this is why i rarely buy drum gear new unless it's hardware. Everything is too expensive new and lots of times you get greatly discounted gear on mint condition stuff or just open box stuff if you look hard enough. I just recently bought an Iron Cobra 900 Hi Hat stand that came brand new in the original box with everything included, even the manuals for almost half the price.

I think Tama's SLP line of snares have the best value per dollar, especially in the used market. There are a ton of options and most are around $300-400.

Honestly around $1000 for a kit is a good all around kit. Cymbals and hardware vary depending on taste. $500ish on a snare. Don’t forget the used markets either

A few years ago I'd agree. $1000 right now gets you a Gretsch Catalina, PDP Concept, etc. which are great kits, but something many would want to upgrade from eventually. $1000 used is game on for sure.

One other to consider, the Yamaha Stage Custom Birch, where I think you would be at the same level, but for even less money. A 5 piece would run about $850 or so, including a decent snare. Even those, sound amazing for the money. I just visited a blues jam where the drummer hosting provided his set, and I couldn't believe how great they sounded. Just a thought.

You made some good choices..... I would and have recommended Yamaha Stage Custom or Tour Custom with their Crosstown hardware and a kick pedal. Yamaha 700 series is great and I believe less expensive than DW 5000. I agree on Zildjian cymbals, Sabian also has great prices. Paiste and Istanbul are more...not sure about Meinl I don't have any of that brand. Great advice on the throne and the heads (I prefer Aquarian) You are absolutely right that brand is far less relevant than many people believe. This is a video every young and new drummer should see. Very solid advice.

I don't own them either, but have played them: the Meinl Pure Alloy pack is around the same price point as the A Sweet Ride set mentioned in the video ($899 USD). The Classic Customs are too much like the Zildjian S Family and the Byzance are at the K / HHX price point and quality point: absolutely amazing, but diminishing returns over the set mentioned in the video. As for heads, I'm personally an Evans stan, but there's plenty to love from all three manufacturers. Find the heads that help you make the sounds you want and play 'em

Good topic, and I think you’re right about the point of diminishing returns. What they say is for most people, it’s not worth spending more. But for some of us, it’s always going to be worth it, depending on our situation or what we hear when we play. For someone that’s on cymbals, for another on snare drum, for some on premium double bass pedals. This is super useful if you’re relatively new to drums, the total spend in 2024 is staggering, even at this sweet spot you describe.
@icerag

Excellent recommendation! I will follow your advice (if buying new to keep for decades) with a few changes: Use 2-leg hi-hats and get double pedals (double peds have become reasonably priced and are quite essential in modern drumming). Even DW 2000/3000 series double peds are of excellent quality. I've had mine for 10+ years with no issues -- still mint. Vic Firths are great but honestly are very expensive name-branded. Getting 5A 4-pack Vaters or SP Labs will cost only around 7 USD per pair with little to no quality loss.

Good video. I think you hit at pretty good price points on all points. As someone else pointed out, if you’re gigging, you will need to get some cases which would add around$400 onto the price. The used market is a wonderful thing that you missed on here. You could build a similar or better kit on the used market for around $2,500. If you’re just starting out and have the money, it might make sense to go new since you may not have the requisite skills to evaluate used drums. From what I’ve been seeing on the used market recently, you can easily get cymbals for about 40% of the new cost and most drum sets for 60% of retail. If you’re patient you can do better than that. Over the weekend I picked up a Zildjian K hybrid crash for $120. New, those retail for $365.

My kit is a DW Collector's Series maple SSC kit with a specially satin oil cherry to black fade. 6 piece (two up two down) with DW 3000 series hardware mostly, but two 9700 boom stands, a pork pie throne and Paiste 2002 cymbals. It's overkill, but I got an utterly unreal deal on it. Seriously. I don't think anyone has or will ever get a deal like I got😊

Very interesting. It made me look over what I have and reaffirm what I bought but with a few caveats... If I could do it over again, I'd get: DW 6000 hardware but with a 9000 hi-hat and kick pedal ( I friggin love how easy it is to nest those flat bottom stands together while remaining so stinkin' clean and sturdy enough to easily hold a 24" ride) 26" kick instead of a 24" kick. I bought what I thought would be more acceptable rather than what I really wanted. Hard lesson there. Get that 18" tom when I bought the kit instead of later. It's later and I still haven't bought it. And that's about it... I have a Ludwig Legacy Mahogany 13, 16, 24 and a 8x14 black beauty 22 thin low and 20 thin low K Cons, 20" Istanbul traditional crash, and a 16" set of crashes for hi-hats, A-Custom projection on bottom, K thin dark on top. Excellent, excellent, pair of crashes to use as hi-hats. I use an assortment of heads that I've come to love, Remo Vintage Emperor for tom batters, Aquarian Power center reverse dot on snare batter, Super kick 2 on kick batter, Aquarian snare-side head and classic clear for tom resos. Aquarian Regulator for kick reso. I bought the cymbals back in 2014, still haven't cracked them and I played hard when I need to. Bought the kit in 2017 or 2018. Total spent on everything was about $5k. I'm sure pricing on all that is very different now but it was a different time back then.

Almost 1 year ago I decided I would become a drummer. I watched a few reviews online and ended up going to my local music store and picking out a Tama Imperial Star. Granted I'm no expert here but I feel like it's a pretty good kit for a beginner. My major complaint about that kit is the drum throne was absolutely terrible. I sat on it for 3 months being miserable before I finally upgraded to a Spinal G Ahead. I love that thing. Then I found myself often practicing at night and I didn't want to bug my neighbor so I went out and bought a Ronald td-17kvx2. That wasn't cheap. Then I wanted to upgrade my kick pedal and hi-hat stand so I bought a Tama Speed Cobra 310 hi-hat stand and a Speed Cobra 910 pedal. Then I decided to upgrade the rack on my e-kit, add a splash cymbal, upgrade the floor Tom. On the acoustic set I put new batter heads on it and add another crash with a stand. I wish somebody would have told me drumming is so damn expensive lol. At some point I want to buy new symbols for my acoustic set but I'm tired of spending money. Plus I should probably get better at the drums first of all 😂

My Pearl accustic kit sounds great, and I do use it on stage. I think total with hardware, hi-hat, 3 crashes, 2 rides, and a china I spent around $1,250.00 total. Higher-end drums would have cost a lot more but would not necessarily sound better enough to justify paying what they want. For home practice(and I have used them live), I do have a high-end e-kit that is a little over double what I paid for my accustic kit. I think $4,862.87. Is a little expensive for a good drum kit. Sure, you could even pay more for a drum set, but I do not feel it is necessary to spend more than half of what you feel a good drum set should cost. There are videos demonstrating a cheap drum set and comparing it to a more expensive "high-end" drum set. The higher-end drum kit does sound a bit better, but the cheaper drum set once miked up, and EQed sounded pretty darn good and could definitely be used live. These days, most people, especially musicians, are not making tons of money like they once did, and with the cost of living going up like crazy it is hard to save up enough to spend tons on a drum set or any instrument. Most musicians these days have a job on the side of their band or are in multiple bands just to make enough money to live on, so spending even $4,872.87 for a drumset is tough and I do not think it is nessasary. Yes, there is a point where spending more than $4,872.87 on a drumset does not nessasarily get you a better sounding drumset. Those usually are made out of exotic woods and have expensive hardware. Playing drums is more expensive than playing most other instruments as the cost of replacing sticks, drum heads, and cymbals can add up, and so your $4,872.87 will end up costing more once you factory in the cost of the replacements. If I, for instance, spend $4,872.87 on a drum set, not only am I pretty much broke, and if I bust a head or a stick or, worse, a cymbal, I am screwed and will have to save up to replace them. If you spend what I did on a drumset, then you are not going to be totally broke and can budget in for the replacements. Also, your $4,872.87 for a drumset set was for drumset companies that are higher priced than other manufacturers as you are also paying for the name and reputation. In conclusion, you can get a more budget friendly drum set that will not break the bank and does sound fantastic(maybe not quite as good sounfing as a more expensive drum set, but very close), and definitely can be used live.

Buying new is already overspending. Personally I wouldn't even buy the items in this video used because you could get older pro gear for less. My first kit ever that is not only loud at gigs but records very well is a Pearl Fiberglass kit that I got for about $500. It's basically sounds like acrylic but you wont crack it from dudes moshing into your kit. If you have to buy new cymbals there are turkish cymbals companies that make cymbal packs for half the price and sound just as good if not better. Companies such as Istanbul Mehmet, Masterwork, Bosphorus, etc. For hardware I would recommed Tama Roadpro or older Pearl stands for the weight and over-engineering. for snares you gotta just get lucky, so far my shine snare drum is surprisingly cutting for being a maple shell. The real takeaway should be that great used gear exist and that new isn't worth it anymore.
