That is wise advice. I always discipled men and took men with me to do ministry. I grew up on a farm and our day was from 3:30 AM to 8:30 PM. If a cow was having a calf we might have to get up in the middle of the night. So one can imagine what I thought when I started pastoring. So many church leaders want a position, but not the responsibility of making disciples as Jesus commanded in Matthew 28:19, 20.

That’s a good advice but there’s also other ways to preach to edify the Church. Topical sermons have its place, Textual and of course exegetical. Certainly when you see how the apostles preach it wasn’t always exegetical - they would use a lot of OT references to make a point about Jesus. I think at the end of the day - preaching needs to accomplish one of these - encourage, rebuke, correct, instruct!

He was silent about homosexuality and abortion. He never even hinted at the existence of any science, nor teachings of medicine or hygiene that would have saved millions. We have no account of Jesus ever trying to correct prevailing beliefs that the earth was flat. Jesus never talked about heaven or surviving death. He never uttered a word in favor of industry, commerce, economy or of any effort to better our condition in this world. He cared nothing for painting, for sculpture, for music - nothing for any art. He said nothing about the duties of nation to nation, of king to subject, nothing about the rights of man and nothing about intellectual liberty or the freedom of speech. Jesus never said anything about slaves being free. And when he did talk about slavery he had no problem with talking about them being beaten or sold with their entire family- *but never did he say "free them!”* Jesus was biased toward the descendants of Jacob. He quietly chose 12 Hebrews to be his disciples, with not even 1 Gentile among them. Jesus the literate teacher never penned anything he himself said, and yet in all this deliberate and unconscionable muteness, it is what one would call *“being enlightened”?*

@@BeachsideHank You don't really know the bible or history too well, so let me see if I can clarify somewhat. How can you love your neighbor as yourself and keep them as a slave by modern standards of what a slave is. Why would Jesus speak of worldly things, when He came to teach heavenly things, knowing what we would discover and make without His input. Google "the Kingdom of heaven is like" and see how many times Jesus spoke of heaven, then google "outer darkness" to see a few of His warnings about Hell. Not sure what you mean by surviving death, we all die and face judgement, but will be risen again on the last day either into everlasting life or everlasting condemnation. The Catholic church didn't exist to force flat earth theory on people yet when Jesus was on earth. Jesus gave women divine revelation when He sent the Samaritan woman to tell Sychar about Him as well as Mary Magdalene to tell the 12 disciples that He had risen. Jesus was sent to the Jewish people first to fulfill the prophecy of Isaiah 53 "He came to His own, bit they received Him not", yet still healed the centurian's servant and the greek woman's daughter because they displayed great faith. Jesus sent Paul to the gentiles to bring them into the new covenant of grace by faith in Jesus. Freedom of speech and other rights are by the grace of God and don't last in a land that turns away from Him because this fallen world is filled with evil and deceit. Homosexuality is only one of many sins, and not one person is without sin, as the Bible clearly states. We are all condemned by our own evils great and small, but rather than punish us all when evil is to be wiped away, God came in the flesh to pay our penalty for us after living the perfect sinless life that we could not. He was whipped, beaten, and hung on a cross to take our punishment for us in the greatest and most selfless act of mercy in all of history. I do hope you will reconsider believing what the world tells of Jesus, because the lies run deep and we all suffer for it when people buy into them.

@@The_True_ I see a lot of over describing - an emotional and exaggerated amount of *irrelevant and immaterial* details of which had nothing substantial to do with the questions posed. You keep going circular and returning to the concept of "sin" in one form or another, let me educate you on that. Sin is an imaginary disease manufactured to sell an imaginary cure. *There is no such thing as 'sin'.* It is a completely arbitrary, illusory, artificial, capricious and irrational concept that varies according to which belief system is attempting to define it. Sin and blasphemy are non-existent states that actually *require* the existence of a God to be made real. There are 131 (or 133 or 136 "abominations" in the 'bible', depending on which version of "God's unchanging perfect word" one is investigating) - virtually all of which demand the death penalty. The notion of Original sin (which Jesus and the disciples never embraced.) is as *ridiculous* as imputed righteousness. It is immensely sad, supremely hypocritical and horrifyingly ironic how "believers" are perfectly willing to completely ignore all but one or two of them when they suddenly find it necessary to remind others over and over Ad nauseam how much they have the divine right to *hate* people who are different. One thing is for sure though, these bigots REALLY need to hope Jesus stays dead. *Sapient Wisdom:* Sin is a religious concept and a religious answer to a solely religious problem.

@@BeachsideHank I literally was answering your own accusations. Reading helps. After all, keeping people illiterate so they couldn't read their own bible is how men were able to use Christianity to do horrible things historically. That way the people would have to rely on the "experts" (priests) to interpret biblical truth for them. But sure, God comes down to earth to prepare people for a new world to come, and provides the way to get there with His own blood, but it not be good enough for you because He didn't teach us how to build a Tesla in biblical text. Sheesh. Jesus may not have stated how to build and operate a nation, or taught medicine, but then again He didn't need to since Moses had already received that information. Yet even with that very basic structure given to mankind, our greed and arrogance always caused failure. Nothing has changed.God gives us a brain, and people come up with ideas that could be helpful or harmful, and we generally lean towards harmful. Just look at atomic energy for an obvious example of that. If you can look at mankind and not see the evil, the sin, then you are truly blind.

This all sounds real good, and I get it, BUT I do wonder how much time the apostle Peter spent preparing for his message on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:14-41)? How much time did the apostles have to prepare for their message, the night before the angel of the Lord released them from prison and told them to go stand in the temple court "AGAIN" and proclaim the message of Christ (Acts 5:19-20). I wonder how much time Stephen spent preparing for his message before they stoned him to death (Acts 6:6 - Acts 7:60). And, I wonder how much time Philip spent preparing for his message with the Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8:26-35). Unlike our modern day Sunday preachers, these first century preachers - the "genuine" SHEPHERDS of God's flock were proclaiming Christ every day. Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ. Acts 5:42 Personally, I believe we are relying far too much on our human efforts and intellect, in stead of truly trusting the Holy Spirit.

@crossclarity423

@@Davisme1 John There is nothing wrong with an intelligent and respectful question. I sincerely appreciate your question. Iron sharpens iron. Your question: “Are you implying that the Holy Spirit will lead us to give a powerful sermon with very little preparation from our side?” 1. What exactly is a “powerful sermon”? If you say exactly what God tells you to say, is that a powerful sermon even if the people don’t like it, and/or fall asleep? Allow me to ask you some similar questions to the ones I asked in my initial comments: Did Peter preach a powerful sermon on the day of Pentecost? Did Peter and John preach a powerful sermon when they went up into the Jewish temple (Acts 3)? Did Stephen preach a powerful sermon before they stoned him? Did Philip preach a powerful sermon in the chariot of the Ethiopian eunuch? Did Paul preach a powerful sermon when the boy fell out of the window (Acts 20:7-10)? My point is, all messages from God won’t have the same dynamic effect, but if the words are truly from God, and you share them with others, that is all that matters. Go and tell people, your relatives, your friends, your neighbors, your classmates, your co-workers, and even your enemies about Jesus. God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness. That is why God chose average men that were not educated by the world’s standards. Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus. Acts 4:13 2. What exactly is a sermon anyway? You rarely if ever see the word SERMON used in the New Testament. The first century preachers WERE NOT concern with preparing sermons. They were simply proclaiming the truth from their life experiences with Jesus. “WHENEVER and WHEREVER” we open our mouths to speak (24/7), we should do it as though we are speaking the very words of God, just as 1Peter 4:11 says: If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen. 1Peter 4:11 So, if Christians were actually proclaiming the word of God whenever and wherever we are 24/7, as they did in the first century, why then is all this emphasis and attention placed on this 45-minute message on Sunday morning? A whole lot of Christians make it seem like the church pulpit, on Sunday morning is THE ONLY PLACE where God speaks. Sunday morning has become like the game of the week. Christians typically prepare, and rehearse for this big Sunday event. After it is over, they rest up for the next game. Though it is very common. It is not biblical. Do you know why the church was expanding in size every day of the week during the first century? Because the gospel was being proclaimed every day. It was a significant part of the lives, not a 1.5 hour event on Sunday morning. I just don’t think it is as deep or as “spiritual” as we make it sound. It is far more God than us. Paul recognized that. When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. 1Corinthians 2:1-2 I used to lead a teen and young adult ministry. We would gather on Friday nights. I sincerely believed that whatever I experienced during the week leading up to Friday was part of my preparation - that included everything, whatever I read or studied, things I watched on television, conversations I had, music I listened to, temptations that I encountered, and sins I committed. All of that was apart of God’s preparation for me to minister to the youth. Yesterday and today is always preparing me for tomorrow, if I am attentive to the Holy Spirit. FINALLY: I am not saying we should not pray, study, and research. That is definitely a part of preparation. Just don’t rely on it more than the ultimate power of the Holy Spirit. Remember, Moses initially doubted his ability to be God’s spokesman because he stuttered. And yes, God can have you to share a very powerful and effective message, even if you are unprepared. He is God. He would get all the glory in that, because you were not prepared. Don’t forget, He made a jack ass speak.

I hope I am being clear. I also agree that preaching is NOT just giving a message to the flock. It is so much more, so WHY do we place SO MUCH emphasis on that spot of time as if the other times are less sufficient? According to the Bible, the Bereans studied the scriptures EVERY DAY. Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. Acts 17:11 According to the scriptures, Paul had discussions with the disciples EVERY DAY, for two years. But some of them became obstinate; they refused to believe and publicly maligned the Way. Oh yeah, visit the sick and elderly in the nursing home and in their homes on Saturday while finding time to put the finishing touches on your sermons for Sunday. @@T.Ravikumar Yes, God does speak 24x7, but what you are saying is not biblical at all. The Holy Spirit does not speak, "human wisdom" 1 Cor 3:19. If there is no "set time" to read and pray, where is the discipline? (Mark 1:35). God can use a donkey to speak (Num 22:28-30), but He usually doesn't do that, and actually only did it once in history. At one time He spoke through His Son (Heb 1:2), yet today, God speaks to us through Scripture (2 Pet 1:19): if one is not reading Scipture, one is likely NOT hearing from God. We must avail ourselves to hear what God is saying, and that is the point of Dr. Lawson. Since you listened to him, I do hope you consider spending the time and putting in the work; if you do, you will see and come to understand what he is saying. @@russs3001 "Put in the work", that's exactly what the Old Testament unredeemed good folks were doing. They had a lot of discipline to follow. Incidentally discipline means self-control. The exact legalistic system of checks & balances that Christ has redeemed us from. Only those who've truly been born-again by experiencing the free gift through Grace in Jesus Christ will understand the freedom that Christ gives. Today there's no "putting in effort" (even to read the Word, as in this case) as a legalistic bondage/compulsion. Today the Savior indwells His children and leads them in whatever way He wants: 📚 Phil 2:13 "[Not in your own strength or effort] for it is God Who is all the while effectually at work in you [energizing and creating in you the power and desire], both to will and to work for His good pleasure and satisfaction and delight" That is why there'll be no boasting in anything that we may do, just one boasting in the Lord (Rom 3:27, 1Cor 1:31). The born-again believer is not the child of a slave but of the free woman (Gal 4:31), that's why Paul writes: 📚 Gal 5:1 "Stand firm therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and don’t be entangled again with a yoke of bondage (rules & regulations)" 📚 Col 2:23 "These things indeed appear like wisdom in disciplined worship, humility, and severity to the body, but aren’t of any value against the indulgence of the flesh" A dad-son relationship is different from a God-servant relationship. It's informal, spontaneous & always based on love, even the discipline of the Lord (Heb12:5,6). 📚 Rom 8:14,15 "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are children of God. For you didn’t receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”"

@@jackykimes I agree with you. God allows me to give a weekly small group bible study for 75 minutes on Tuesday nights. I make it my business to prepare beforehand. God is not a god of disorder. I'm feeding Jesus's sheep; that's a big deal. My job, my goal is that God will be glorified and brothers and sisters edified. I spend time praying, reading the text, finding appropriate references and using several commentaries to get a solid idea of what verses are saying. I want the brothers and sisters to recognize that l'm not speaking on my own authority. I also prepare questions to stimulate participation from those in attendance. If I don't take bible study seriously how can I expect the hearers to do so? As far as being led by the Holy Spirit, part of the fruit of the Spirit is self-control. It's not God's will that I just "wing it" in the name of the Lord. Having structure helps me to give the hearers, most of whom are employed and/or parents, what they need from the word in just the right amount of time. It would be inconsiderate and unloving for me not to do so. That's not being led by the Holy Spirit.

@@kkaalaas nonsense. It's nothing to do with the kind of church one goes to. If a person stands up in the pulpit having not prepared, what you get is unclear rambling repetitive waffle. The Holy Spirit does not bless the lazy and arrogant person who thinks they only need to show up.

What about spend no time at all. Why do you need to tell others what is in the bible? Use your morning to exercise so you can stay fit and healthy and the rest of the day look after your family.

Thanks for the advice but no. I can spend the rest of my life exercising and cancer or something else hits me and then die or spend a lot of time taking care of your family and they get killed by a drunk driver in an accident and you can’t do anything about it. You live for the moment, we who believe live for eternity. To answer you question why spend time telling others about the Bible is because God wants people like you to be saved, if possible. Most likely you will find the answer to that question in eternity before God himself when is going to be way too late. Anyway you are just trolling here and if you don’t believe go look for like minds that think like yourself and show respect for other people’s opinion. I’m pretty sure you like to be respected.

@@mohanlalrampersad490 We all die. It's that inevitably which we warn to be prepared for. This fallen world is temporary, vanity, but the world after this is eternal. We just want that to be eternal joy for people, rather than eternal punishment for the evils we all do. Jesus is the only way to that eternal joy in the presence of God, He paid the price for our sin on the cross to make that happen. I know you see the evil in the world. Greed, selfishness, envy, hate, theft, lies, all things that we all are guilty of in some way or another. We want people to be free from these things, but only the power and grace of God can do that for us. I do hope you reconsider God's offer one day, and come to Jesus who paid for that mercy in full.

Prayer Closet Life first Holy Propitious Manna from Heaven Bread of Life Flowing Living Waters Holy Scriptures Bible Beavers 🦫 We may excuse the spiritual poverty of our preaching in many ways, but the true secret will be found in the lack of urgent prayer for God’s presence in the power of the Holy Spirit. There are preachers innumerable who can deliver masterful sermons after their order; but the effects are short-lived and do not enter as a factor at all into the regions of the spirit where the fearful war between God and Satan, heaven and hell, is being waged because they are not made powerfully militant and spiritually victorious by prayer. The preachers who gain mighty results for God are the men who have prevailed in their pleadings with God ere venturing to plead with men. The preachers who are the mightiest in their closets with God are the mightiest in their pulpits with men.
