than production stills. Rodriguez actually shoots his own posters and promo content during production. He edits his films too. In his podcast episode on the Tim Ferris Show he talks about all these things. He finds his posters turn out better that the poster company ones as the characters look correct due to being shot during production.

Yep you can totally do more, it's really a matter of whether you can beat what a company will do. The best companies can generate some really solid trailers/posters
