I used the explanations you gave on how to remove salt bridges and then it helped me find more info on how to sanitize my water softer; it led me to reading the kenmore manual. Now, I'm confident that my water softener is squeaky-clean and ready for years of use to come.

Hi Gary, you are the most credible and thorough voice on water softeners that I've been able to find and I appreciate all your videos. I need some guidance. Our family just moved into a new house and we have a pretty old (1998-99 from what I can gather) softener unit. I understand how water softeners in general work but I really don't know what I'm doing. I could provide some more details about the unit, but I guess my main questions are: 1) There appears to be some kind of salt in the brine well (inside the brine tank), filled to the top. Is this normal? 2) When we moved in, there was always about an inch of water above the salt level or it was about even. Last night I ran a manual recharge and as of 14hrs later, there appears to be no visible water in the brine tank. Is this a problem? 3) I'm tempted to just start fresh, pull everything out of the brine tank, run some iron out through, and see what happens. Should I do this? Thanks for your time. Any insight or advice would be much appreciated. Our house is well-water fed if that matters. Please help us!
@GarytheWaterGuy
@GarytheWaterGuy 3 жыл бұрын
Hello, thank you for the questions 1) No, there should be absolutely no salt in the brine well whatsoever. 2) Yes it is. 3) You can but just clearing the salt out of brine well and making sure the float is freed up should work.

Many videos describe how there are many factors to consider when determining how much water is supposed to be in the brine tank (or not). None I have found explain how the water is supposed to get into the tank in the first place either pre or post. No matter what the cycle, on my Clack, water never enters the tank. My tank remains dry throughout the entire cycle, its surely will extract brine, but only if I manually put water into the tank first. I've checked the float valve and it appears to work, I've quadruple checked my fitting and run my tank without salt (there is no salt bridge) to confirm it, no water enters the tank. What could it be?

A pre fill water softener adds water as the first cycle during regeneration. Post fill add water as the last cycle. I would check your water softener programming against what I recommend in this video kzbin.infoc6r7qUK8to4

More pressingly, my water is always higher than my salt after a regen. When it started doing this, the other dirty water issue subsided. I checked brine line, injector and for a salt bridge. I am confused. You said (at 2:59) that "in this case it will use 9 pounds of salt per regeneration". A bag of salt is 40 pounds. Does that mean that you should roughly expect to put in a bag of salt in after every 4 regenerations? Also - I just had a brand new BWS softener installed and the plumber left it set at the default hardness of 20. (In fact he left all the settings at the default.) I tested the water with Hach hardness strips and it looks to me like the hardness of the "softened" water is 25 or so. Should I increase the water softener setting another 25 to a setting of 45 now to try to get it down to 0? I can not get the plumber to return my calls after paying him, so I'm on my own!!
@GarytheWaterGuy
@GarytheWaterGuy 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, this type of water softener will consume about one 40 lb bag after 4 regenerations. Typically the brine tank will hold several bags of salt. Sad storey about your plumbers service. The settings are based on the water before the water softener. Test the raw water and set the water softener based on it's hardness.

Hello Gary, this is my first home that has a well and septic. So a lot of it is new to me. I was informed by some neighbors that the water in my area is hard, which is why I have a water softener. So a couple months ago, the salt container ( by the way, I have a separate softener and brine tank), was about half full,and the water level in it was just about even with the salt. Checking it the other day, I noticed the tank is just about empty. Also noticed debris in the tank ( probably from dirty salt pellets). I would like to take my salt tank outside and rinse it out before I add more salt. My question is how much salt do I add to the tank (about half full?), and would I add water to it after adding the salt? Thank you for your help.

Hi Gary, I have a 60,000 grain softener with a 2 cubic ft resin bed, documents say I should use 20 lbs salt per regen, I have confirmed the salt setting in the clack ws1 control is correct. I am confused why the refill cycle adds 9 to 9-1/2 gallons of water to the brine tank, shouldn't this be more like 6-1/2 gallons being that a gallon of water absorbs 3 lbs of salt?

I'm not sure how to identify or choose the correct brine line flow control, the one I have in has the number "79" on the black washer. Hi Gary. Im stumped!! I have too much water in my Waterboss 950…almost to the top. I have watched all of your videos and followed the Troublshooting suggestions in the owners manual to no avail. I have competed the follow… removed and fully cleaned the injector assembly, removed and fully cleaned the brine valve assembly, checked and cleaned the air check/ draw tube, and confirmed that the drain is unobstructed and working. After cleaning, During regeneration i observe the following…water level was static during cycle 1(first back wash), water level increased in tank during cycle 2 (brine/ slow rinse), water level stayed static during 2nd backwash (cycle 3), water level i creased again during cycle 4 (brine refill). By the end of the regeneration cycles, the brine tank was full of water and the emergency shutoff kicked in. Any idea what the issue is and why the tank continues to fill and why water level never drops?? Much appreciated!

The problem is it isn’t drawing brine in the brine cycle. Did you reinstall the old injector or replace with a new one? The manufacturer always recommends replacement.

Gary. I replaced the injector assembly with all new parts and water level has not dropped. I have just removed the air tube assembly and tested the ball in the cage at the base of the assembly. The ball moves freely in the cage but when i immerse the ball and cage in a clear glass of water, the ball does not float to the top of the cage. Is this normal, should it float, or is the ball potentially damaged and therefore affecting the final cycle of the regeneration? Still stumped. Thx

Also, there is a high pitched squeal during stage 1 regeneration…any idea what this indicates? Many thanks

Problem solved…i replaced the entire safety shutoff assembly. Turns out that the ball in in the cage at the bottom of the aircheck had developed a crack and stopped floating in the cage as the water level rose in the tank… never unseating from the underlying port.

Hey Gary, i have a Manual water softener, Wondering how much salt and water should I add to the brine tank. Currently, I'm regenerating with 22 pounds of salt with 21 gallons of water every 3 days

I really do not know. You need to check with the manufacturer and they will need to know your water softener size, your water hardness and how much water you use daily.

Any idea why mine is filling up between cycles and going through salt super quick? If I run a recharge cycle it will properly drain. I checked the connections for clogs etc but everything seems to be good.

I have a Culligan salt system soft water, purchased 5 years ago. 1 year after purchase my water heater started leaking. Well it was 17 years old so didn’t think too much about it but did notice just after water softener. A new commercial grade, 50 gal tank installed. 4 years later tank completely rusted and leaking. Plumber said it’s the salt. Culligan says it’s the chlorine in the water. I do have high chlorine level. So I’m not sure what to do. Is it the salt or chlorine? Anyone have any advice? Thanks!

Did they test your water to see if the mineral content from the salt was abnormally high? Is the water softener set correctly for your waters hardness?

Hi Gary love your videos. I have a well system and my iron is high. I bought a softner to lower the hardness and to or try to eliminate the iron. Its a sxt 5600 and I use iron salt in tank. I put in 3 bags which comes up to almost 3/4 to top and it worked awesome all my problems went away. It's been 4-5 months and water is slightly orange. I set my settings to auto degen. every 4 days around 2am but I don't think enough salt goes in the brine tank to clean out because out of those 3 bags I only used up about 1 bag so far from original. Am I doing something wrong? I need help Gary😫. I have water in my tank I look down the white tube and I see about 6" water

@@GarytheWaterGuy I’ve been in the water treatment industry for over 30 years and have replaced dozens, more than l can count , water boss units. At a price under $400 , you get what you pay for. It’s all about the valve. Culligan, Fleck, and Hellenbrand are top of the line. Water boss has its place. Mobil homes, kitchens and places with limited space.

@@jrm2383 I used a unit from Culligan, it worked for about 3 years, then sprung a leak where the valving goes into the media tank. Resulted in a nasty cleanup & damage. I said screw renting, bought a Waterboss 700...it’s been plugging along trouble free since 2007, around 14 years now.
